Hori GameCube Controller Test

A GameCube controller... on a Super Famicom? No, your eyes do not deceive you.

The Hori GameCube Controller Test cartridge is a very strange piece of history. The Nintendo Gateway System was a service where Nintendo and LodgeNet teamed up to put Nintendo consoles in certain hotel rooms and on certain planes so consumers could rent them out for one hour at a time. The service required a controller with extra buttons to do things like go back to the service's main menu, so custom controllers were made for this service by Hori. This cartridge was used by Hori to develop and test the GameCube LodgeNet controllers for this service. Why they used a Super Famicom cartridge is anyone's guess, but it makes for a strange image.

The Nintendo Gateway System was formally discontinued in 2008, though some airlines kept it running until 2013. The cartridge was found by Rogue Orange and dumped by Hard4Games to the Internet Archive on March 18, 2026.

Unused Graphics#

Graphics of a Nintendo 64 controller are loaded into VRAM. Above is the VRAM itself...

...and here is a mockup of the controller. There doesn't appear to be a way to display it in the software, but it suggests that this cartridge was previously used (or based on one that was used) to test N64 LodgeNet controllers.
