This page details one or more prototype versions of The Lion King (Genesis).

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

A late prototype of the Genesis The Lion King was released by Armageddon Potato on January 1, 2025. While it postdates all of the Super Nintendo prototypes, it still manages to show some differences to the final.

General Differences#

  • The title screen is almost identical to the final game, but the copyright information is missing the two periods and comma.
  • The level select code uses a different combination from the final game; Up, Down, Right, Left, A, B, C, Start.

Level Differences#

Simba's Exile#

  • Just like with prototypes of the SNES game, Ed makes a laugh whenever he is about to drop a rock, which was removed in the final game.

Return to Pride Rock#

  • Uses "Be Prepared" as background music. "Circle Remix" is present in the sound test, but uses a different mix compared to the final.
  • After defeating Scar, the background and palette stays the same, though the rainfall does appear. As a result, the fade out happens much sooner.
  • In the ending cutscene, Mufasa does not say "Everything the light touches is our kingdom", and the logo does not display.
