This article has a talk page!

This is a sub-page of Proto:Portal 2.

SOMETIMES I SEE A TEXT BOX AND I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSSDFGFFDHFGDJGGFSHGDFH

This page sucks.
If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome.
Specifically: Very few comparisons, low resolution/few images, and pretty basic overall. And its not clear if this page is talking about a single build for a single platform or not.

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Work out if this was actually playable at the time without hacks.

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

To do:
Needs more information and comparisons, also document leaked licensee build dated 2014.

Before Portal 2's official release, most players could preload and play the game on their platforms. The build files originated from the game preload DVD. This build is nearly identical to the final build, with only a few known differences. This build is dated March 9th, 2011, 40 days before the game was released.

Differences#

General#

Boot-Up Screen#

The most obvious difference is the absence of the game's logo. A loading text also appears in this build which is removed in the final game besides the Nintendo Switch port.

To do:

  • Try to get screenshots with matching backgrounds (ideally the Chapter 1 BG).

Preload

Final (Initial release)

  • The "Extras" and "Robot Enrichment Store" buttons on the main menu are missing.

Gameplay#

  • A pre-release disclaimer watermark exists during gameplay that says PRERELEASE BUILD DO NOT DISTRIBUTE.
  • The Underground Paint Dropper model was high poly.
  • Game save indicator appears when game is being autosaved, which would be scrapped later in final release on PC (but not consoles).
