NHL '97 is the penultimate title in EA Sports' annual SNES hockey releases (and the last to be published internationally), functioning essentially as a roster update to last year's game.
Unused Multitap Functionality#
Despite the older NHL '94 including the ability for up to five players to play using the Multitap, NHL '97 does not allow for more than two controllers by default. However, all code related to the peripheral and extended multiplayer remains in the game, seemingly working without a hitch. The Multitap is specifically detected by the game, but the code to enable the additional controllers was dummied out; this can be fixed by the following game enhancer codes:

Interestingly, the previous two games NHL '95 and NHL '96 both include similar cases of Multitap support being available in the code, but disabled in the final game.
