General Differences#

  • The player could press any button to get past the title screen instead of being required to press Start.
  • The chapter and scene name of the level is not displayed while the game is paused.
  • Ninja Imps are still colored green in this build.
  • A few of the bonus books are either placed in different locations or flat out missing from some levels.
  • Time is measured only in seconds for most time-based challenges.

The ending cutscene did not show Ghoulsville-In-The-Gloom in the distance nor Baron Von Ghoul flying in the direction of Cooper and Amber.

Gameplay from an older build of the game is displayed on the Choose A Game menu instead of character animations. These are actually just videos that were repurposed from the E3 2003 build.

Chapter 1#

A repurposed menu video from Chapter One Complete.

Chapter 2#

A repurposed menu video from Who's the Daddy.

Chapter 3#

A repurposed menu video from Kung-Fu Conservatory.

Chapter 4#

A repurposed menu video from Hunchy Punchy.

Chapter 5#

A repurposed menu video from Pirates' Dinner Party.

Graphical Differences#

Prisoner Graphic#

The prisoner graphic is an image of a ghouly with a key. GrabbedbytheGhouliesReview_05eab0e3.png

Bonus Challenges#

  • A placeholder image of a question mark with an orange background is used for locked challenges in the bonus challenge menu.

Proto

Final

  • An image of a colored trophy is placed next to a challenge after the player beats it rather than a colored bat.

Level Differences#

Chapter 1 Scene 1#

  • The deleted cutscene where Crivens gives Cooper a chair before fighting the Imps is still present.

Chapter 1 Scene 6#

  • The player starts off with 10 health instead of 15.
  • The soup can is positioned next to the vase at the start of the level rather than in the hallway.
  • There is no ghouly rave on the other side of the Lower Corridors.

Chapter 2 Scene 1#

  • The cellar is referred to as the "Wine Cellar". The name got changed in the final to remove the alcohol reference.

Chapter 2 Scene 2#

  • The kitchen has a strip curtain in front of the door to the freezer. This ended up getting removed in the final.

Chapter 2 Scene 3#

  • The ghouly on the other side of the Lower Corridors is missing.

Chapter 3 Scene 2#

  • The washing machine in the background is untextured.

Chapter 3 Scene 6#

  • The stack of books in the shape of a question mark is missing.

Chapter 3 Scene 19#

  • An animation of Mr. Ribs shaking the chicken egg is played instead of an idle animation.
  • The riddle piece is not present in the level yet, so the chicken egg from Chapter 2 Scene 22 is used as a placeholder.

Chapter 3 Scene 31#

  • The skeleton strapped to the table had its waist vaporized.

Chapter 4 Scene 1#

  • The Red Baron portion of the Baron von Ghoul boss fight is skipped entirely.

Chapter 5 Scene 13#

  • Ma Soupswill uses a small spoon to fight the Imps on the final level rather than the large one. While this adds difficulty, it makes sense why it later got changed to a large spoon.

Sound Differences#

Item Collection#

The soundbyte that is used when a question mark appears on a door is also played whenever the player collects an item. Separate sounds for collecting soup cans and rare books later got added in the final.

Medusa#

Proto

Final

The sound that plays when Medusa is looking for the player is of the beam that emits from her eyes instead of her snakes.

Other Differences#

Challenges#

Main Challenges#

  • The player is given thirty minutes to complete the fifth chapter instead of thirteen.

Bonus Challenges#

  • The player will win a trophy after completing a bonus challenge instead of a medal.
  • Poor Ol' Fiddlesworth is the first unlockable challenge due to code from the demo not being updated. Fiddlesworth's demo dialogue for advertising the game is still present as well.
  • Soak-a-Zombie! was originally a challenge where you have to defeat a certain number of zombies in order to earn rewards.
  • Challenge #13 is titled "Mind The Pots!"
  • While you can still earn platinum on bonus challenges, it does not do anything as the unlockable concept art menu is not implemented.

Proto

Final

  • The images on the main menu start off small but stretch to full size when the option associated with them is highlighted.
  • The images and text are arranged differently.
  • You can only replay chapters. The game gives you an option to replay both chapters and individual levels in the final.
  • The unlockable concept art menu is not present.

Weapons#

  • The scrapped weapon icons are used, much like the demo.
  • Syringes can be picked up to attack the Ghoulies.

Bugs#

  • The Trophy Room has a strange bug where if certain Super Scary Shock triggers are not activated, the level restarts and will be stuck in a loop until they occur.
  • Additionally, the player can sometimes slowly lose their health in this level for no apparent reason.
  • Some of Crivens' dialogue on Chapter 1 Scene 7 is not spaced properly.
  • The Embassy Ballroom has an invisible barrier in between the DJ booth and the dance floor. When the player attempts to throw the mummy over the booth, the mummy can get stuck and freeze in position.
  • The strip curtain in the kitchen can actually cause the player or the NPCs to get stuck, which might be the reason why it ended up getting removed.
  • After completing the game, the Play option on the main menu is still enabled and the game complete text is not displayed. When pressed, the player will keep being taken back to the final level as if it was never played.
