Backup

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Proto:Daikatana (Windows)/v0.10/Skyboxes.

The folder "backup" in the main skybox folder contains many alternate and work in progress skyboxes for Episode 4, all of which are different from the skyboxes used in the final game.

andy#

Andy is a skybox showing a dark bleu sky with a black bottom. Based on the fact that all of the skybox textures in the "backup" folder are for Episode 4, it's likely this is a prototype of the base sky seen in several Episode 4 skyboxes found in "backup".

cloud#

Cloud consists of a single texture showing a set of clouds over a light green sky.

E4M1#

Backup contains a single skybox texture called "e4m1". It seems to be the only remnant of a scrapped Episode 4 skybox style, as it shows a part of the Golden Gate bridge in a style not seen in any other skyboxes in 0.10 nor the final game.

E4M1_#

E4M1_ is a copy of the E4M1 skybox used in the prototype, but with extremely minute details changes.

E4M1 (PCX)#

An alternate take on the PCX version of the E4M1 skybox can be found in "backup". It has much heavier dithering compared to the PCX version used in the prototype.

E4M1 (PSD)#

Two textures from a different take of the E4M1 skybox in PSD format are in "backup". Compared to the used skybox, the camera is much closer to the Golden Gate Bridge, the sky uses a different set of clouds and has patches of light blue in it, and there are far less buildings visible than in the used one.

E4M1sky#

The "Backup" folder contains two textures showing an E4M1 skybox that is all on one texture. The texture appears to be have the land drawn by hand instead of made in a pre-rendered in a 3D modeling program, making it look quite different compared to the other skyboxes in both the prototype and the final game.

The sky is green instead of the blue sky used in the 0.10 E4M1 sky. What appears to be the Tower of Crime (E4M3 in the final game) connected to San Francisco via a tram is visible in this skybox; a detail that does not appear in any other skyboxes. The part of the city that is visible from the rest of the level is quite small compared to other E4M1 skyboxes. The Golden Gate Bridge is red instead of being grey, like it is in both the 0.10 and final E4M1 skyboxes.

Two versions of this skybox exist. The second one, e4m1sky2, is flipped vertically compared to the first one.

Both of the skybox textures are PSD files that were last edited on October 26th, 1997, back when the game was still on the Quake engine.

E4M1t#

E4M1t is a TGA version of the PSD E4M1 skybox, but with an extra "up" texture showing only the sky. The up texture fits the sky seen in the other images.

E4M2#

A completely different skybox texture for E4M2 (E4M3 in the final game) exists in the "backup" folder under the "E4M2" name.

The skybox shows what appears to be a large dock area instead of the view of the San Francisco bay seen in the main E4M2 skybox. It uses a color scheme closer to the E4M1 skybox seen in 0.10's E4M1b, but with a grey sky. No signs of San Francisco or any other landmarks seen in the main skybox can be found in this one.

A BMP texture from this version of the E4M2 skybox can be found in the "backup" folder. It appears to be from an earlier revision, as the landmass the docks are on lack buildings and do not have the tower with the light on it near the back. The fact that it's a BMP while the other textures are TGAs suggest it was saved when the artist accidentally saved the file in BMP format instead of TGA and it was never overwritten with the newer version of the texture seen with this skybox, nor was it removed.

E4M2a#

Another unused skybox for E4M2 exists under the name "E4M2a". Like the prwevious E4M2, this one is completely different from the main E4M2 skybox. Oddly, it is much closer to the final E4M3 skybox in terms of theme than the one in the main skybox folder in 0.10.

The skybox has the camera placed on an island with lots of rocky cliffs and the occasional destroyed skyscraper. The moon can be seen behind a destroyed building in the distance. The sky is a grey color, and the ocean is a dark blue instead of the clear color seen in the main E4M2 skybox. The water appears to be similar to the one seen in Milestone 2's E4M2.

E4M2b#

E4M2b is the last of the E4M2 skyboxes in the prototype, and like the ones before it, it's completely different from the one in the main skybox directory.

The skybox is set in the middle of a large body of water. Buildings can be seen far away at various points, but no landmarks, like the Golden Gate Bridge, can be seen. Most of the skybox is taken up by a dark blue sky with grey clouds on the upper half and a dark blue and pixelated ocean on the lower half.

E4M4#

A skybox for E4M4 can be found in the prototype in the "backup folder", despite it not appearing in the prototype itself.

This skybox is yet another case of a skybox that is completely different from the one used in the final game. The skybox appears to take place near street level in a city, but the camera seems to be embedded in a wall, cutting off some parts of the street in certain textures. A large building can be seen rising above the street with an unusual logo on it and the word "Benetron" underneath the logo.

E4M6#

An earlier version of the E4M6 skybox found in 0.10's main directory can be found in the "backup" folder. This version is TGA and 24-bit, while the one in the main directory is PCX and 8-bit. This version is slightly lighter than the main one and has a more detailed window in the texture showing the dome.

A copy of this skybox can be found under the name "water3".

E4M8_#

A TGA version of the E4M8 skybox can be found with spaces after the file names. It does not have any dithering on it, since it is 24-bit instead of 8-bit, like the used textures are. Besides that, it is the same.

E4M8#

Another TGA version of the E4M8 skybox can be found in the "backup" folder. This one seems to have some slight dithering on it. The "ft" tile is the same as the one in the main skybox folder.

There is also a BMP version of one of the textures. Like with the BMP version of one of the textures in "backup"'s E4M2 set, it seems likely it was created by accident and not removed when this prototype was compiled.

E4M9#

A single skybox texture exists for E4M9, an area completely removed from the final game. This texture is the texture missing from the E4M9 skybox seen in the main skybox folder.

sanfrn#

Sanfrn is the texture e4m1sky parceled out into proper skybox textures.

sftest#

Sftest comes in two forms; TGA and PCX. The TGA version is extremely incomplete, showing textureless buildings, mountains, and the Golden Gate Bridge floating over a black void where the water should be. The sky seems to be similar to the one seen in Andy. The layout of the buildings and landmasses does not match any other Episode 4 skyboxes.

The BMP version is completely different from the TGA version, despite sharing the same name. The buildings and landmasses are arranged differently than in the TGA version, the camera's distance from the mainland is completely different, and everything has proper textures. The mountains use a green texture instead of the rocky grey textures used elsewhere, the Golden Gate Bridge is its proper color, and the water appears to be using the same water seen in Milestone 2's E4M1 and E4M2.

test#

Test consists of a grey sky with a black void underneath it. The same texture is used for the "dn" and "up" chunks of the skybox.

testsky#

Testsky is a skybox showing the sun setting on a blue sky on one half and complete darkness on the other half. It shares the same texture size than the Greensky series in the main folder uses, suggesting a connection between it and them. It was last modified on September 30th, 1997, back when the game was on the Quake engine.

Untitled-1#

A single chunk of E4M8's sky can be seen with the name "Untitled-1". Based on its name, it was likely created by mistake and wasn't removed when the prototype was compiled.

water4#

Water4 is another underwater skybox, but features different locations comapred to the one used for E4M6. The underwater base is very far away from the camera compared to water2 and water3, while a wall using a window texture seen in the final E4M1 and E4M2 can be seen underwater. There is a metal tower seen in no other skybox resources near the wall as well.
