Unused Textures#
Steam Leftovers#
A lot of leftover game icons from the original army-green-colored rendition of Steam can be found at the "vgui\steam\games" directory.
Dummy Texture#
A dummy texture can be found in the engine folder of hl2_textures_dir.vpk.
Snow & Ice#

A set of snow and ice textures that go unused in the final game. These were intended for the scrapped arctic section of the game, which included the Borealis. They were later used in Mossman's transmission in Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

Inside an inconspicuously named folder is this picture of a cat. This is probably the most well-known unused texture from Half-Life, due to how frequently it crops up in various Garry's Mod miscellany.
This texture was apparently meant for regression testing while they were rewriting the materials system for The Orange Box, and somehow it made it all the way into the final release.
Hydra#
The textures for the cut Hydra lies in both the effects and sprites folder.
Prototype HUD Leftovers#
The HUD sprites featured in early screenshots still exist inside the game's files, including digits, weapon icons, item icons, and damage icons. The final game instead stores all of its icons in fonts. There are also graphics for Half-Life weapons scattered around, intended to be used for its Source engine port, Half-Life: Source. This HUD seems to use OCR-B for its text instead of DIN 1451 and Verdana.
Notably, special damage type indicators similar to Half-Life are included, the final game does not feature any aside from poison.
There is also an alternate set of clearer weapon icons with no text, and some different weapons:

Seems to be for an early version of Portals Chell's facemap. There are no models to this, only textures. "Boxrocket" is the codename used for the Source Filmmaker, which had been released with the TF2 updateMeet the Pyro' in 2012.
This is not present in the 2004 retail version, but was added when Half-Life 2 was upgraded to Source 2009 branch in 2010.

dev#
There are a number of development-related textures in the dev folder, along with several unused textures for things like brick buildings and signs.

Unused Achievement Icon#
In the game files, under materials\vgui\achievements, there is an achievement icon for finding G-Man sightings. There is no corresponding name and description for it on hl2_english, however. Judging by the name hl2_find_allgmans, it could indicate that it would be similar to Lambda Locator.
Unused Model textures#

Unused can textures#
In the game files, there are 2 unused textures for the popcan. The textures are named popcan02a.vtf and popcan03a.vtf respectively. They would have appeared in the vending machines, however, they make an appearance in Episode 2.

Unused 1984 novel texture#
In the game files, there is a texture sheet for George Orwell's 1984 novel. The texture itself is in props_junk\garbage_001a, and also appears in Counter-Strike: Source's assets.
Unused pitchfork texture#
The texture props_junk\phys_objects03a is used for the harpoon prop, though would also have been used for a pitchfork that never saw a model for it.
Unused HUD icons#
resource/HalfLife2.ttf, the font file used for the game's logo and all the HUD icons (and health/HEV/ammo counters) contains some unused icons built into it.
Weapon and Ammo icons#
Icons for three weapons can be found within the font file. Notably, the Tau Cannon icon got re-used as the Physics Gun icon in Garry's Mod.
Squad icons#
Unused icons exist for the squad of rebels and medics following Gordon when they are on the move.
