This is a very early demo build of what would become Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, which goes under the game's original name Gran Turismo 2000. Compiled on February 13th 2000, a month before the PlayStation 2's Japanese launch, it aimed to showcase the console's power by displaying recognizable cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 2 with updated graphics and performance.

Six cars are featured in the demo, only one of which is accessible to the player, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V GSR '98, which can be driven around a single track, Seattle Circuit. In gameplay, the player's position is counted as expected from a race but it is impossible to actually complete the race. The player is given a time limit of 2 minutes to drive around the track before the game abruptly cuts to a replay then back to the main menu.

Peculiarities#

  • Two songs are heard in the demo; An early version of Daiki Kasho's Mirage that is missing some later sections of the song, which is prominently featured in the demo's intro sequence and gameplay. As well as this, a menu theme plays during the press start and car select screen that is completely different from anything heard in the final game. It curiously seems to sample Mirage as part of the instrumentation. Aside from this demo, it was also used in most of Gran Turismo 3's demo builds before being replaced with An Endless Journey for the Store Demo Volume 2 and Slipstream for the final game.
  • Leftovers of Special Stage Route 5, shown in an non-interactive tech demo (part of footage of it appears in this build's intro) appears in the OLDCOURSE folder of the GT2K.VOL, although only highway.gtc and highway.img remain (there is no highway.crs or highway.ene anymore, so the track cannot be loaded).
  • The turn signboards on the track are based on those appearing in the GT2 demos, rather than based on final GT2 versions.
  • By going reverse and heading for the left-most tire barrier, it is possible to break out of the course.
  • The LOD models are based on GT2 models: (left is normal quality, right is lower LOD quality)
