the cutting room mirror

Shrek (Xbox)

Shrek kicks off the Xbox's launch with a 3D platformer. Notably, it was the first ever game to use deferred shading in its graphics. It was later ported to the GameCube as Shrek: Extra Large by a different team, including cutscenes, more voice acting, and a few extra levels.

Featuring a very fast, silent Shrek that pummels enemies that never die, levels and characters not seen in the movie at all (all designed by Todd McFarlane), and a lack of characters from the movie aside from Fiona and the Magic Mirror.

Unused Graphics#

common.lmp#

test.dds#

A test texture pattern.

font.dds#

A sheet of fonts from Quake III Arena.

chicken.dds#

An image of a chicken.

Logos#

Static logos for Dreamworks, TDK and a Shrek-styled DICE logo are present. The game uses FMV sequences instead, rendering these unused.

motherg.lmp#

trans_RH_Alpha_leafs_test03A.dds#

An unused bush texture.

sewers.lmp#

Blueprints#

The sewer level has two layout blueprints for the level itself.

swamp.lmp#

AM_BG.dds#

The top half of a still from the movie, where Shrek tells Donkey that he should "go celebrate his freedom with his own friends", seemingly cropped to focus on the trees. As implied by the BG part of the file name, this was probably used as a placeholder texture for natural-looking level boundaries or a backdrop in the swamp level.

JJ_shrek_house_door.dds#

an unused texture named JJ_shrek_house_door.dds reveals a completely different design stage. Instead of just a door, it contains a full illustration depicting a section of Shrek's house—complete with the wooden walls, a glowing yellow window, and the door itself. Given its explicit filename, this full-scenery texture was originally intended to represent the door area (or possibly a flat backdrop version of it) before developers ultimately replaced its role with the simpler BS_door.dds asset, leaving the illustrated version completely unused.

map.lmp#

worldelements.dds#

A texture with basic gradients and a strange brown pattern.

comp_AM_DICE.dds#

A mirror texture (for the Magic Mirror?) with DICE's logo and a copyright date on it.

dragonfest.lmp#

flag.dds#

The texture file, contains the patterns used for the medieval banners and flags throughout the stage, features an unexpected addition. On the far-left black stripe of the texture sheet, two crude, glowing yellow smiley faces are clearly visible. Because of how the texture mapping is applied to the flag models in-game, only the heraldic symbols—such as the sun, the castle tower, and the checkered patterns—are utilized. The black section containing these handwritten doodles is completely cut off, making them entirely invisible during normal gameplay.

Unused Models#

fiona.mgx#

To do:
Either find a way to view the model or load it in-game.

In eviltower.lmp are textures and a model of Princess Fiona. She does not appear in-game, though a render with her in it appears before the credits. The model was eventually used in the GameCube port during the final boss sequence.

She also has an extensive list of animations implying that she was going to be playable possibly for a scrapped two-player mode.

shrek_house1.wav

You can use the power of the magic mirror to teleport around the world and complete your quest.

shrek_house2.wav

Uhhh... yeah. The mirror is very weak right now. To increase its power and teleport farther, you'll need to perform good deeds. Every time you perform a good deed, the mirror will become a little more powerful. If you work at it, it will eventually be powerful enough to take you to Merlin's tower of pure evil.

shrek_house3.wav

Jump into the magic mirror and get going.

While used, the game cuts to credits before he can say "Ooohh, Didn't see that coming." This line was heard in full... twice in Extra Large.

Out Of Bounds Dungeon#

If the player manages to fall out of the level's geometry and fall out of bounds(This can only be legitimately possible in the Mother Goose Land stage in both versions), Shrek will freefall for about 7 seconds before a loading screen appears and sends you to this dungeon with 5 yellow orbs attached to springs and chickens otherwise not seen in the game. There is no way out; the pause button and cheats are disabled, forcing the player to reset the game to continue. Interestingly, this dungeon was replaced with the inside of a GameCube in the Extra Large port, implying that Shrek went so far out of bounds that he's now trapped inside your game console.
