This is a sub-page of Proto:Rayman 3 (GameCube).

Gameplay Differences#

  • Different voices and voicelines for Rayman, Globox, Begoniax, Razoff, the Teensies and some of the Hoodlums.
  • Different music, sound effects and particle effects.
  • Gems have been replaced by crowns, like those seen in The Longest Shortcut. These may have just been early designs, however.
  • No scoring system, and Freeze Mode is disabled.
  • Teensies don't have any dialogue when you free them.
  • Matuvus are present in this build, Tribelles. They don't give any points.
  • Rayman's health bar is fully upgraded but there is a limit threshold in "Bad Sauce" and "Highland Drifters".
    • In "Dangerous Game" and "Special Invaders", Rayman is fully healed.
  • The Vortex power-up can spin enemies around but does not shrink them.
  • The Lockjaw power-up does not electrocute enemies.
  • A small debug feature is enabled. Press L2 + R2 + D-pad up to warp to the next section of whatever level you are playing.

Graphical Differences#

  • The copyright info for Ubi Soft Entertainment is missing.

Loading Screen#

  • The loading screen shows a rotating 3D model of a Hoodmonger. On the left, are posters of the game's cast scrolling infinitely and a coin slot with a red button below it. The screen itself cannot be interacted with. This is also present on the other prototypes, and is similar to Rayman Arena.

The main menu uses a level select on the map of The Fairy Council part 1.

Pause Menu#

  • The pause menu consists only of 3 options: "Restart Level", "Back To Main Menu" and "Resume Play". They do exactly what they say.

Prototype

Final

HUD#

  • The colors of Rayman's and boss's health bars are reversed. In addition, the little purple icon next to the boss's health bar is absent.
  • Vastly different look for the power-up timer.

Combo Text#

The text that pops up whenever Rayman scores a number of points during combat, was initially titled "Holy Sheet", possibly as a placeholder. It had a lighter red color and a different font.

Level Differences#

Bad Sauce (The Bog of Murk Part 1)#

  • The restroom at the beginning of the level is closed and is missing a chimney.

Prototype

Final

  • The tree stump connected to the wash line, was originally a little further.

Prototype

Final

  • Different design for the cage the Sylkin is trapped in. This design is used exclusively for the Griskins that appear in the Land of the Livid Dead.

Prototype

Final

  • The restroom located at the back of Begoniax's house originally had a swarm of flies hovering over it.

Prototype

Final

  • The second Teensy cage located at the back of Begoniax's house is absent.

Prototype

Final

Begoniax Boss#

  • Begoniax is faster when she's using her charge attack.

Highland Drifters (The Land of the Livid Dead Part 2)#

  • There are no Hoodmonger Soldiers present in the level.
  • Hoodmongers do not deflect attacks.
  • Piggy banks are replaced by destructible crates.

Prototype

Final

  • When fighting the first couple of enemies, an alarm horn is heard in the background. This isn't the case in the final game.
  • No victory music plays when all enemies are defeated.
  • The Black Lums have a different design in this build with white eyes and no mouth. In addition, the Black Lums stay for a few seconds before flying off-camera, an aspect which only happens after Rayman aquires the grimace ability later on in the final game.

To do:
Post image comparisons

  • Punching Globox doesn't seem to do anything to him.
  • No cutscene triggers when encountering the Grim Keeper, but there is one for Globox when he's drinking from the plum juice barrel. In the final game, the opposite happens.
    • Rayman can move around during the cutscene.
  • The Grim Keeper is surprisingly less aggressive in this build. He spawns about 3-4 little Grims in a row while in the final game he spawns only one but constantly.
    • The room that the Grim Keeper is in looks slightly different.

Prototype

Final

  • The bubbles that Globox leaves behind when he's drunk, have a different look with a deep velvet color and some added transparency. The pattern for the bubbles is also different.

Prototype

Final

  • The Griskins's models are transparent in the prototype, making them look more like actual ghosts.

Prototype

Final

  • The path to the secret room of this level's section is blocked off.

Prototype

Final

  • Different particle effects for Hoodoo's force field. In the same area, the flags in the background have a different design, depicting a Hoodlum's face instead of a black lum.

Dangerous Game (The Bog of Murk Part 4)#

  • While running away, Razoff constantly leaves mines behind him until Rayman enters another room. In the final game, he only leaves mines when he exits the room that fights Rayman in person.
  • The Sylkin that originally gives you a green gem is absent.

