Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories

Unused Per-Field Mechanics#

Each field type has a dedicated block of data in the ROM for storing things such as fusions and AI routines. This means that per-field fusions and AI behavior are possible, but this functionality is unused.

Debug Menu#

To do:
Codes for the other versions.

YuGiOhFM-DebugMenu.png

A hidden debug menu is located on the main menu, below "Save". With a US copy of the game, it can be accessed by pressing ✖ with the GameShark code 80184594 000B activated on the main menu (deactivate it once you're in the debug menu). On real hardware, especially when using the disc-based version of the GameShark, you can include the code D009B390 0080 before 80184594 000B so that the GameShark code is only activated when pressing the Square button, allowing you to navigate the debug menu normally afterwards.

Pressing Select displays a second page with a "2P" option and many blank entries; with one exception, these either return you to the first page, or are copies of the first menu.

3D#

Starts a 3D battle between two Blue-Eyes White Dragons with the title screen music, or replays the last 3D battle you saw since you've powered-up the console. Then it returns to the debug menu.

Campaign#

YuGiOhFM-DebugCampaign.png

Lets you play any cutscene from the game, allowing you to play the game from that point, like a level select menu (though in most cases if the cutscene selected doesn't lead into a duel, it will simply repeat upon completion rather than moving on to the next scene like normal). The cursor and current ID aren't displayed on-screen. You start at ID 0x500; press Up and Down to change the ID, press Left and Right to switch to another digit, and press ✖ to play the selected cutscene. IDs 0x400 to 0x4FF are copies of IDs 0x500 to 0x5FF.

Duel#

Starts a Free Duel against Simon Muran, then returns to the debug menu.

Detail#

Displays your card collection. Pressing ⚪ sends you back to the debug menu.

Sound#

A sound test. The cursor and current ID aren't displayed on-screen. The cursor starts on sound effects; press Right to select the sound tracks, then Right once again to select the sound bank. Press Up and Down to change the sound ID or bank ID. Finally, press ✖ to listen to the sound effect or sound track you've selected.

BustUp#

To do:
Research what it does.

Modifies a bunch of values after 0x800928A0, 0x800E9E66 and 0x801FFD28.

3D MAP#

Displays the 3D map. You may access some locations you shouldn't be able to reach at that point of the story if you didn't beat the World Tournament in your save file.

DeckEdit#

Displays the deck edit screen. Pressing ⚪ sends you back to the debug menu.

FreeDUEL#

Display the Free Duel menu. You can battle the opponents you've unlocked, but pressing ⚪ returns to the title screen, rather than the debug screen. Re-accessing the debug menu without loading your save file will keep the cards you've won.

TITLE#

To do:
Research why it freezes.

Freezes the game.

NAME#

Displays the name entry screen. You can change your name in your save file that way.

Password#

Displays the password screen.

MOVIE#

Plays the intro movie.

Load#

To do:
Research why it freezes.

Freezes the game.

Save#

To do:

Trade#

Starts a trade between the two Memory Cards. Works as intended.

Option#

Displays the option screen. Pressing ⚪ sends you back to the debug menu.

LOSE#

Displays the Game Over Screen, then returns to the debug menu.

HIRATA's#

To do:
Research what it used to do.

Screen fades out, then the game freezes trying to display another screen. This option is most likely named after Hidehiro Hirata, who is listed in the game's credits as "Thought Logic Design".

Exit#

Quits the debug menu.

2P#

YuGiOhFM-DebugMenu2.png

Starts a battle between the two Memory Cards. Works as intended.

AI Duel#

Unnamed option (1st column 3rd row)

If no Campaign duel was played before: starts an AI-controlled Duel, using Simon Muran's deck for both duelists, and the title screen music plays throughout.

Since the AI always goes second in this game, it never has to check whether or not it is the first turn of the duel. As a result, the AI can make a direct attack on the first turn in this mode. You don't get any reward regardless of which AI wins (it displays 000 as a card drop, but the game doesn't even attempt to add it to your card pool).

If a campaign duel was played before: redo the last duel played, continuing the story from there.

Unused Images#

In the image data for character portraits, there exist some placeholder images, labelled as being "not registered".

Regional Differences#

The Japanese version has PocketStation support, which was used in various ways:

  • Cards could be obtained by entering their password via the PocketStation's infrared port, which was mainly used to transfer cards from the Game Boy Yu-Gi-Oh! games via the Game Boy Color's infrared adapter.
  • The PocketStation could be used to fuse cards, with some cards only being obtainable this way.
  • The PocketStation was also used for a lottery. During the game's lifespan, passwords were published in the V Jump magazine (which serialized the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga at the time), which could be entered in the PocketStation at any point after completing Campaign Mode and had a certain probability (depending on the device ID) of awarding a certain card. Note that only 30 such passwords are known to have been published, but 51 more passwords are also accepted by the PocketStation.

The international versions removed PocketStation support. This rendered 32 cards unobtainable during regular gameplay. Thirty of those cards can still appear on opponents' decks and can technically be acquired by paying 999,999 Star Chips (a feat that requires several years of playing in real time). Two cards are unobtainable via any means.
