'...But what does it mean?' |
When the majority of your game is based around audio, there's bound to be some stragglers left sitting unused.
Sound Test#
|
|
This needs some investigation. |
Watch on YouTubeThis peculiar, fully functional sound test can be found unused in the game's data. You can select from 35 different SFX presets, with the "tap", "release" , "hold/drag" and "flick" actions in the bottom screen usually triggering a different sound. SEQARC_EFFECT1 and SEQARC_EFFECT2 are the archives containing the SFX meant to be used in this sound test.
The four speaker icons in the top screen represent four different slots where these presets can be loaded into. The presets loaded into these slots can be changed using the D-Pad. Pressing the A button will mute or unmute the currently selected slot.
The following patch replaces the Rhythm Toy Business Card with this sound test:

Music#
While there's only a small amount of music in this game that goes unused, what's here is indeed interesting. Something to note is that while a good chunk of music in this game is typically stored as streams (meaning the music is being played back like a CD player), the following tracks are stored as sequences (meaning the music is played back in real time, like a live orchestra).
BGM_TAP#
A jolly sounding track that most likely originates from a scrapped "tapping" rhythm game. Adding to this, there exists another track intended for this rhythm game.
VOICE_TAP#
A series of voices, some of which go unused. Something to note is that one of the voice clips was later repurposed for Board Meeting in Rhythm Heaven Fever. As stated before, this track was meant to be paired up with BGM_TAP, and when we pair them, we get...
BGM_TAP + VOICE_TAP#
The full TAP experience. VOICE_TAP might've been made first, and served as a basis for BGM_TAP, which might explain why these two were separated.
BGM_AMBIENT#
A relaxing track. This probably wasn't intended for a rhythm game, as it would be far too slow paced for one. Perhaps a rhythm toy?
SE_TEST_KARATE_BGM#
Additionally, the first four seconds of Karate Man from Rhythm Tengoku can be found unused in the American version of the game. Given the name "test" and Rhythm Heaven having some music sequenced into parts, this was likely a test to make sure it worked properly, and they chose Karate Man's music, for whatever reason.
Drum Pats#
Two drum pats can be found in the files as well. Possibly related to Beat Machine in some way?
Sound Effects#
In direct contrast to unused music, there are plenty of unused sound effects lurking here. A rhythm game typically stores its sound effects in SEQARC files (SEQuence ARChive), so those are where we'll be snooping around in.
Rhythm Games#
Some rhythm games have sound effects in their SEQARC files that normally go unused.

|
SE_MOAI_SUAN_AN |
An unused release sound for a third moai. |
|
SE_MOAI_SAN |
An unused shout sound for a third moai. |
Something to note is that SE_MOAI_KONNITI, SE_MOAI_GOKURO, and SE_MOAI_SAYONA all appear to cut off prematurely. This is intentional, as the gaps are supposed to be filled in by the moai's shouts. This becomes apparent when you look at how these sounds are ordered internally. In the SEQARC file, SE_MOAI_KONNITI is followed directly by SE_MOAI_WA (the player's shout). SE_MOAI_GOKURO is followed by SE_MOAI_SAN (the unused third moai's shout), and SE_MOAI_SAYONA is followed by SE_MOAI_RA (the CPU's shout). With this in mind, we now know that the words spoken are "こんにちは" (konnichiwa, meaning hello), gokurōsan, and "さようなら" (sayōnara, meaning goodbye).

Scrapped Rhythm Games#
Aside from the unused sound effects found in used SEQARC files, this game also contains many SEQARC files that go completely unused. It is most likely that these SEQARC files once belonged to various scrapped rhythm games, and that said files are all that remain of them.
SEQARC_SKA#
This file contains loads of different brass instruments. "SKA" could be referring to the genre of music, which might be an explanation for this.

As you can see, this rhythm game has had quite the amount of content developed for it (in terms of audio). It probably got a fairways into development before getting scrapped. Not all was lost though, as some sound effects were later recycled for other rhythm games in the series, and the general idea was recycled for Tap Troupe in Rhythm Heaven Fever. Ironically, some of the sprites likely meant for this game would later be found in that very game.
SEQARC_PAPET#
"PAPET" is a misspelling of the word "puppet", meaning that this rhythm game might've had something to do with them.
