Development:Pokémon Black and White/Sprites/Trainer Battle Sprites

This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon Black and White/Sprites.

Out of all the trainer classes in the game, only the male Scientist, Officer, and Depot Agent were finalized in their first commit, and thus will not be shown here. The trainer battle sprites can be found at trunk/resource/trgra in the repository.

Did not receive a battle sprite until his design was basically finalized. First revision adjusts him to be a little bit shorter and adjusts a couple posture details, while the final's recolors the red at his left hand to be the same blue as the rest of the shirt.

One of the first trainers to be added to the game, and one of the last to be finalized. She went through a couple different poses, the first being similar to the female ace trainer's. First revision makes her hair less wide and adjusts a couple details on her skirt, and second revision makes the hair slightly less thick and moves her knees down slightly. Third revision changes her pose so that her whole body is facing the player, but has the opposite leg up in the air compared to the final and her hands in different positions.

Looked a bit different in the first version. He held a book instead of a Poké Ball, had teal pants instead of brown ones, and had his bag on his back instead of in his left hand. First revision has slightly different colors compared to the final, and final revision moves the sprite up by a pixel.

Originally used a red version of Lucas from Platinum as placeholder. First version of him shows him with two very rough extra frames that shows him jumping into the air. He, along with every other trainer in the game, would receive full animations in Black 2 and White 2, although his animation is him raising his Poké Ball, not jumping. Final version adds some more shading detail.

Elesa started out with a slightly earlier design, one which did not have leggings. This design only received a single revision, which adjusted one of the wires attached to her headphones. The next revision brings her in-line with her final design, which has a slightly different pose. The first revision of this design adjusts her left earpiece slightly and adds a color on her knee. The next revision makes her sprite wider, which means she's a little taller. After that, the wire coming from her right earpiece was shortened, and then the final makes a few small detail tweaks here and there, including removing that odd shine on her knee.

Skyla orginally had a different design, and a revision of this design got its own battle sprite earlier on, but never got a revision itself. The first sprite of Skyla's final design is fairly rough, and faces the opposite direction than her original sprite did. Her hand in this revision is also aimed more towards the player. The next revision adds enough polish to look finalized, and moves her hand to point behind her instead. The revision after that, however, move it back to almost point at the player. It also moves her hair bun down a little bit. Final version makes her a little taller and her feet rotated slightly, while also removing a small blue detail on her chest.

Next revision brings about the final design, but is fairly rough. His glasses are also black instead of blue. Next revision gives him his blue glasses, but leaves his eyes open. Had the most revisions out of any trainer in the game over the course of development. Originally had a different design, with a mostly-white hat instead of a mostly-green one. Was also not animated at first, like Cheren. Multiple minute changes were made to her animation frames in the last few months of development. At one point, however, a version of Bianca's sprite was committed that was seemingly accidentally not the animated version of her sprite. This was corrected a few days later, but interestingly, the solo sprite that was committed was not the green-hatted solo sprite from before she got her animation frames. She's slightly taller, and is holding her Poké Ball more upright.

First version of the female clerk didn't have its scratchpad cleaned up, revealing some extra designs, although most of them got cropped-out when it was inserted into the narc file. Top middle has very slight shading differences on her right hand. Top right sprite has slightly different hair and proportions on her backside, and some slight shading differences to the other two. From what can be made out on the bottom, the bottom left has even more different hair than the top sprites, bottom left-middle appears to be a very rough drawing, bottom right-middle has less detail than the previous ones, and the bottom right has the least amount of detail out of all of them except the rough drawing.

Iris had a few pose changes, and never gained a detailed sprite until the final. Some of her revisions include earlier drafts in the scratchpad, a couple partially cropped out after being inserted into the narc file. One depicts her doing a similar animation to one of Chili's revisions that show him with some extra rough frames. Iris, along with every other trainer in the game, would receive full animations in Black 2 and White 2, but it doesn't involve her jumping into the air.

She, along with every other trainer in the game, would be given full animations in Black 2 and White 2, although her animation is yawning, not hiding behind her hair. First version of the male cyclist didn't have its scratchpad cleaned up, revealing some earlier designs. Some were cropped out when it was inserted into the narc file, though. Middle-top has some slight shading differences on his pants, top-right has missing details on the wheel, his left foot doesn't have a shoe, and there's no seat on the bike. It's also missing a red bit above the front wheel. For the bottom: bottom-left has slightly different arms, a rough version of the bike sits in the middle, and the seemingly earliest sprite at the bottom right lacks a lot of detail and shading. Onto the first revision, he holds his Poké Ball lower, the wheels somehow lost detail, and the handle bars were redesigned. The red bit above the front wheel was also removed. Second revision has him holding his Poké Ball in front of him instead of to the side, wheels have proper transparency, and one extra finger on his left hand is now visible. Final version slightly tweaks the angle of the bike even more, and adjusts a few tiny details here and there.
