A post was added to Mojang Studios' blog on April 1st 2014.
"The long-nosed villagers introduced in Minecraft beta 1.9 have become sentient. They have taken over our skin servers and content delivery networks (CDN), so unfortunately you will not be able to change your skins until we fix the problem. We are desperately trying our best to pull the plugs, but we should prepare ourselves to serve under our new villager overlords. Singularity may be upon us." — The Minecraft Team
2014 April Fools#
On April 1, 2014, Mojang pulled a memorable prank by automatically swapping every player's skin with a random villager variant. This forced change even included the green-robed "nitwit" skin, which hadn't actually been introduced to the vanilla game yet. Players were locked into these appearances unless they manually tweaked the launcher's .json file.
Changes#
- Villager behaviors stayed the same, but their sound effects were swapped with Element Animation's comedic "T.E.A.V.S.R.P" pack.
- The main menu featured a Game of Thrones parody theme, celebrating the show's upcoming season premiere and referencing the original sound pack trailer.
- Developer Jeb jokingly tweeted that a villager had taken over his account.
Behind the Scenes & Resolution#
The groundwork for the prank was laid when developer Grumm leaked seven distinct villager skin templates (including the base model) on Reddit.
By April 2, 2014, Element Animation dropped both an updated standalone version of the sound pack (featuring the new music) and a follow-up video about the event. Shortly after, Mojang rolled back the update, restoring all player skins and audio files to normal.
