A demo version of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec was included in the Official PlayStation 2 Magazine Europe Demo 5. This build is pathetically early in development, looking like an edited version of the second game.
The demo in the PurePure 2 Volume 0 2001 February disc (a compilation disc given out for members of PlayStation Club in Japan) appears to be identical, if not the same, to this build, as both have the same VOL compile date of November 19, 2000.
General Differences#
- The Arcade Mode menu music is reused from the Gran Turismo 2000 demo.
- The early track selection screen features a layout preview with the game following a blue road which eventually formed the layout of the track you wanted to race on.
- In the Arcade Mode car selection screen, you can zoom in on cars with R1 and R2. This feature was cut from the final, probably because it's redundant.
- A similar feature exists in Tourist Trophy.
- The early HUD is very different, with the position placed on the right side and looking like an edited version of the Gran Turismo 2 style.
- The results screen is based off Gran Turismo 2 as well. In this build, it appears to be in an unfinished state, as you aren't supposed to see the results screen anyway because the time limits are too short. The finish theme also reuses Gran Turismo 2 music (probably as a placeholder).
- The start theme is also reused from GT2, it's the GT World League theme.
- The pause menu looked very different, resembling the first game's pause menu.
- The ability to remove the HUD during replays is not present yet.
- The wrong way indicator is not all-caps like in the final version.
- In Arcade Mode, you choose a car before you choose a track to race on, just like in Gran Turismo 2. The order was changed in the Store Demo Volume 2.
- The Arcade Mode car selection screen has some minor differences. Most notably, there is a different background video, using shots from GT2 and 2000 (probably as a placeholder). Other differences worth noting are that the UI would invert the background colors in this build, the arrows on the sides of the screen would flash, and car manufacturer logos would originally show.
- Some of the menu sounds were different. The selection sound became the scrolling sound in the final version, while the scrolling sounds here were reused from GT2.
Tracks#
Other than Trial Mountain and Laguna Seca, which are featured on the demo without codes, there are several other tracks in this build that are only accessible with cheat codes. They range from tracks that just started development to tracks that were very different to tracks that were very similar.
