Unused Dialog Box#
Inside Game.exe this window/dialog can be found. A password can be entered on it.
Unused Setup Language List#
The game has single language regional builds, but setup.exe shows this was going to be different as it has an unused language drop down list. The options given here are for English, German, and Czech. Every region except Polish still contains the text files for English, German, and Czech inside aa.dta (except Russian, which lacks the Czech one). The Czech text file is empty and the patch for that language wasn't released until a bit later in September 18, 2002.
Unused Scripts#

This page or section needs more images. |
Racing Mode#
|
|
To do: |
The game's console ports have an exclusive Racing mode to compensate for the lack of Free Ride Extreme there, but said Racing mode is actually present in this platform but dummied out. According to developers, it was cut due to lack of time.
In version 1.0 it's harder to access than in the patches as it requires HEX-editing files or memory editing. In patch 1.1 and the later versions it's possible to unlock it by renaming the file mainmenurac.mnu to mainmenu.mnu, said file is located in tables/menu after extracting it from a8.dta. In 1.0 only this menu has a fully working and playable multiplayer mode, it's disabled by default but can be accessed by modifying game files or through memory editing. This multiplayer functionality was removed completely in later versions of the game.
Game Over Music#
The following track is heard only two times, it plays in the post-Sergio fight cutscene of "You Lucky Bastard!" and during the "Crème De La Crème" cutscene seen when failing to destroy Morello's plane.
Filename |
Sound |
|---|---|
13 - Game Over.ogg |
It was, however, supposed to be heard constantly in the Game Over screen even outside of the missions but it's not the case due to a mistake from the developers: the game is coded to play 13 - Game Over.mp3 instead of the actually-existing .ogg file with the same name. Activating this in-game requires converting said .ogg to a .mp3 file with the same name and placing it in the MUSIC folder or modifying Mafia.exe to instead play the .ogg file, simply renaming it does not work. Note that this music only plays when Tommy dies, a Game Over by other methods does not trigger it.
Unused Debug Message#
A message "GALXIAN BEST ARCADE FOREVER!" is supposed to appear when the debug console is opened. Because the debug console has been removed from the final game's files it goes unused.
"Better Get Used To It" Subquest Dialogue#
Inside the code for the mission "Better Get Used To It" are some Subquest dialogue lines with a deactivated script. When activated, Biff says in Czech "Slyšel jsem, že tvůj kámoš dobře řídí.", meaning "I hear, your buddy is good in driving". In the final game, this chapter has no Subquest.
Body Carrying#
The player was meant to be able to carry the bodies of dead enemies, it can be re-enabled and it's mostly functional but with its unique animations slightly buggy. This action cannot be done with the bodies of civilians.

Unused Camera Modes#
|
|
To do: |
There exists a camera mode for driving that is a top down view.
(Source: CukierChannel)
"Crème De La Crème" Oak Hill Path & Cutscene#
In the mission "Crème De La Crème" when chasing Morello he has two possible destinations that are chosen depending on how close the player drives to him, both on the countryside: going to the airport or falling off an incomplete bridge, in this path the player would fail the mission as it involves following Morello to his house in Oak Hill and then an unused cutscene is shown where Tommy is killed with Sam and Paulie by the gangsters. In the actual game, there's no way to make him drive there and the absence of this leaves it unrevealed where Morello lives. The cutscene is scripted to always show the protagonists in Falconer and is not shown if any other car is driven, indicating that originally the player wasn't able to choose a car in this mission.
Unused Textures#
The textures are located in the maps folder located in mafia/a6.dta.

