Note that the moss texture doesn't apply correctly; suggesting that the rock's model was different during development.
Funnily enough, the unused version has a proper normal map while the used ones use a blank normal map.

Environment textures that appear to show a very early build of the game, with noticeably rough textures and the absence of buildings and Miis.

'...But what does it mean?'
This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation!

A plain white bed edited near an island's wishing fountain. As this came from a presumably late-development build of the game, the following changes can be seen:

  • The wishing fountain is less detailed with different ground textures.
  • There's no Mii News Network logo before the headline text, and it is missing furigana above the kanji characters.
  • An early version of the Mii Wheel model is also partially visible on the image, appearing to be low-poly and not having any textures.
  • Both the aerial and fountain fireworks have a symbol that looks like 2 up arrows. In the final game, neither fireworks have an option with the 2-arrow symbol.
  • The bushes appear to look way more blocky.

This is most likely an early version of the "Self-Driving Bed Launches" report.

Unused Text#

In all language files inside Mals is "Year.msbt". This string is untranslated in all languages except Asian languages.

counter for years (following a number in the hito-futa-mi counting system)

Executable Strings#

Found at 0x27DBA49 in the ExeFS main file. VoiceText is likely the text-to-speech engine used both in this game and Rhythm Heaven Groove.

Thank you for using VoiceText. You need to contact our sales support team to obtain a valid verification file. This version is strictly for demonstration purposes only.
Jun 5 2025

Shortly after the string is a date of June 5, 2025. This may be a build date for the VoiceText library.

Deleted "Dummy" Folder References#

Present in all project.msbp files inside the Mals folder is references to a folder called "Dummy" which is no longer present in the final game. One of these references suggest that non-Japanese localization was being done by September 2023.

Internal Name#

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is known as "Colony" internally. While the island setting of the game could be viewed as a "colony", this may also be a play on "Clone", the internal name of Tomodachi Life.