Special Invaders (The Tower of the Leptys Part 3)#

  • There is no intro.
  • There are crowns present in the water room that were removed instead of being replaced by gems.
  • The ending features Globox's ship exiting the area instead of dropping off Rayman.

Cinematics#

Inside the prototype's files, there are many videos and placeholders related to the game's cutscenes. A lot of them seem to be based off of events that happened during an early iteration of the game's story that ended up getting reworked.

Placeholders#

Early placeholders for the game's cinematics. The text is in French.

Notes

”Rayman and Globox take to the skies on their way to the Land of Mischievous Spirits. They're flying over the Croak-Croak Swamp, when something unexpected happens...”

Here we have the former French names of the Land of the Livid Dead and the Bog of Murk. Originally, Rayman and Globox would take a bird named the Wooglah to the Land of the Livid Dead, before the Wooglah would get wounded and would send Rayman to the Bog of Murk.

”And so Rayman brought love and peace to the marshes. To thank him, the witch and the hunter promised to take care of the Wooglah, and showed a path to the land.

After three days of walking, our friends finally arrived at the second temple...”

Originally, Begoniax and Razoff would have had a change of heart and let Rayman and Globox be the caretakers of the Wooglah bird.

”After two days of walking, Rayman and Globox arrive at the third temple, lost in the Deadlands...”

Deadlands was the former name of the Desert of the Knaaren.

”Becoming a son of the Leptys, and with his new-found power, Rayman asks Gumsi, the child-king of the Knaaren, for a way out to the third temple. Gumsi grants his request, after making Rayman swear to never forget about his Knaaren brothers. Rayman and Globox finally arrive at the temple.”

  • Unlike the other placeholders, this one features the models of Rayman, Globox and Murphy from Rayman 2.
  • Excluding the text, this image appears in the PC port's configuration menu, for both the regular game and the demo.

”The leader of the black lums convinced Reflux to join forces with him. He assured him that together they would triumph over Rayman. Blinded by his dream of revenge, Reflux stole Gumsi's scepter and took off to the black lums' hideout on the Island Beyond the Clouds. With the sceptre in his possession, Reflux granted the black lums the power of Leptys.

The worst was yet to come...”

The Island Beyond the Clouds is the French name of the Summit Beyond the Clouds.

Early Cutscenes#

Early FMVs for the game. All these cinematics feature Rayman's model from Rayman 2 and there's no audio playing in them. There is an FMV that can be seen in the game by selecting "Trailer", and it's the E3 trailer that is present on the prerelease page.

SWAMP51 (The idyll of Begoniax and Razoff)#

Watch on YouTubeAn alternate cinematic of Razoff's defeat. Humiliated for losing to Rayman, the hunter starts crying and one of his teardrops falls on a nearby Ugly, which turns it into a butterfly-like creature. Begoniax wintesses this from her magic mirror and confirms that the hunter's tears were in fact the elixir of beauty that she was looking for all this time. Begoniax then takes this opportunity to use the tears on herself by landing onto Razoff, who then falls in love with her as a result. The scene ends Rayman waving at the couple from above.

Oddly enough, the room where Razoff's second fight takes place is untextured in this cinematic, indicating that the area was not fully designed yet.

KNAAR60 (Gumsi's grandeur)#

Watch on YouTubeAlternate cinematic of Rayman obtaining the power of Leptys. The cutscene plays mostly the same as in the final release with a few additional scenes, some of which that can be seen in the 2002 E3 trailer. The final shot of Rayman's eyes is present in the final game but you can see it only for a split second.

Watch on YouTubeAn unused version of the FMV where André joins forces with Reflux, though only showing the second part of the cutscene as the first part shows André escaping from Globox as the doctors work together. The cinematic is pretty much identical to the final game, minus the scene in which André talks about his plan to his minions. The text "en chantier" translates to "work in progress".

MOUNT20 (The Hoodlums get organized)#

Watch on YouTubeAn unused cinematic of the Hoodlums' Hideout. The cutscene is identical to the final game with the difference being the lighting and the added smoke effect for the Horrible Machine.

FACT_22 (The power of the Leptys)#

Watch on YouTubeUnused FMV of the Horrible Machine's destruction. The cinematic is identical to the final game with the difference being Rayman's model and some unknown objects places around the machine. There is a second part in the final, including Reflux using the scepter.
