This is a sub-page of Proto:Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Many unused enemies can be found in this prototype. A fair amount have battle data, but most do not have any attack patterns.

To change the battle ID of the tutorial Bowser fight at the start of the game, change 0x81E3BF4 to any of the IDs listed below. You can also change 0x81E3C14 to change the battle ID of the Fawful encounter, to test enemies with both Bros. playable instead of just Mario.

Final Enemies#

ID: 04 Sgt. Starshade#

Animation ID: 307D
Palette ID: 301C
The unused enemy from the final game. Just as unused here as he is there, and crashes the game if attacked.

ID: 18 Mossy Goomba#

Animation ID: 4001
Palette ID: 4001
Same as the unused one in the final game.

ID: 19 Pop Goomba#

Animation ID: 4002
Palette ID: 4002
Same as the unused one in the final game.

ID: 1A Paragoomba#

Animation ID: 4003

ID: 30 Lakipea#

Animation ID: 4028
Palette ID: 401B
OW Animation ID: 3199
OW Palette ID: 30E6
Stays much closer to the ground than in the final. Doesn't seem to have the attack that actually spawns a Sharpea in battle. Overworld sprites are slightly different.

MLSS_Proto_Lakipea_OW_FloatS.gif MLSS_Proto_Lakipea_OW_FloatN.gif MLSS_Proto_Lakipea_OW_FloatE.gif

ID: 35 Hammer Bro.#

Animation ID: 403D
Palette ID: 402B
Identical to the final, minus the attack where it jumps and throws a hammer.

ID: 37 Queen Bean#

Animation ID: 4031
Palette ID: 4023
MLSS_Proto_EnemyQueenBean.png
Uses an earlier design, with a slightly different-looking crown. Doesn't have the gimmick where she slowly inches closer to you each turn, and thus doesn't have the arm slam attacks. Arms are invincible, and her head isn't considered a spiky enemy yet. Graphics for her shriveled-up arms exist, but aren't used as the arms can't be defeated. The graphics for them are identical to the final.

ID: 3A Rookie#

Animation ID: 403A
Palette ID: 4029
Doesn't attack.

ID: 3B Popple#

Animation ID: 4039
Palette ID: 4028
Doesn't attack.

ID: 3C Laser Snifit#

Animation ID: 4040
Palette ID: 402D
OW Animation ID: 319A
OW Palette ID: 30E7
MLSS_Proto_LaserSnifit.png
Uses an earlier design, with strange blue eyes and a different laser shooter. Ring attack is less polished than the final and is unavoidable. All of its overworld graphics are present, including it attacking by shooting its ring attack. The ring graphics are identical to the final.

ID: 42 Paratroopea#

Animation ID: 4068
Palette ID: 4048
MLSS_Proto_ParatroopeaPH.png

ID: 44 "Elite Chuck Guy"#

Animation ID: 4069
Palette ID: 4049
Proto_Elite_Chuck_Guy.png
Seems to be an early version of the light blue variant from Guffawha Ruins. Uses a non-animated placeholder sprite. Doesn't attack.

ID: 47 Mecha-Chomp#

Animation ID: 406E
Palette ID: 404E
MLSS_Proto_MechaChompPH.png
Doesn't attack. Uses a non-animated placeholder sprite.

ID: 48 Glurp#

Animation ID: 406F
Palette ID: 404F
OW Animation ID: 31A4
OW Palette ID: 30F1
Positioning suggests it might've been originally created for Woohoo Hooniversity. Lacks the poison gas cloud attack, but the graphics for it are in the ROM. Animation ID for the cloud is 4070 and Palette ID is 4050. Bite attack seems to never hit. Lacks a damaged sprite.

ID: 49 Eeker#

Animation ID: 4071
Palette ID: 4051
MLSS_Proto_EekerPH.png
Doesn't attack. Uses a non-animated placeholder sprite.

ID: 4A Blue Virus#

Animation ID: 4072
Palette ID: 4052
OW Animation ID: 319F
OW Palette ID: 30EC
MLSS_Proto_Battle_Blue_Virus.png
Uses an earlier design, being off-model and much larger, and a non-animated placeholder sprite. Doesn't attack.

ID: 4C Yo Bro#

Animation ID: 4076
Palette ID: 4056

ID: 4D Gunner Guy#

Animation ID: 4077
Palette ID: 4057
MLSS_Proto_GunnerGuy.png
Uses an earlier design, which lacks pupils and some detail on its cannon. Doesn't attack.