Cars - Filename |
Sidecar Bike - 9motorka.4ds A sidecar bike. It's a bit glitchy and hard to drive. |
Bigfoot USA Flag - bigfoot.4ds A Bigfoot with a USA Flag Texture, based on the Bolt Model B. It was brought back for the console ports, where it's drivable in the Racing and Freeride modes. |
Bigfoot - bigfoot00.4ds Same as above, but with normal texture. |
Beatle Custom - brouk00.4ds A red beetle, probably a Volkswagen Beetle inspired car. It has some variations with untextured parts and a bit different model. |
Bulldozer - bull00.4ds A yellow bulldozer. If it was used, it most likely could have been found in the yard near Hoboken. |
Bus - bus00.4ds A white bus, most likely made by Bolt (since it's inspired by Ford buses). |
Panzer/Military Tank - panz.4ds A tank. Very unfinished: it doesn't have any textures, plus you can't steer at all (read: straight-line driving only). Probably replaced by Black Metal in the final game. |
Toyota RSC - toyota00.4ds The Toyota RSC concept car; most likely a placeholder since it doesn't fit with this game's 1930s setting. |
Tractor - traktor.4ds A 1930's tractor. It's a bit hard to get into; in fact, you need to "enter" from the rear wheels. |
Xeon - xedos00.4ds Mazda Xedos, in red color. Yet another real-life early 2000s car that was most likely used as a placeholder. |
Tram (ONLY VISIBLE IN CARCYCLOPEDIA) - Salina.4ds The same tram is seen during the normal game. As the name says, it can only be seen in the CarCyclopedia. |
Steamroller - valec.4ds An untextured model like Panzer, but it's driveable. Like Bulldozer, it most likely could have been found in yards. |
Damaged Volkswagen Jetta (ONLY VISIBLE IN CARCYCLOPEDIA) - jettad.4ds Damaged Volkswagen Jetta model. It can't be driven. |
Mutagen FWD "Drag Version" - cord_cabriolet00.4ds It's a Mutagen FWD based on Thor 812 Cabriolet. Due to its form, it's like a Drag Racing Car. |
There's also many truck models unused in the game's files.
Unused Truck Models |
|---|
Cars - File name |
truckbxx00.4ds It's the truck from the mission Just For Relaxation , with the "Atlantic Import" mark on it. |
truckbnajezd.4ds It's similar to the previous one, with a glitched "ghost" ramp on the back. |
truckmorph.4ds It's the truck used during Trip To The Country when you are trying to lose the gangsters. |
trucksplachtou.4ds Bolt Truck Covered with glitched bars. |
formulatruck.4ds It's the truck used in Free Ride Extreme, in three locations marked on the map. Ramp is added for the mission itself. Carcyclopedia only. |
These vehicles are intended to be used during FMVs.

FMVstaticTruckA01.4ds Bolt Truck Flatbed Blue |
FMVstaticTruckB00.4ds Bolt Truck Covered Green |

FMVthunderbirdz.4ds (also xxx.4ds) Bolt-Thrower with badges, slightly different shape and rear lights. |
FMVtruck09c.4ds Bolt Truck Covered Green |
There are also some early cars, which have some extra features:
- They can be driven only if you replace them. You cannot enter them without this method.
- They have different reflections (similar to those seen in pre-release screenshots of the game).
- You need to change gears manually, even if the gearbox is automatic.
- Tommy is placed in the middle.
- Some models are slightly bigger than the final ones.
"provoz" means "traffic" in Czech.
Early Vehicles |
|---|
Cars - File name |
bugatti.4ds Carrozzella C-Otto 4WD Blue, with different wheels. |
buik4_PROVOZ.4ds Wright Fordor LightBlue (not driveable). |
bus10.4ds This is an early version of the Bus, recognizable by its shiny reflections. |
chema64_PROVOZ.4ds Schubert Extrasix Green |
duesenberg.4ds Trautenberg Racing |
fordt2.4ds Bolt Ace Tudor Blue with different wheels. |
fordt2_PROVOZ.4ds Bolt Ace Tudor Blue with glitched wheel textures. |
hud01.4ds Guardian Terraplane Fordor Cream with different bumpers. |
hud02.4ds Guardian Terraplane Fordor Cream. This one's almost similar to the final model. |
miller.4ds Brubaker 4WD |
merced500k_PROVOZ.4ds Celeste Marque 500 White, with no spare wheel (not driveable). |
speedster_PROVOZ.4ds Bruno Speedster 851 White, with different bumpers and rear plate position. |

Swapping an undrivable vehicle with traffic models, you can find the reason why it is not possible to drive them. The wheels are not aligned and attached to the car. When the driver steers, the wheels assembly "steers" away from the car model. Also, the rear wheels can move, but those are stuck in the ground.

To do: |
Unused models of Tommy and other men wearing boxing gloves. As shown by other leftovers, these were related to a cut part of the mission "You Lucky Bastard".
Unseen Models#
There is a small hallway that is connected to the alleyway that is visited in the "Better Get Used to It" mission.

