This is a sub-page of Proto:The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Late 1997 Overdump/Text.
Notes#
The messages in the Overdump can be found starting at 0x10DFEE0.
Like the final game, the prototype uses a variant of Shift-JIS. However, while the final game uses 000B XXXX as a control code to control color, this build uses 0013 XXXX.
0004 XXXX and 0012 XXXX are also used as control codes, but their functions are currently unknown.
While the Overdump has much less text, the overall order of the messages is similar to the final game.
Keep in mind that, at the time these messages were written, B was the action button, while A was for items.

Given its placement amongst other sign text, this was likely a sign posted next to a Goron. This message is a transliteration of "Welcome Goron City" (Uerukamu Goron Shiti), the first in this text sequence to use the final Japanese name of the location. Interestingly, the arch over the entrance of Kakariko Graveyard in the final game reads "Welcome Kakariko Rain" (Uerukamu Kakariko Rein) in Hylian, though it may be intended to say "Welcome Kakariko Graveyard" (Uerukamu Kakariko Reien). |

The final game steers Link towards a Deku Tree -> Dodongo's Cavern -> Jabu-Jabu dungeon order, though Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly can be completed before Dodongo's Cavern by progressing far enough in the cavern to obtain Bombs, then exiting and heading for Zora's Fountain. However, data miners previously discovered hints that these dungeons were conceived to be completed in any order, including an unused Saria message and an unused Kaepora Gaebora message. This early script serves as additional confirmation. |
