Global Testfire

This article has a talk page!

This is a sub-page of Proto:Splatoon 2.

Before Splatoon 2's release, there was a demo released called the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire which allowed players to experience the online multiplayer of the game in several one-hour sessions. The demo was released on March 14, 2017, over four months before the final game's release.

Early Gear#

The Testfire includes early versions of gear present in the final game.

Headgear#

Hed_COP000~Hed_COP003#

Early versions of the headgear worn by players in the Salmon Run game mode, all 4 files are the same but colored differently. Splatoon_2_Testfire_Salmon_run_hat.png

Clothing#

Clt_COP000#

An early version of the gear used in the Salmon Run game mode. Unlike the headgear, this gear only exists in the orange color. Splatoon_2_Testfire_Salmon_run_gear.PNG

Clt_HAP001#

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Specifically: Get model images and in-game screenshots.

To do:
Add explanations for all weapons. Possibly videos as well?

Data for several early versions of weapons (and entirely cut weapons) are still present in the Testfire, with varying degrees of completion.

Levels#

To do:
This could probably get its own subpage if enough levels are recorded.

The Global Testfire build contains all the levels in the story mode, the only thing it's missing is the necessary models, sounds, layout, and other assets needed to load them. Using assets from the March 2017 build, it is possible to load some of these. However, painting the ground will not work for an unknown reason. While these aren't necessarily representative of how these levels looked and sounded back then, we can still get an insight into how they played during this point in development.

Octo Canyon intro#

To do:
This needs to be re-recorded with footage from the testfire.

Watch on YouTubeThis cutscene is mostly similar to the final game, but there are still some differences.

  • Marie doesn't face the camera.
  • Marie is missing most of her animations.
  • A longer animation is used when the player gets the Hero Suit.

Bomb Rush Blush#

Watch on YouTubeThe boss fight as a whole is very different.

  • The "ink shower" attack is missing.
  • The spinning hand attack is missing.
  • The bomb rush attack is missing.
  • A truck with Callie on it seems to circle around the player, however, Callie does not have any animations at all.
  • At the spawn, a sardinium can be found to the left, and a zapfish can be found to the right, making it possible to skip the boss entirely.
  • The rainmaker is a special in this build that lasts forever, however, it cannot be fired, making it softlock the level until you respawn/restart.

The cutscenes in this level are completely unfinished in the Testfire.

  • All of the camera shots are static.
  • All of the dialogue requires the player to press A to continue, instead of automatically progressing like in the final.
  • Callie has dialogue in the cutscene that plays upon defeating DJ Octavio. In the final, only DJ Octavio speaks in said cutscene.
  • The level ends immediately upon progressing through all the dialog in the last cutscene.

Playable Octolings#

To do:
Redo the renders. Also are these present in the final game as well?

The playable Octolings that were later released in the Octo Expansion have early draft models present in the files for both the Global Testfire, AND the March 2017 build.

Both models are based on the enemy Octolings from the previous game, and have no unique voice clips.

Octoling Boy#

The Octoling boy seemingly uses a placeholder Inkling boy model with the rival Octoling eyes, along with unique eyebrows not seen in any of the other models. It should be noted, that although hard to see, said eyebrows lack a special form of bump mapping used on most Inkling/Octoling player models to simulate shading. This causes the eyebrows to take on a flatter appearance that can only be properly seen when viewed with certain colors applied to it (darker shades of greens, blues, etc).

An early version of the Octoling boy hairstyle also exists for it, although it is very simplistic, only having one tentacle that swoops to the side. The textures for the hair model are also blurry and are of an overall lower quality.

Because this model is based on the enemy Octoling design, we can assume that with some major edits to the models, this is what a male enemy/"rival" octoling would look like, which is something that has never been seen in Splatoon, neither in concept art or in any of the three existing games in the series. Splatoon_2_Testfire_Octoling_Boy_T-Pose.png

The Octoling boy model can be loaded in-game using the debug menu. (This image is from the March 2017 Build, but the same model is re-used for the Testfire). Splat2_Beta_Octo_Male_V2.png

Octoling Girl#

Similar to the Octoling boy, the Octoling girl also loads a placeholder Inkling model as well. Strangely enough, the Octoling girl borrows the inkling BOY assets, as well as re-using the enemy octoling eye textures and hairstyle.

Like the Octoling boy model, the hair textures are blurry and are lower quality compared to their final counterparts. Unlike the rival male, however, the eyebrows and other smaller details are much more finalized. Splatoon_2_Testfire_Octoling_Girl_T-pose.PNG

Same with the Octoling boy, the Octoling girl can also be loaded in-game with the debug menu (The female model also exists in both the Global Testfire, AND the March 2017 build). Splat2_Beta_Octo_Female.png

Audio#

Music#

Early versions of battle themes by the in-game band Wet Floor could be heard in the Global Testfire. The version of "Inkoming!" that played in a match was an instrumental version, while the version with vocals played on the title screen.

Early Weapon Kits#

To do:
There are some third (and fourth?) weapon kits listed in Param.pack for specific weapons. I'm not sure what they're for.

Early weapon kits for every weapon in the game are listed in Param.pack. Every single weapon kit was changed in some way, with only a couple (Splattershot Jr., Jet Squelcher, Dynamo Roller) being exactly the same in the final. Some are unfinished, and use the Splat Bomb and Sting Ray as placeholders.
