In Scribblenauts, you play as a boy named Maxwell who can summon physical objects via a notepad. In addition to the main puzzle mode, the game also features a sandbox mode and a level creator, where you can summon tons of different objects to mess around with.

Merit Icons#

|
To do: |
Eight Merit icons go unused. The corresponding Merit names are also still in the game's text:
"BOGEYMAN"
"JOKER"
"LONG YAWN"
"NO VEHICLES"
"RECYCLER"
"WELLREAD"
"WORLD UNDER PAR"
"YAWN"
The descriptions of these merits have all been removed, having been replaced with "MERIT WAS CUT."
Female Maxwell#
This unused character, who resembles a female Maxwell, can be found in both this game and its sequel, Super Scribblenauts. Scribblenauts Unlimited would introduce a female counterpart to Maxwell, his twin sister Lily, albeit with a radically different design. The Female Clone from Unlimited does noticeably resemble this unused design, though.
Regional Differences#
The Japanese version of the game was published by Konami, who decided to add a bunch of their characters that can be summoned through the notebook. Nearly all of these are also present in the Japanese version of Super Scribblenauts, with a few exceptions as detailed on that game's page.
Solid Snake, Old Snake and Big Boss (Metal Gear). They carry a Dart Gun, Assault Rifle and Gun object respectively.
Goemon and Ebisumaru (Ganbare Goemon).
Alucard (Castlevania). Yeah, no Belmonts oddly enough.
Pawapuro-kun (Power Pros). Comes with a Baseball bat (but don't bother trying to pitch at him).
Shiori Fujisaki (Tokimeki Memorial).
Manaka Takane (LovePlus).
Vic Viper (Gradius). Maxwell can fly it; tapping anywhere on-screen will make the craft drop fireball objects in a trajectory similar to missiles in the Gradius series.
Mimi and Nyami (Pop'n Music).
Revisional Differences#
In January 2013, a single-card compilation of the game and Super Scribblenauts was released exclusively in North America, entitled Scribblenauts Collection. This version of the game has some minor differences from the original release:
- The player can control Maxwell with the D-Pad in addition to the touch screen, as with Super. To make up for this, the language selection was replaced with a control menu.
- Maxwell can stay in the air forever with any item that supports flight (i.e., wings), another change that was added for Super. Most flight-based items in the original version only last for 1.5 seconds and take about 4 seconds to recharge.
- Some minor bug fixes, such as the Pi Merit now being obtainable.
- The removal of the "Lol Wut" item (which generated a large Maxwell head that can be worn as headgear). The reason why this specific item was removed is unknown.
