European English Text Changes

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness/Regional Differences.

To do:

  • Add the Wi-Fi-related strings.
  • The English script went through a total of 4(!) revisions, going from NA EoTD -> EU EoTD -> NA EoS -> EU EoS. Document those other changes on the pages for Explorers of Sky.

The English script went through a second pass when Explorers of Time and Darkness were localized to Europe, revising a significant number of lines and strings in the process. Many, but not all, line changes are retained in both the North American and European versions of Explorers of Sky.

Names#

Crystal Lake#

"Crystal Lake" was renamed in the European script to "Shining Lake", including the dungeon floor banner as well as all lines of dialogue that refer to it. Unlike most other changes, this is an actual localization difference rather than a script revision; the NA and EU versions of Explorers of Sky also use "Crystal Lake" and "Shining Lake" respectively.

Chapter 4#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

The Gatekeepers
The Sentries

The title of Chapter 4 was changed. Unusually, this change would be reverted in both the NA and EU versions of Sky.

Dialogue#

The following dialogue is organized in chronological order. Helpfully, most internal names for the scenes are already sorted chronologically, going from m01-26 (Main01-26, the main story) to s01-23 (Sub01-23, the post-game story).

Any line by the partner is split into three variants, corresponding to their personality group; these are referred to in this article as "Partner 1-3". Partner 1 is an all-male group consisting of Squirtle, Totodile and Chimchar, Partner 2 consists of every other male partner, and Partner 3 consists of Chikorita and Torchic, the female partners.

If read from the perspective of Explorers of Sky, include Meowth and Munchlax with Partner 1, Phanpy, Shinx and Riolu with Partner 2 and Vulpix, Eevee and Skitty with Partner 3.

m01a0208 (Beach)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Partner 1: How did you wind up zonked out here?
Partner 2: Do you remember how you ended
up zonked out here?
Partner 3: Do you have any idea how you
ended up zonked out here?

(I... I was zonked out?[K] What happened...?)
Partner 1: How did you wind up passed out here?
Partner 2: Do you remember how you ended
up passed out here?
Partner 3: Do you have any idea how you
ended up passed out here?

(I... I was passed out?[K] What happened...?)

"Zonked out" was changed to a more natural-sounding term. Sky would change these lines once again, this time to "unconscious".

m03a0301 (Treasure Town (West))#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

[CN][CS:N]Marill[CR] and [CS:K]Azurill[CR] bought
[CN]an [CS:I]Apple[CR] at [CS:K]Kecleon[CR] Market.
[CN][CS:N]Marill[CR] and [CS:N]Azurill[CR] bought
[CN]an [CS:I]Apple[CR] at [CS:K]Kecleon[CR] Market.

The NA script mistakenly uses the [CS:K] (light green text) control character for Azurill's name, which is customarily used for Pokémon species and locations named after said species. This was corrected using [CS:N] (light blue text), which is used to refer to specific characters.

m03a1201 (Wigglytuff's Guild B1F)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

[CN][hero]'s team received
[CN]the [CS:G]3000[CR][M:S0] bounty that was on

[CN]the head of the captured outlaw!

[CN]However...

[CN]Because [CS:G]2,700[CR][M:S0] of that
[CN]is the guild's share...

Decimal separators were added.

m03a1302 (Hero's Room)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Partner 1-3: I found you zonked out on the
beach the day after that stormy night,
[hero].

Partner 1: Do you remember why you were
zonked out on the beach?[K] Can you remember
anything at all?
Partner 2: Well? Do you remember anything
about being zonked out on the beach?[K] Can you
remember anything at all?
Partner 3: So do you remember anything
about being zonked out on the beach?[K] Can you
remember anything at all?
Partner 1-3: I found you passed out on the
beach the day after that stormy night,
[hero].

Partner 1: Do you remember why you were
passed out on the beach?[K] Can you remember
anything at all?
Partner 2: Well? Do you remember anything
about being passed out on the beach?[K] Can you
remember anything at all?
Partner 3: So do you remember anything
about being passed out on the beach?[K] Can you
remember anything at all?

"Zonked out" gets replaced once more. As with the earlier lines, this dialogue would be revised again for Sky.

m16a0401 (Wigglytuff's Guild B2F)#

Japan

NA/AU

Europe (English)

ヘイ!
エムリットたちは ぶじなのかい?

