There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

To do:
There's leftovers from the DS titles, like the avatars and Create-a-tron. There's also a lot more unused objects that can only be seen via the "@ method glitch" like the "@PinocchioNose" and "@HauntedHouseBookshelf".

Scribblenauts Unlimited is the fourth game in the Scribblenauts series and introduces the object editor, more objects and adjectives, Maxwell's family, the removal of the stage-based progression system, and a whole lot of other cool stuff.

Unused Graphics#

Early Maxwell Sprites#

These sprites, most likely from an earlier point in development, are still in the game. The older one is located in PLATFORM/DATAVECTOR/HUMAN/PLAYER/MAXWELL.VEC while the newer one is in PLATFORM/DATAVECTOR/MAXWELL/TEXTURE.VEC. Interestingly, the second sprite is extremely similar to Maxwell's design in some early versions of Scribblenauts Remix, before his model was eventually changed to his Scribblenauts Unmasked design in a later update, though this version has slightly different highlighting on his rooster helmet and unshaded arms and legs compared to Remix's Maxwell.

Unspawnable Objects#

Some objects, like Edgar or Lily, cannot be spawned directly from the notebook, mainly because these items have a special character (that cannot be normally typed) in their names.

  • @black magic
  • @lily
  • @lily2
  • @green magic
  • @stone magic
  • @earth magic
  • @fairy magic
  • @frost breath

  • @julie
  • @genderblaster (a gun identical to the Grow Ray that flips an NPC's gender when hit)

  • @monstermagic
  • @creatatron
  • @lilyglobe
  • @meanoldman
  • @cursebreakingcane
  • @rumblebomb
  • @treetop
  • @treebottom (there are tops and bottoms for other trees as well)
  • @rein
  • @fireball (Wii U only)
  • @banner (isn't stationary compared to regular banner, and can be held)
  • @rope ladder
  • @livingskeleton
  • @laser beam

  • @mime (leftover Super Scribblenauts avatar data)
  • @goth (leftover Super Scribblenauts avatar data)
  • @goal (flag from the Super Scribblenauts tutorial)

If you create a living object such as @dj, @zombie, or @god, the result in Unlimited will be a living present that slides around, while in Super Scribblenauts they would actually be said object. Most rope-like objects create a rope made of purple rectangles.

If "@lily2" is selected, the game will crash if you are not in Edwin's Farm. When spawned, it checks your progress and displays the correct "stone Lilly". It has no walking left animation, causing it to do an odd moonwalk, but it can still walk right normally. Also, "@ropeladder" creates a bike that is missing one of its wheels.

These can be spawned by modifying the executable Scribble.exe with a hex editor. Change the byte at 0x136BF1 from 41 to 21 and save it. This will allow the player to type characters which normally cannot be typed like symbols and numbers without needing to use any further tricks like the slow laser trick (spawn a slow colossal laser and click on the shot projectile and edit the object, allowing you to store the laser beam projectile name (@laser beam) in the history where the player can press up to access the name and change the text after the @ symbol to something else, making this method accessible in all versions with the object editor (all versions except 3DS and mobile versions)). This also allows the player to spawn objects with a $ in the name like $Starite (a Starite which can be collected and completes any level (even if the required objectives have not been met yet), unlike the Starite that spawns if the player spawns a Starite using the notebook which cannot be collected). If the player attempts to collect the Starite while not in an actual level, the game will freeze the player in place, but they may reset the level or switch to a different area in order to escape.

Unused Levels#

To do:
How do you access these?

Watch on YouTube

There are three unused levels that were cut from the game. The collision data and entity indexes can be found in the "pmindex_for_code" xml file.

  • Unnamed Stadium Level (along with a lava variant and a water variant).
  • Unnamed Mall level (Used in the Wii U version, but scrapped from PC).
  • "kristjanshomestead"

Note that loading these levels normally might crash the game, as they do not have proper introduction cutscenes.

Stadium Level#

This unused level is fairly feature complete, with merits and a functioning mission. On the other hand, it doesn't have a proper background set up to it, but the collision works. Along with that, it is possible to load back into the level, the name of the level being "()".

This level was likely scrapped very early on and used for testing, as there are two variations of the level found in the game, one that spawns a pool of lava, and one that spawns a pool of water.

Similarly to the mall level, there is a screen transition that mirrors the underline screen transition.

Stadium Merits#

The stadium level has merits that can be unlocked, and can be found in the game.

  • Team Colors - Color us our team's colors!
  • Team Spirit - Give me a costume to join the mascots!
  • Play Ball - Create someone to perform the anthem!
  • Put Me In Coach - Give my lead-off hitter a bat!
  • You're My Favorite Player - Give me something for my favorite player to sign!
  • Sports Stuff - Give me sports equipment!
  • GOOOOAAALLLL - Create a goal I can score in!
  • Who Is Flying This Thing - Create someone to fly me!

Mall Level#

This level is present in the Wii U version of the game as Punctuation Plaza. It was a place where you could share and download other people's creations, and even give them a rating! The Mall was also supposed to appear in the PC version, however, it was cut very late in development and was replaced with the Steam Workshop, which is basically the same thing.

Unlike the stadium level, only the collision and the background of the map work, no missions or people are present.

kristjanshomestead#

kristjanshomestead is a simple test map, presumably created by and named after Kristjan Palsson, a 5th Cell employee. This level is so simple that it's just a small cluster of objects, a Hydra, a castle, some clouds and a Starite.

Oddities#

My Adjectives#

There are a few objects in the game titled "$MYADJECTIVES". Whatever they were meant for is a mystery, as there is no mention of custom adjectives or anything related to it. However, it doesn't do anything. It can only be seen with the notebook object or the $ method.

Unused Game Modes#

Some information for some unused game modes can be found in the game's files.

  • Survival
  • A multiplayer mode of sorts.

Survival#

While it is unknown what survival is and what it was used for, there are some leftover files that reference survival, all of which can be found in the "pmindex_for_code" xml file.

Filters and Colors#

  • survival_colors.exf
  • survival_materials.exf
  • survival_silly.exf
  • survival_sizes.exf

Events and Merits#

  • static_survival
  • survival_test_$merits
  • survival_test_waves

Survival Maps#

(All function the same as the normal maps.)

  • c_woods_survival (Unique metaforest map?)
  • su_hauntedhouse (Grave Manor)
  • su_woods (Metaforest)

Textures#

Other Scripts#

  • multiplayer_survival_adjlist
  • multiplayer_survival_drc
  • multiplayer_survival_objectcreation
  • multiplayer_survival_tv
  • multiplayer_survival_weapondefenders

Along with that there are some adjectives that can be applied through the @ method glitch or memory editing.

  • @survivalweapon
  • @survivalmodeattack
  • @survivalmodedefend
  • @survivalmodetarget

Internal Project Name#

Strings found in the executable reveals that it was named "Scrib3" during development.

Regional Differences#

The European release of the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions removes all the meme items from the game. This was due to the game's late release on those systems and followed a lawsuit that Christopher Torres and Charles Schmidt, the owners of the Nyan Cat and Keyboard Cat, filed against Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and 5th Cell for unauthorized usage of their characters.

Also, due to the late release, the European release of the Nintendo 3DS version includes the Mario and Zelda guest items. They were originally planned for the North American and Australian releases, but as the deal with Nintendo was made after that version was completed, 5th Cell was unable to add them.
