Version Differences

This is a sub-page of VS. Super Mario Bros..

This page will be covering version differences between the Famicom/NES game Super Mario Bros., the arcade VS. Super Mario Bros., the Famicom Disk System sequel Super Mario Bros. 2, and the Famicom Disk System game All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros.

General#

  • A high score screen is present in VS.
    • When a player gets a game over with a high score, a three character long name can be inputted.
  • The timer in VS. is faster.
  • The coin counter is updated from 2 digits in SMB to 3 digits in VS.
  • The time it takes for Hammer Bro enemies to chase the player is updated from 80 framerules in in SMB to 255 framerules in VS.1

Aside from the name change, VS. changed the original game's text font (minus the copyright symbol, oddly) to a new style with a shadow effect, which would later be carried over to SMB2 and ANNSMB. The color palette was also brightened, and the coin counter was expanded to three digits.

The power-up containing the Mushroom was moved in VS. replacing the 1-Up Mushroom. ANNSMB moves the 1-Up mushroom to the left but keeps both Mushroom power-up locations from SMB and VS.

Music#

Several of the game's music tracks had their instrumentation changed, resulting in a somewhat less "plucky" arrangement. The ending theme was also expanded with a second section, which was composed for the original game but cut due to space limitations; this second section would go on to be used in practically all future arrangements of the theme, including the one in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 and All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros.

Interestingly, Super Mario Maker and its sequel use the VS. arrangements of the tracks for its Super Mario Bros. theme.
