This page details one or more prototype versions of Duke Nukem Forever.

Duke Nukem Forever's 15 years of development led to many iterations in different engines starting off with id Tech 2 (first with the Quake branch of the engine then into the Quake II branch) and later into Unreal Engine (which the final game runs on a heavily modified version of with some features of Unreal Engine 2). Some of these builds have found their way to the public in recent years.

Please note that, unless otherwise specified, these pages cover multiple prototypes/builds.

April 2011 Demo Prototype#

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

To do:

  • Add the videos here.
  • There possibly could more here, considering the game's history.

A prototype of the Xbox 360 version of the demo, dated April 9th, 2011, exists. Allegedly the build originated from Microsoft's PartnerNet service. This prototype was released by ObsecureGamers. Much of the same general differences as the demo exist here but a few oddities of its own are present.

  • The prototype suffers from worse performance then the final demo and game.
  • The April 2011 prototype's Sounds.dat is larger (123,237 KB) than the final 360 build's (117,172 KB). Despite the size, it doesn't appear to contain any extra sounds.
  • Some of the videos are different:
    • Dice_intro.bik is very different, featuring only one Holson Twin, different animations and sounds along with different sequence with the logos on the dice. Nvidia is shown as a part of the companies on the dice which was removed from the final video. Duke's "I'm back, baby!" line is also absent.
    • OpenCredits.bik uses an earlier version of Grabbag.
    • Attract.bik is absent.
    • Demo_trailer.bik is 6 seconds longer with the scene of the game pulling away to Duke with the TV.
    • upsellScreen.bik uses a different design of Duke sitting on a throne with the Holsom Twins grabbing his legs. Strangely the non-English versions are the final videos.
  • The Alien Anus Doors with Fangs seen in The Hive levels have three Level-of-detail models that were cut from the final.
