Diskcheck

Diskcheck is a tool for developers and manufacturers to check if the contents of a Wii disc were burned correctly prior to submitting or using it.

It's perhaps more famous for its banner music, a simple drum loop, being erroneously used in the American release of Cars and early copies of Rayman Raving Rabbids.

Factory Features#

Diskcheck-1161-demo.mp4

The source code for Diskcheck, which was leaked in the July 2021 Nintendo leak and can be found in DIAG4RVL.zip/trunk/SDK/build/tests/diskcheck, contains additional features labeled under UJI_VERSION (referring to the Nintendo manufacturing plant in Uji, Kyoto) that would have been enabled if the tool was built for factory use: the most recent factory version given is version 1.161. These features are the ability to check the CRC16 code of individual partitions rather than the entire disc at once, as well as being able to check the CRC16 codes of installable WAD files on the disc. The accessible partitions are GAME (game data and code), UPDATE (update files for the system menu and IOSes), INSTALLER (channels that the disc can install, e.g. the Mario Kart Channel), and EXTRA (unknown).

The video above is a demonstration of version 1.161, which was compiled from scratch and uses Wii Fit Plus as an example due to it having an INSTALLER partition. The HOME menu option is still available, but is hidden due to the amount of text on screen.

Revisional Differences#

Version 1.01 has a different text layout, as well as adding a feature to return to the HOME menu that version 1.0 lacked.
