This is a sub-page of Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Context#
The text data of this game works like this:
The cutscene data is stored in 2 different files. One is a FlowData, and it stores thing like animations, Yes/No prompts, and most importantly for this page the character speaking. Each FlowData has multiple text files, one per language.
The relevant information is:
- Since the speaker is stored as their ID, deleted or swapped characters will not appear properly on the dialogue.
- If 2 different text files are stored with the same FlowData, we won't know the character IDs for one of those texts.
- The developers overwrote on top of old text files. This means that if the text was longer, not all was overwritten and the old draft still remains. For example, a cutscene that on the first draft was 10 lines, then was overwritten to be 7, then finally finished as 5 lines, the file will have the lines 6-7 from the second draft and 8-10 from the first draft. We have to do guesswork to know how many drafts there were on a file that has unused lines like this.
- The developers wrote on the TextFile descriptions of what the FlowData does. Those lines go "unused" but 90% of it describes what is shown and is not really relevant.

Isle of awakening Prologue#
Lulu's Tasks#
This next line explains Lulu's second task. The first line in the final game is conveyed by Malroth in an earlier cutscene, and the second line is conveyed once you get the first Scallywinkle.

シドー「まずは 火を 用意しないとな。 |
If only we had something to cook them on... Hey, maybe that trusty old book of yours will tell you how to start a fire! |
This cutscene, alongide other unused ones, follow the pattern of describing the Builderpedia as the source for the builder's recipes. The final game instead opts to describe the Builder "inventing" instead of "consulting". For example, in the equivalent Cutscene 659:

This next line explains Lulu's third task. It mentions having to "find" a Workbench, while in the final release it is right next to the room you build as the first task.
Something to note is that this line is explaining how to use a workbench to make Staw Beds. In the final release, to reach this task you must have already used the workbench to build the Bonfire mentioned previously.
A reason for this can be seen in a prerelease image of the tasks, where either tasks could be completed out of order, or task 3 was the first task to be completed.

シドー「それじゃあ まずは |
In that case, the first thing we need to do is find you one. I wonder if there's one washed up on this beach somewhere... |
These next few lines show Malroth conveying gameplay tutorials to the Builder. The japanese side has Malroth comment on the book. In the final release this scene is moved to the Mountaintop sequence.

There is also another version that is stored at the end that seems to be an earlier version. This one only has a japanese variant.
As evident by the self decleration, a sequence of test dialogue. The main thing of note is Malroth's characterization is a bit different here, being a bit more overtly "evil overlord" flavored than he usually is.
Malroth adresses himself as "Malroth-sama" in this dialogue. It's similar wording to how other monsters or Hargon adress the Master of Destruction.

This seems to be dialogue from before the Hairy Hermit character was implemented, as the Hermit is the one to give the player a hammer in the final game. Also of note, in the final game "the voice" is the alias of Hargon, which has... interesting implications.

The voice has ID 249. In the final game this corresponds to "Unused249". One line is set to Rosie, but it seems to be a mistake. 249 was probably deleted mid-development.
The voice's speech style does not match the Hairy Hermit's speech style at all, so it is unlikely that this is simply a version of events where the Hermit does not immediately reveal himself.
The first two lines from The Voice are also repeated for some unknown reason.

"Minimedal" Tutorial#
Something something, the building blueprint tutorial was in the beach instead of the temple, and it was also a minimedal tutorial, and tablet target tutorial.
This segment seems to be related to some structures seen in April 2018. This tutorial was cut, and teaching the player about room sizes was moved to Furrowfield.
An early screenshot shows that the "Builder's Beacon" is likely an earlier variant of the Mini-Medal statues. They do not have text hints in the final game.

Misc NPC dialogue#
Postgame#
This line is one of the 6 lines Hellen has in postgame. It goes unused (she is left with only 5) and is stored untranslated in all languages.
Hellen here refers to her "native island". This is Furrowfield, not Malhalla, as stated in the plot and in the resident registry. This could have been a hint to the cutscene that triggers if you send both Hellen and Rosie to Furrowfield. There is no hint in the final release postgame that would make the player check Hellen's native homeland.
This also features the Hellen quirk that is translated as "...I jest!" in english. Both Pastor Al and her do it.

Misc strings#
Every character has a set of strings associated with them, that determine what they say on the little beige 'pop-up' texts. This is mostly used to assign different 'personalities' to the generated NPCs on the explorer's shore.
Interestingly enough, although Malroth has his own 'special' string set, it contains text for actions he cannot take in-game. By assigning Malroth's string ID to a normal NPC you can see some of these pop-ups:

Toilet time, no toilet available |
Toilet time, after toilet |
Eating time, no food available |

Note: If an NPC is given the 'enigma' job, they will complain about not being able to eat or go to the toilet, even if they are available.
Other characters may have unused dialogue like this too.
