Unused Graphics

This is a sub-page of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Unused Textures#

Unused Dialogue Symbols#

Four symbols from the first game are still present in the file that contains the dialog symbols. This includes coconuts, blue Star Chips, and two question marks: white and green.

Super Mario World 'P' Balloon Fruit#

P.

This texture is bundled with the Blimp Fruit's model but never used. The Power Balloon in Super Mario World is marked with a P as well, and grants Mario the same temporary power. The other fruits lack any similar textures.

Chance Cube X & O#

Wrong!Right!

These textures are bundled with ItemDice, but are never used. Compared to the final textures, they are very simplistic.

Storybook Frame Dummy Textures#

The storybook frame used in the game's prologue has two placeholder dummy textures for the content within the frame - one for the contents of the current page, and one for the contents of the next page. As the game fills the frame with the current camera view or a static snapshot of said camera view between transitions, these are never seen.

Duplicate Starship Mario Texture#

In the credits of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Starship Mario makes three total appearances. The first instance of Starship Mario uses a texture named MarioPlanet.2, but strangely enough, this specific texture is duplicated in the model archive. While the first instance of MarioPlanet.2 is used, the second one is not.

Unused Warp Pad Texture#

This texture, simply named grid, is bundled with the Warp Pad model but goes completely unused.

Sweet Mystery Galaxy's Jelly Bean Texture#

Bundled with a set of decorative background candies found in Sweet Mystery Galaxy is this texture, called JellyBeans01. It features four colored squares; dark pink, orange, green, and light blue. Despite the existence of this texture, Sweet Mystery Galaxy lacks jellybeans... yet, strangely, a very small portion of the orange square is used to texture the stick of the blue lollipop that floats in the background of the galaxy. This leaves the rest of the texture completely unused, and implies the existence of scrapped decorative jellybeans.

Puzzle Plank Galaxy's Grid Textures#

Speculative mock-up SMG2_Puzzle_Plank_Grid32_green.png SMG2_Puzzle_Plank_Grid32_brown.png

These two textures are included with a model in Puzzle Plank Galaxy; the large wooden block that the player is intended to wall jump through.
It seems that, judging by the colors of the model itself in the final game, these two 32 x 32 textures were likely placeholders meant for use before the final textures were applied, or color guides for the material shaders. On the final model, they are not mapped at all, nor do they have any associated materials. They also do not appear on any other model used in Puzzle Plank Galaxy.

Melty Monster Galaxy's Bowling Challenge Flags#

In-Game Flag Colors SMG2_Bowling_Challenge_Flag_Colors.png

In Melty Monster Galaxy's secret mission, The Chimp's Bowling Challenge, colorful pennant flags fly at either side of the goal ring at the end of the bowling challenge. Although the in-game flag colors only come in red and yellow, a third unused green color can be found in the flag texture. It's unknown why this color went unused.

Super Mario World Block Snake Colors#

The texture for the block snake reveals that it was originally intended to be brown, like its appearance in Super Mario World. The game uses shaders to make it appear purple.

Rightside Down Galaxy's Starting Planet Colors#

To do:
This seems to be just a common coloring method as part of Nintendo's shader pipeline, not an unused attribute.

Although it appears quite colorful in-game, the starting planet seen in Rightside Down Galaxy hardly sports any color at all. The game uses shaders to give it its colors.

Sweet Mystery Galaxy Planet Colors#

To do:
It's not an hidden early design, but rather how the different texture colors are combined with TEV shading to achieve the effect.

The MysteryCandyPlanet planet found in Sweet Mystery Galaxy appears pink and red in-game, but this is thanks to material shaders. Viewing the model without material shaders reveals a wildly different color scheme, and a somewhat different texture design.

UV Wrap Grid in Elite Octoomba Texture#

The texture for the Elite Octoomba has a leftover UV wrap grid in the empty spaces between the textures. The same is true for normal Octoombas too, as Elite Octoombas use a recolored version of their texture.

Unseen Kanji In Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet Texture#

The texture used for the spiked fences in Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet features two unseen Japanese kanji; the formal numeral kanji for 1 (壱) and 3 (参).

The Silver Chomp's True Colors#

The Silver Chomp/Homing Chomp appears silver in-game, but viewing its model and textures outside of the engine reveals its actual black coloring, which more closely resembles a generic Chain Chomp. The game employs shaders to give it the silver appearance it is named after.