Hey, hey! Are Azelf and his
friends all right?

Hey, hey! Are Mesprit and his
friends all right?

While the Japanese line refers to Mesprit (エムリット) as well as Uxie and Azelf indirectly, the line in the NA script instead refers to Azelf as well as Uxie and Mesprit indirectly. The incomplete attempt to revert this change in the EU script led to a more significant error: Corphish now refers to Mesprit using "his", despite Mesprit consistently being referred to in feminine terms otherwise. This error would subsequently sneak its way into both the NA and EU versions of Sky as well.

m18a0101 (Future Waterfall)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Partner 1: This fountain...[K] The water's not
flowing...
Partner 2: This fountain...[K] This water isn't
flowing at all.
Partner 3: This fountain...[K] The water's not
flowing one bit...
Partner 1: This waterfall...[K] The water's not
flowing...
Partner 2: This waterfall...[K] This water isn't
flowing at all.
Partner 3: This waterfall...[K] The water's not
flowing at all...

This line referring to the static waterfall was corrected. Partner 3's line also got reworded slightly, which would be reverted in both the NA and EU scripts for Sky.

m21a0101 (Guild Entrance)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Diglett: Pokémon detected! Pokémon detected!

A line break was added.

m22a0101 (Wigglytuff's Guild B2F)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Diglett: Pokémon detected! Pokémon detected!
Diglett: Pokémon detected!

Similar treatment for another scene.

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Chatot: Yes, but I'm loathe to admit it.
Chatot: Yes, but I'm loath to admit it.

m23a0701 (Lower Brine Cave)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Partner 1: No way![K] Were you done in by a
mysterious bunch of enemies?
Partner 1: No way![K] Were you attacked by a
mysterious bunch of enemies?

Only Partner 1's line was changed, customarily replacing the phrase "done in".

m26a06e3 (Guildmaster's Chamber)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Partner 1: No stopping now, [hero]!
Partner 2: There's no giving up now,
[hero]!
Partner 3: We can't just run away now,
[hero]!
Partner 1: Let's do this right, [hero]!
Partner 2: Let's always do our best,
[hero]!
Partner 3: Let's always do our best,
[hero]!

This dialogue is used during the ending sequence and is a flashback to the moment when the hero and partner formed their exploration team at the guild. The North American script does not match the original scene, using what are likely to be earlier lines instead. This was corrected in the European script, which matches scene m02a0110 as seen in both the NA and EU scripts.

s01p1101 (Wigglytuff's Guild B2F)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

[CN]The guild sent Team [team:]

Another decimal separator.

s04p0101 (Wigglytuff's Guild B2F)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

Lopunny: The cave is located southwest of here.
Lopunny: The cave is located southeast of here.

This line was changed to correctly refer to Aegis Cave's location on the map.

s22p1501 (Post-Game Ending)#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

[CN]We have gone back to
[CN][CS:P]Luminous Cave[CR] since then...

[CN]Though we still can't evolve there.
[CN]We have gone back to
[CN][CS:P]Luminous Spring[CR] since then...

[CN]Though we still can't evolve there.

The NA script erroneously refers to Luminous Cave, which is the similar location for evolution in Rescue Team.

Miscellaneous Strings#

Croagunk: Let me give you an example.[K]

Let's say you have a [CS:Z]Shinx Claw[CR] and
a [CS:Z]Shinx Fang[CR].

Croagunk: You could swap them for
a [CS:Z]Flash Tag[CR]. Get it?

This tutorial for Croagunk's Swap Shop erroneously refers to a non-existent exclusive item, the "First Crest". This was changed to correctly refer to Shinx's 2-star exclusive item, the Flash Tag.

In-Dungeon Dialogue#

NA/AU

Europe (English)

No [kind:0] that we meet

No [kind:0] is going to

This is one of the lines in shiny Celebi's talk group, but it's not used due to the unusual way dungeon dialogue works in Deep Dusk Forest. The European version changed this line, but it remains unseen.

Unlike the mainline Pokémon games, Normal- and Fighting-type moves in Explorers still hit Ghost-type Pokémon by default, albeit with significantly reduced damage ("little effect", a step below "not very effective"). The description for this item was corrected to match.

Status Descriptions#

Playing the "biting game" was replaced with "catch-and-bite", which has about the same potential of being interpreted as an innuendo. This string would be changed again in Sky to simply "playing catch".
