Godzilla: Unleashed (PlayStation 2)

You would assume that Godzilla: Unleashed is a port of the Wii game of the same name to the PS2. It's not. It's just Godzilla: Save the Earth with the stages and story mode from the Wii game, half the framerate, and two "new" monsters that are just clones of existing monsters. Oh, and all the monster textures were hideously oversharpened, for some reason.

Unused Map#

Watch on YouTubeA very basic test map called PS2_60. It's a large flat square plane with two buildings and exactly one crystal spawn point. This setup is reminiscent of the Arena test stage from Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, which served a similar purpose. The file was last modified on 2007 October 12 ‏‎at ‏‎11:06 AM in the US version and 2007 December 10 ‏‎at ‏‎1:22 PM in the European version. The European version has some byte differences in the LevelData, but it's unknown if these actually affect anything.

Unused Announcer Voiceline#

This voice line is present with the rest of the announcer's lines. It replaces the "Rage" voice line from Save the Earth, but the developers didn't want it to play. Rather than removing the code to play it, they just added an extra space to the end of the filename. So it's called "Rage " instead. The line itself is pretty strange, too. Some guy who's not the normal announcer says "Critical Mass" with a very weird delivery. (It sounds more like "CRITICAAAAAAAAL MAAAAAAAAAAAASS")

Unused Music#

The entirety of the Wii version's soundtrack is included in the PS2 version. As a result, the themes of King Caesar, Varan, Mechagodzilla, Biollante, and Titanosaurus are unused. Since these monsters are exclusive to the Wii version, the songs associated with them will never play in this game. (Unlike Save the Earth, Biollante is not in this game in any capacity.) The one exception is Krystalak's theme, which was reused for Battra.

Unused Rage Attacks#

Watch on YouTubeAll the rage attacks from Godzilla: Save the Earth are present in this game. The inputs were simply disabled by swapping out the rage mode flag with another one. Note that some other rage-related attacks, like Gigan's teleport attack and Orga's rage throw, weren't disabled, and Baragon can still activate his rage attack while burrowing underground.

There are at least two differences from Save the Earth: Megalon's charge up sound is different, and Orga's beam hitbox was removed.

Battra doesn't have a rage attack, and Obsidius's rage attack is a broken version of Orga's. He doesn't fire his beam or create a shockwave, which makes it functionally useless.

Unused Barrier Impact Particle#

Watch on YouTubeThe same barrier impact particle from Save the Earth was reused in this game, despite it not matching the new color of the barriers. However, there is an unused particle in the game files that was intended to replace the STE particle. It goes unused because the developers accidentally replaced a leftover particle file from Destroy All Monsters Melee rather than the particle file that's actually used by the game.

Unused OTS Camera#

Watch on YouTubeThis camera mode was used in Godzilla: Save the Earth's challenges and was originally supposed to be used in its story mode before it was cut. While similar to Unleashed's "story" camera, the OTS (over-the-shoulder) camera allows you to move the camera using the right analog stick, whereas the story camera can't be controlled and stays in a fixed position behind your character. The story camera transitions into the versus mode camera when entering combat. The OTS camera does not, but it allows you to lock onto opponents by pressing L2. In Save the Earth, you could also unlock the camera by pressing R3, however, this does not work in Unleashed. The reticle was also removed.

Watch on YouTubeThe menus are set up for 16:9 despite there being no official widescreen setting. This is probably just a result of the developers porting the menus straight from the Wii version, but it's still interesting.

Cheat Codes#

Day Select#

Create a save file in story mode if there isn't one already. At the main menu, hold Up and press X. The code input area will appear. Enter 0829xx (where xx is the number of the desired day minus 1, e.g. 06 for day 7) as a password, then select a save file in story mode to go to the chosen day.

All Power Surges#

The cheat code 284519 exists in the game, but wasn't ever mentioned in official sources. It's supposed to grant you all power surges in story mode, but for some reason, it automatically triggers the Tyrant ending for monsters from all factions besides Mutants. This cheat also exists in the Wii version.

G:STE Cheats#

Watch on YouTubeEvery cheat code from Godzilla: Save the Earth is still present in the game's code, but they are not accessible through normal means.