ID: 4E Mecha Blooper#

Animation ID: 4043
Palette ID: 402F
MLSS_Proto_MechaBlooper.png
Uses an earlier design, with plating on its head and different-looking oxygen pipes. Doesn't attack.

ID: 50 Magikoopa#

Animation ID: 4052
Palette ID: 4036
Fire ring is impossible to dodge. Lacks a "hurt" sprite when taking damage. Attack angle is slightly different.

ID: 51 Sniper Bill#

Animation ID: 4055
Palette ID: 4037
MLSS_Proto_SniperBill.png
Uses an earlier design, with thick eyebrows and squinty eyes seemingly parodying the title character of the Golgo 13 manga. When attacking, it waits for player input: A = attacks Mario, B = attacks Luigi. The little Bill has a messed-up palette.

ID: 52 Goomdiver#

Animation ID: 404E
Palette ID: 4034
OW Animation ID: 31A1
OW Palette ID: 30EE
Doesn't attack. Floats up if attacked. Has overworld sprites for moving in all directions, suggesting that it was originally meant to roam the seabed areas instead of trying to drop onto the player from above. These sprites were deleted before the final game.

MLSS_Proto_Goomdiver_OW_WalkN.gif MLSS_Proto_Goomdiver_OW_WalkE.gif

ID: 53 Goomdiver 2#

Animation ID: 404F
Palette ID: 4034
Duplicate of the previous, but doesn't float up when attacked.

ID: 54 Puffer Cheep#

Animation ID: 4050
Palette ID: 4035
OW Animation ID: 31A2
OW Palette ID: 30EF

ID: 55 Blooper#

Animation ID: 404B
Palette ID: 4031
OW Animation ID: 31A0
OW Palette ID: 30ED
Doesn't attack.

ID: 56 Gritty Goomba#

Animation ID: 404A
Palette ID: 4030
OW Animation ID: 31A3
OW Palette ID: 30F0
MLSS_Proto_GrittyGoomba.png
Uses an earlier design that has lighter-colored shoes. Doesn't attack.

ID: 57 Spiky Snifit#

Animation ID: 404A
Palette ID: 404C
MLSS_-_Spiky_Snifit_(Proto).png
Uses an earlier design, with the strap for its mask wrapped around its head differently. Uses a different attack pattern where it winks, and whichever eye it closes is the Bro. it's targeting. Only seems to shoot out mushrooms. Demo version of the enemy can shoot out spike balls, however.

ID: 58 Boomerang Bro.#

Uses a Goomba sprite as placeholder. Most likely does not attack.

An unused boomerang is present in this build at Animation ID: 4008, Palette ID: 4007, which is fairly early on in the enemy graphics list but could be related to this enemy. If so, the design changed completely in the final. The final's is longer, brown, and faces the opposite direction.

Proto

Final

The rest of the enemies shown below here in this section have graphics/animation data in the ROM, but no battle ID.

Teehee Valley Dry Bones#

Animation ID: 4013
Palette ID: 400D
MLSS_Proto_TeeheeDryBones.png
The design of Dry Bones seen in Teehee Valley in the final game is already present, but not used and uses the same palette as the Hoohoo Mountain variation.

Chuckolator#

Animation ID: 403F
Palette ID: 402C
MLSS_Proto_ChuckolatorPH.png
Only has a non-animated placeholder sprite at this point.

Koopalings#

Animation ID: 405A, Palette ID: 403A
Animation ID: 405F, Palette ID: 403F
Animation ID: 405B, Palette ID: 403B
Animation ID: 4060, Palette ID: 4040
Animation ID: 405E, Palette ID: 403E
Animation ID: 405D, Palette ID: 403D

MLSS_Proto_Iggy.pngMLSS_Proto_Morton.pngPrototype_MLSS_Lemmy.png
MLSS_Proto_Ludwig.pngMLSS_Proto_Roy.pngMLSS_Proto_Wendy.pngMLSS_ProtoLarry.png
All of the Koopalings are already present, but only have placeholder sprites. Lemmy has his signature ball, Wendy is in a slightly different pose, and Larry doesn't look angry. Morton, Roy, and Ludwig have already begun to have their sprites prepared for animation, as their head graphics are separate from their bodies.

Red and Yellow Viruses#

Animation ID: 4073, Palette ID: 4053
Animation ID: 4074, Palette ID: 4054
OW Animation ID: 319D, OW Palette ID: 30EA
OW Animation ID: 319E, OW Palette ID: 30EB
MLSS_Proto_Battle_Red_Virus.pngMLSS_Proto_Battle_Yellow_Virus.png
The Blue Virus is the only variation with a battle ID in this build, but the Red and Yellow ones exist as well. Their early designs match the off-model, goofy one the Blue Virus has.

