Unused Pokémon

This article has a talk page! This article has a talk page!

This is a sub-page of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness.

Unsurprisingly, there are many placeholder and unused Pokémon hidden in the files of Time and Darkness.

Version-Exclusive Celebi and Mewtwo#

Taking a page from the book of their mainline relatives, Time/Darkness have version-exclusive Pokémon that can only naturally spawn in one or the other. Since trading Pokémon isn't possible, the programmers were kind enough to offer a solution for players who want to collect them all: if a received Wonder Mail involves a version-exclusive Pokémon, they will begin appearing in their respective dungeon(s). Such passwords were distributed officially through official websites and Nintendo WFC, but one can also easily obtain such mail shared by another player or by using a third-party Wonder Mail password generator.

That is, unless you want the version-exclusive Mythical/Legendary duo Celebi and Mewtwo, which are exclusive to Time and Darkness respectively. The Wonder Mail system doesn't allow jobs to involve any Mythical/Legendary Pokémon, so a password cannot be generated for them. The Pokémon Company instead opted to release exclusive event Wonder Mail over Nintendo WFC during limited timeslots, which involved the two Pokémon and allowed them to appear. These mails did not have passwords, although they can be transferred to other saves via Local Communication. In Japan, the relevant Wonder Mail is known to have been distributed between January-February 2008.

As of May 2014, Nintendo WFC is no longer running. Since the jobs had no passwords, there is no way to obtain these Pokémon without cheating, using Local Communication with someone who happens to still have the jobs on their file, or a Wonder Mail exploit which allows the recruitment of any Pokémon. GameFAQs has an uploaded save file with these jobs present.

(Japanese distribution details: Pokémon.co.jp)

Unused Pokémon#

There are a number of slots in the Pokémon ID list that have unused Pokémon data. Many of these appear to be used during the game's cutscenes internally, and many others appear to be placeholder data for Pokémon that would not appear in these games.

For the sake of completeness, several codes will be posted, which allows one to obtain these Pokémon in different ways. All codes are US only.

Chansey's Daycare

Time

Darkness

94000130 FFFB0000
0229C12C 00000???
1229C130 00000000
D2000000 00000000
94000130 FFFB0000
0229C06C 00000???
1229C070 00000000
D2000000 00000000

This spawns an egg containing the selected Pokémon in the daycare when Select is pressed. The egg will hatch immediately.

Hero Pokémon Modifier

Time

Darkness

122AD6E8 00000???
122AD628 00000???

This changes the ID of your Hero to the selected Pokémon. This maintains all of your original Hero's stats, moves, etc.

Partner Pokémon Modifier

Time

Darkness

122AD750 00000???
122AD690 00000???

This changes the ID of your Partner to the selected Pokémon. This maintains all of your original Partner's stats, moves, etc.

Hex. Value: 0x000

Type(s): Normal

Sprites: Totally blank; viewing it in Assembly shows a blank portrait. Adding it to the crossroads will either copy the other Pokémon on your party or show an invisible sprite. In-dungeon it appears as a jumble of sprites that can also affect Hero.

Name: ??????????

Category: ?????????? Pokémon

Ability(s): Overgrow

Genders: Genderless

Notes: Has Hero's personality when talked to. EXP gain is erratic, may be based on other Pokémon in the dungeon. Appears to be a placeholder just meant to populate the 000 slot so the real Pokémon can start at ID 1.

If a dungeon is entered while it's "masking" a party member in the Crossroads, the game will crash.

Using the Chansey's Daycare code does not work for this Pokémon, since 000 will just be recognized as "no egg"; you can use any multiple of 600 (i.e. 0x258) to spawn this Pokémon in the Daycare instead.

Notes: Group 25 Talk Type. This type is unique to shiny Celebi, but it isn't completely finished, so she will say messages like "Pink Celebi, Standby 1" in the Crossroads. This is the shiny Celebi used in the story; although she briefly joins the group as a guest Pokémon, you can never have her on your team permanently. Her stats and learnset are identical to the regular Celebi's.

Due to the way dungeon dialogue works in Future World dungeons, most of her lines are unused during regular gameplay. Recruiting a shiny Celebi through cheats or Wonder Mail exploits are the only ways to see most of her in-dungeon dialogue in-game.

