Kid Dracula (Game Boy)

Kid Dracula is a rather silly Game Boy spin-off of the Castlevania series, and a pseudo-sequel to the Famicom game of the same name.

Regional Differences#

Title Screen#

Japan

US

In the Japanese title, Kid Dracula stands atop his castle which is fashioned into the game's title. A speech bubble reads "Push Start". In the US version, Kid Dracula's head has been moved upwards, redrawn to be smaller and shaded, and his cloak has been fashioned into the game's title instead.

Intro#

Japan

US

The intro scene in the Japanese version features a church bell tower. To comply with Nintendo of America's policies at the time, it was replaced with a generic castle spire likely based on the one in the NES game's title screen, for the US version (but the bell sound effect was retained).

Gameplay and Level Changes#

Many gameplay changes exist, mostly to increase the difficulty.

  • In the Japanese version, enemies that die stay dead. In the US version, enemies respawn as soon as you move half a screen away.

US

The spell text was reduced by one character for some reason.

The Japanese version starts you off with four lives and 20 coins. The US version halves the life count and removes the coins.

1-2#

Japan

US

The big heart was replaced with a small one.

1-3#

Japan

US

The maximum heart increase was replaced by a big heart.

The three ghost boss characters of Level 1 have had the symbols on their foreheads removed and the tops of their heads rounded due to their unintentional resemblance to Ku Klux Klan.

In addition, the bosses gained more health in the US version.

Song Titles#

Similarly to Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, the songs in the Japanese version's sound test all have unique titles, whereas in the US version they are just named "BGM1" through "BGM20".