The zeppelin that spawns in the airport during the "Omerta" mission has an interior that cannot normally be seen, its existence seems to indicate Frank and his family were meant to be seen entering it.

The Pompeii Bar has an interior that was meant to be seen in a cut Subquest of "The Priest" mission.

(Source: CukierChannel)
During the mission "You Lucky Bastard" outside the boundaries an unfinished interior with boxing-related props spawns, it has proper collision despite missing the floor and walls. This, along with the unused boxer character models, are related to a cut part of the mission.
Unused Cutscenes#
The cutscene for winning the races in the cut Racing mode. It lacks the ground and, interestingly, the character animations differ from the ones seen in the prerendered video in the console ports.
Unused Sounds#
|
|
To do: |
The game's audio files are present in the sounds folder, which in the non-digital releases is inside a0.dta. NOTE: Dialogue highlighted in blue means that it is used, but it is there to make the unused quotes more consistent.
These quotes of a radio broadcast covering Neville Chamberlain's meeting with Adolf Hitler are from the "Prologue" cutscene and were meant to be the first lines of dialogue spoken in the game before immediately being followed by the lines between Tommy and Norman (00010130.wav onward). Notably, these quotes would have revealed the exact date Tommy decided to meet Norman. Despite these not being used, a radio can still be seen in the bar interior, and the 2020 remake Mafia: Definitive Edition somewhat restored these news as a readable newspaper found in the chapter "Just for Relaxation". Additionally, something curious is that the amount of found audio files varies between languages: 00010070.wav is missing in English and French but is present in German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. Czech has the least amount of audio of this broadcast, the first three are present but the rest are the renamed used quotes of Tommy and Norman's conversation (in this language they are 00010040.wav onward).

Regional Differences#
German Version Censorship#
In the German release, certain aspects were toned down:
- In-game blood has been removed, due to this the "Level of Blood" slider was also taken out. Note that the blood in cutscenes remains intact.
- On-foot pedestrians cannot be killed.
(Source: SchnittBerichte)
Czech Launcher Hidden Image#
The launcher of the Czech retail release features a hidden image of a completely naked Playboy model and actress Petra Verkaik standing on a yacht or a cruise ship in the sea. In order to bring this up the player the needs to hold Shift and press Right Mouse Button 30 times in different spots of the launcher's main image.

In the first cutscene of "The Running Man" the majority of languages refer to the baseball bat-wielding gangster as Louie, only in the Czech version he is called Robert. Mafia: Definitive Edition later used the international name for all languages, including Czech. Also, the Brazilian version alters this line a bit by making this gangster be told to hit Tommy, instead of being like the rest of the languages (where Tommy is told that he will be hit).

- In the race section of the mission "Fairplay" (06-03), which is notoriously troublesome for some players, the difficulty of the opponents' AI was reduced due to player feedback.
- Collision was added to the "Fairplay" racetrack in order to fix an unintended shortcut which involved going in the wrong way for a bit and could be exploited for a fast and easy way to complete the 06-03 section.
1.2 Patch#
A menu was added at the start of the 06-03 section of "Fairplay", which adds functions that allows players to freely choose the opponents' AI difficulty from Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard and Extreme, it also allows vehicle damage to be ON or OFF (in the previous versions it's permanently ON). This difficulty menu was carried to the console ports.
Digital Releases#
Similar to what happened with its sequel, in 2017 (after it had been delisted since 2012) the game was re-released on digital stores such as Steam and GOG and all the memorable music tracks from the 1920s that used to play in various parts of the game were removed due to expiring licenses, resulting in a quieter experience than previously. The audio files themselves were not deleted but they were edited to become 17-second clips of pure silence, here is a list of said files and what song they contained.

Oddities#
The Cavern Texture
The texture used for The Cavern building that appears during the Tutorial mode is rather interesting: the parts unseen in the model showcase the entirety of the real life picture used for it, it has the largest resolution of all (1200 x 1600), and it's the only texture in the entire game stored as a .jpg file.

Epilogue Notepad Message
In the "Epilogue" cutscene Tommy is in jail looking at a notepad, there is a hidden developer message on its texture. Due to the low quality, it is very hard to determine what is exactly written but some of it can still be approximately transcribed.