Notes: Group 5 Talk type. These are 17 placeholder entries for every Arceus forme, who is not encounterable in any of the Explorers games. Its learnset is identical to the one in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl, except Cosmic Power is learned at level 2; this is the same learnset from Sky's placeholders, and it also includes the dummied-out Judgment move. Because there are... a lot, and they're all identical, each form has been condensed into one entry here.

Internally, these entries are referred to as "aruseusu" and "aruseusu_a" up to "aruseusu_p" in the Japanese versions only. Notably, all of these strings were replaced in the Japanese version of Sky by duplicates of "migawari", the Japanese term for the Decoy.

Sky would overwrite entries 0x217 and 0x218 with Sky Forme Shaymin and Origin Forme Giratina respectively, further suggesting the implementation of Arceus had already been abandoned early in Sky's development.

Sprites: Primal Dialga's sprites and portrait.

Name: Dialga

Category: Temporal Pokémon

Ability(s): Pressure

Genders: Genderless

Notes: Uses Hero's Talk Type. This entry is technically used for the Primal Dialga in the story, but it is unrecruitable, leaving several of its details unable to be seen in regular gameplay. It has a unique learnset, similar to Dialga's except for some rearranged/deleted moves. Notably, Heal Block is learned at level 50, which can't be seen in regular gameplay as the Primal Dialga is level 48 in its boss fight. This is identical to the moveset seen in Sky's Primal Dialga.

Bosses in the Explorers games will always know a random selection of all moves they learn up to their current level, meaning the changes to Primal Dialga's learnset were done simply to assure it would always know the same four moves when fought.

This indicates that these were probably slots reserved for more cutscene-only characters that were just not needed. They're all identical, so theyve been condensed into one spot here.

Uses Hero's Talk Type. Its category is the same as its name. If a dungeon is entered while it's "masking" a party member in the Crossroads, the game will crash.

All IDs after 0x257 are repeated copies of the IDs in 0x000 through 0x257, being completely identical besides their ID. This appears to be a failsafe put in by the programmers to ensure that the data beyond the valid IDs are still stable. However, when the hexadecimal becomes negative (after 0x8000), this failsafe seems to break down, leaving the rest of the IDs as glitch Pokémon.

Inaccessible Egg Moves#

Explorers of Time and Darkness introduced Pokémon Eggs as well as Egg Moves to the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. Certain jobs will reward the player with an Egg, which will contain a randomly chosen Pokémon present on the floor used as the job's destination. This will, of course, use the first stage of an evolutionary line if an evolved form is chosen.

Legitimate game-generated missions will only use the second half of most dungeons as a destination, and will never use sub-dungeons such as Upper Steam Cave. A select few Pokémon whose entire evolutionary lines only inhabit those earlier floors or sub-dungeons cannot be hatched from an Egg during regular gameplay for this reason, making their programmed Egg Moves normally inaccessible. However, the use of unofficial Wonder Mail generators can circumvent this very easily even without the use of cheat devices or emulation, as the game can accept a dungeon's early floors as a job destination through this method. The exception to this is Kecleon, which is never considered part of a floor's spawn table for the purpose of Eggs.

Chatot is another exception, this time in an official sense: the Official Extra Guide released in Japan included a special (region-free) Wonder Mail password for a mission to Spacial Rift B3F, which rewards the player with an Egg. It is possible through chance, as the guide notes, to hatch a Chatot knowing Egg Moves through this method. No other official Wonder Mail is known to have been distributed for any of the other Pokémon with inaccessible Egg Moves.

The following Pokémon cannot normally be hatched from an Egg. Locations marked with an * can be used by unofficially generated Wonder Mail to possibly reward an Egg containing one of these Pokémon:

Non-Baby Pokémon#

Snorlax and Marill have Egg Move learnsets with differences from their baby forms. However, there is no way to directly hatch a Snorlax or Marill legitimately, as the Explorers games always hatch Pokémon in their baby forms whenever one exists.

It is possible to use the Labyrinth Cave exploit to access their unique Egg Moves.
