Sonic Unleashed Leftovers

This is a sub-page of Sonic Generations (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows).

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Specifically: Add more animations and images.

Sonic Generations was built directly atop the Sonic Unleashed codebase, so there's, naturally, a fair amount of leftovers within the game's files. Either there went unused in favor of the achievements or could have been meant for restoring the rest of each .

Sonic Unleashed Debugger Images#

Images from the Sonic Unleashed debugger remain in the game.

All these debug images were in a folder named "reddog". An early screenshot of Sonic Unleashed showed the debugger in action.

Unused Audio#

Modern Sonic#

Found in the Japanese voice files are two voice clips of Modern Sonic leftover for when starting a stage in Sonic Unleashed. These do not play in-game as they are muted in-game entirely.

There are a total of eleven

Foot Sweep Kick#

Watch on YouTubeThe Foot Sweep Kick move from Sonic Unleashed is still in the game, but unused. It can be re-enabled by replacing 74 55 to 08 56 at offset 9FECD6, then pressing the B button in-game.

Freezing#

There is an animation of where Modern Sonic gets frozen by enemies, such as the Egg Blizzards from the said game.

Reaction Plates#

Animations for when Modern Sonic would use reaction plates from Sonic Unleashed can still be found in the game's files, in up, left and right formats. In the game's files for that game, the animations can be found under "sonic_reactionplate".

Sonic Unleashed Install Leftovers#

Unused Images#

Inside bb2.cpk, there is a folder labeled Install that contains images that would've been used during an install process. These are also present in the PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed.

Unused Text#

Some of the text from the game can also be found in the "SaveInstall_Cnv.fco"

  • Succeed: Game data was created successfully
  • Failed: Failed to create game data
  • FailedHDD: Please delete game data via the System Software screen, then try again.
  • Start: This will install game data onto the hard disk drive. Installing game data helps to ensure a pleasant game experience. Would you like to install game data?
  • Cancel: Cancel the installation process?
  • CancelDecide: Installation canceled. Please quit the game and delete partially-installed game data.
  • CancelDecide2: The installation process was cancelled.
  • Delete: Any partially installed game data was deleted.
  • Continue: Partially installed game data exists. Would you like to continue installation?

Images from SystemCommon.ar.00#

disk/bb/SystemCommon.ar.00 contain several images for debug mode/level editor things, plus the infamous Werehog icon.

Hint Images#

An unused folder titled "Hint" can be found, and opening it contains 39 images of hints that were used in load screens for Sonic Unleashed.

Items#

To do:
Add the other 139 items

There's also another folder named "Item", which is a list of every item that could be grabbed in the entire game (shops, shoes, gifts, ect.). Opening the folder contains all 146 items that were both used and unused from the original game.

Leftover Unleashed Renderer and Shader Tables#

To do:
More detail about this renderer and compare it to the one used in Generations. Some info here and here.

While there are new Shader Tables and a new optimized renderer, it looks like Sega forgot to take the old ones out. Oops.

See the notes page for info on how to set these leftovers to appear in the game.

One thing you can notice right off the bat is that the Unleashed renderer uses more intense motion blur. This is not so on the one that is used in-game. Additionally, the Unleashed version displays angular shadows (objects cast their shadows at an angle depending on the light source), which is not the case in Generations.

Letterbox Mode#

A leftover Boolean from Sonic Unleashed for whether or not the game is displayed in a widescreen aspect ratio. This can be set to letterboxed by hex editing A79DA5 to 00, although the HUD will improperly scale.

Button Prompts#

Strangely, in an unpacked bb3.cpk under Application.ar.00, is an image of button prompts of an Xbox 360 controller from Sonic Unleashed. The only difference from it though is the absence of the save icon.

Unused Cube and Environment Maps#

Some levels of the game have cubes and/or environment that are used for the background of the game's scenery (sometimes even for reflections on cars and windows). These images contain levels from Sonic Unleashed that were possibly used from that game.

Chemical Plant#

The stage has an environment map of Eggmanland, which could make sense given the clouds are similar to the Tornado Defense 2's sky background. However, there is no sighting of Eggmanland anywhere in the stage suggesting this was used as a placeholder. The file can be found under "cpz_uni_tn1_cubemap"

Speed Highway#

Four cube maps of Skyscraper Scamper are present in the game's files, these being "nyc_cube_building01_env", "nyc_cube_building01w_env", "sph_cube_building01w_env", and "sph_metal_km1_gold01_cube". Both "nyc_cube_building01w_env" and "sph_cube_building01w_env" are duplicate images of each other.

Mission UI#

disk/bb/ActionCommon.ar.00 contains the Mission UI from Unleashed (ui_missionscreen.xncp), however, most of the textures are missing. Copying them directly from Unleashed makes it possible to view.

Start UI#

This page or section needs more videos.
There's a whole lotta words or pictures here, but not enough videos. Please fix this.
Specifically: Get a video on this one

disk/bb/ActionCommon.ar.00 contains four title graphics, with "Ready? Go!", "Mission Cleared", "Failed" and "Game Over" being present in the file, that was used Sonic Unleashed can be found in the console version of the game (ui_start.yncp). Though they seem to work as intended, their text graphics are missing from the game's files.

Others#

  • Also included are logos from Sonic Unleashed/Sonic World Adventure, all of the Hints (picture wise), and every single inventory item/collectible.
  • There are also leftovers of Sonic Unleashed's textures in the game's files.
