Tekken Tag Tournament improves on Tekken 3 by introducing a two-on-two tag-team mechanic and an even better soundtrack.
Development Mode#
The built-in Service Mode can be set to a development mode, which shows a few differences. Use the following code in the MAME debugger to activate development mode, then press the Service Mode button (F2 by default).

Main Service Mode Menu#
Normal |
Development Version |
|---|---|
Minor differences on the service mode's main menu:
- The ROM version is shown in the top right.
- The key legend at the bottom is replaced with the sub-CPU ROM version and date of first power-on.
- A new 'LED test' option is abailable.
Sound Test#
Normal |
Development Version |
|---|---|
In development mode, the sound test works a little differently:
- The words "DEVELOPMENT VERSION." are drawn at the top.
- A number of options are available to interact with the sound hardware directly.
- A message from the song is shown. (The message is usually the song's title.)
- Songs will continue playing all the way through. Normally, songs are limited to only playing for about 8 seconds before they stop.
LED Test#
The LED test screen presumably lets you test the LEDS on the arcade cabinet.
Unplayable Character#
The following character is not playable through normal means, requiring a cheat device.
Unknown#
Unknown has two variants, one is her unused version without the wolf spirit and one is her used version with the wolf spirit. The difference between the two is that the version without the wolf spirit cannot switch movesets, while her used version can. She even has a 2nd player costume that is never seen normally, as the player cannot play as her.
When her boss counterpart is played as, all of the stages between fights will be changed to Unknown's stage by default, and trying to fight Unknown as her will result in the game's framerate to drop, cause graphical glitches, and the wolf spirit will no longer follow Unknown and will instead merge each other.
She would eventually become playable in the console versions.
