Unused Courses

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Proto:Mario Kart 7.

This page or section needs more videos.
There's a whole lotta words or pictures here, but not enough videos. Please fix this.
Specifically: Make videos showcasing each of the unused courses.

Although only three courses are actually used in the autodemo, using the Debug menu, it's possible to access the rest of the courses. Notably, GCN Yoshi Circuit would later return in Mario Kart 8 as a DLC course, DS Mario Circuit would appear in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as part of the Booster Course Pass DLC, and SNES Mario Circuit 1 would get its third return in Mario Kart Tour.

Early Tracks#

Gctr_WuhuIslandA#

A very early version of Wuhu Loop. The version used in this build is Gctr_WuhuIslandE3.

Notably, it comes with early, unfinished 3D model geometry. Presumably in the middle of the process of converting the 3D model from Wii Sports Resort into a Mario Kart track.

General Differences

  • The shortcut after the first tunnel is missing.
  • Underwater section with the castle in front of the checkpoint is missing.
  • There are no mini ramps.
  • The alternative path at the lighthouse before the finish line did not yet exist.
  • No skybox.

Removed Tracks#

Wii_LuigiCircuit/Wii_LuigiCircuit2#

Luigi Circuit from Mario Kart Wii. Trying to play this course will crash the game, since the files for this track aren't present.

Test Tracks#

test_SfcCourse_lightOFF#

An unused test course, which is Mario Circuit 1 from Super Mario Kart, that has no shadows. Compared to Mario Circuit 2 in the final game, this iteration of Mario Circuit 1 heavily borrows its aesthetics from Mario Circuit 3 in Mario Kart Wii, and seems to be mostly a direct port from Mario Kart DS' own Mario Circuit 1 remake.

test_SfcCourse_lightON#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: This course has an unused replay. See if it can be reenabled.

Same as test_SfcCourse_lightOFF, but with shadows on. Likely to test the shadows.

test_YoshiCircuitGC#

Yoshi Circuit from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

test_YoshiCircuitDS#

The Mario Kart DS version of Yoshi Circuit from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

It's possible both versions of this track were ported to test the amount of polygons the 3DS can render, as well as the difference in scale between each version.

test_MarioCircuitDS#

Mario Circuit from Mario Kart DS.

test_Edge#

Test track that was possibly used for primary collision testing. It comes with many different ramps in various angles and lengths, as well as some with boost panels.

There are also a few boulders that roll down some of the ramps.

Notably this model is largely based off the cycling test course found within Wii Sports Resort, removing the humps while also extending it with various ramps and Dash Panels for Mario Kart testing.

test_Pipe#

Another collision test track, this time with many pipes similar to those found in Piranha Plant Slide.

test_Divide#

A simply constructed track whose 3D model is divided into 8 sections, each marked with its section number. Upon trying to load it from the debug menu, it crashes.

Most likely for testing the fading in and out of 3D geometry for performance boosts.

test_post#

A large flat plain containing two rows of five large white pillars.