Starkiss#

Animation ID: 407F
Palette ID: 405F
MLSS_Proto_StarkissPH.png
Only has a static placeholder sprite.

Scrapped Enemies#

Enemies exclusive to this build.

ID: 3D#

Animation ID: 4063
Palette ID: 4043
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Peapod_Goomba.png
"Sayabo" (Pod Guy), a peapod version of three Goombas connected together. Doesn't attack.

ID: 41#

Animation ID: 4067
Palette ID: 4047
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Jinx.png
Jinx from Super Mario RPG?! A surprise cameo, to be sure. Doesn't attack.

ID: 4B#

Animation ID: 4075
Palette ID: 4055
OW Animation ID: 319B
OW Palette ID: 30E8
M&L_SS_Proto_DonFly.png
"Don Fly", an enemy seemingly based on the Fighter Fly. Doesn't attack. Has overworld sprites in this build and leftover in the final game. Found among the Woohoo Hooniversity enemies, so it would've likely shown up there.

Mlss-Fly-walkdown.gif Mlss-Fly-walkup.gif Mlss-Fly-walkside.gif

ID: 4F#

Animation ID: 4078
Palette ID: 4058
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Shell_Enemy.png
"Purukogi", a bizarre enemy covered in shells found among the seabed enemies. Doesn't attack. Considering its design incorporates Bowser-esque elements, its name probably derives from the Korean dish bulgogi, in relation to the story of how the name Koopa (for Bowser) was based on a different Korean dish, gukbap.

The rest of the enemies shown below here in this section have graphics/animation data in the ROM, but no battle IDs.

Golden Goomba#

Animation ID: 407C
Palette ID: 405C
MLSS_Proto_GoldenGoomba.png
A golden Goomba which flashes like the Gold Beanie.

Beanified Hammer Bro.#

Animation ID: 4058
Palette ID: 4039
Prototype_MLSS_Hammer_Bro.png
A beanified Hammer Bro. with spikes on its shell and a sprout on its head. Has all the same animations the normal Hammer Bro. has. This design actually still exists in the final game within the graphics bank of the normal Hammer Bro., but its palette is not present.

Two-Headed Chain Chomp Dog#

Animation ID: 4079
Palette ID: 4059
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Chain_Chomp.png
A two-headed Chain Chomp with the body of a regular dog.

Chain Chomp#

Animation ID: 407A
Palette ID: 405A
Prototype_MLSS_Early_Chain_Chomp_Sprite.png
A plain vanilla Chain Chomp. Might have been replaced by the Mecha Chomp or Chomp Bro. enemies in the final. Chain Chomps would appear as enemies in later Mario & Luigi games.

Potted Piranha Plant#

Animation ID: 4062
Palette ID: 4042
Prototype_MLSS_Early_Piranha_Plant_Sprite.png
A potted Piranha Plant. The final's variant already exists in this build, so it's likely that this was something different.

Sidestepper#

Animation ID: 402E
Palette ID: 4020
M&L_SS_UnusedSidestepperSprite.png
Sidesteppers were originally going to be fought, it seems, as evidenced by this unused "damaged" sprite in this build that's also left over in the final game. In this proto, they have no battle data, but are grouped animation-wise alongside the Super Fly and other sewer enemies.

Freezie#

Animation ID: 402F
Palette ID: 4021
M&L_SS_Proto_Freezie.gif
A Freezie! Seems the whole Mario Bros. gang was going to show up as enemies in this game originally. Its animation is grouped next to the other sewer enemies.

Stubby Shy Guy#

Animation ID: 407B
Palette ID: 405B
M&L_SS_Proto_StubbyGuy.png
A bizarre-looking Shy Guy with stubby legs.

Dark Diskun#

Animation ID: 4066
Palette ID: 4046
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Diskun_Enemy.png
A creature that resembles the Famicom Disk System mascot Diskun, but colored black and with angry eyebrows.

Reverse Lakitu#

Animation ID: 4065
Palette ID: 4045
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Reverse_Lakitu.png
A reverse Lakitu, with the cloud riding the turtle (and holding a whip!).

Footprint Fish#

Animation ID: 407E
Palette ID: 405E
Prototype_MLSS_Unused_Flounder_Enemy.png
A flounder with a boot print on its side.
