This is a sub-page of Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion (Windows).

To do:

  • Add remaining unused graphics
  • Add unused animations

Misc.#

Unused title screen

Final title screen

An earlier, unused version of the game's title screen exists in the files as Logo.avf. Of note is that the game's title is written as Message in The Haunted Mansion in the unused version. Most text in the files also uses this title, suggesting it was changed during development.

RayCast1.avf is a leftover from Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned For Danger.

STU LaptopCU.avf is a leftover graphic from Stay Tuned for Danger. It was most likely used as a placeholder for Louis's laptop in the study.

Toast.avf is another STfD leftover (and in fact appears in most Nancy Drew games after it), serving as a test image.

Chinese Room#

AlarmClockArt.avf is the background for Nancy's alarm clock. While the clock is used, we never get to see it with the numbers off. There's also an identical graphic named CHI AlarmClockBkgrnd.avf, which follows the naming scheme of most of the files.

Unused

Used

The view at the start of the game, or after setting the alarm clock. The shading was touched up, and slightly more detail was added.

Unused

Used

Some slight lighting changes to the panel in front of the bed.

We normally don't see a close-up of this desk.

Unused

Used

The angle of the safe was changed.

Unused

Used

Darker shading and a vignette effect were added to the close-up of the tapestry.

Unused

Used

A barely noticeable change in the way the wall tiles to the right of the tapestry are shaded.

Unused

Used

Unused

Used

Apparently, the threat note was supposed to be opened near the desk instead of the door like it is in the final version.

Dining Room#

DIN Chandelier.avf is what looks like a very early render of an unused closeup of the chandelier in the dining room.

Unused

Used

The background for conversations with Rose. A shadow was added behind where her overlay appears, the curtain was moved and additional small changes to the scene were made.

Unused

Used

The wood staining equipment was partially changed and given new shading.

Unused

Used

The final version of the drawer added darker shadows and changed the appearance of the tray.

Unused

Used

The shading was changed and a photo was added among the drawer items.

Unused

Used

The early version of the tea set closeup doesn't even have the wall rendered.

Unused

Used

Aside from changing the size of the magazine, softening the lighting and removing an out-of-place shadow on the right edge of the screen, the file name changed the '&' character from DIN MagB&BCU.avf to an 'N', probably to avoid issues that could arise from using special characters.

Unused

Used

The door to the downstairs hallway. The unused version is missing the vignette effect from the final one and some small detail in the shading.

Hallways#

Unused

Used

Minor changes in shading and door handle placement for the door to the dining room.

Unused

Used

The shading on the saloon door was improved.

A static image of Abby. In the final game, character graphics are overlayed on top of a background.

Unused

Used

The part of the attic visible through the trapdoor was changed to be darker.

Unused

Used

The door to Abby's room, with a different angle in the final version.

The lamps in the upper hallways were changed to be brighter, along with some other minor changes in lighting. Oddly, most of the unused versions of the upper hallway graphics contain two spaces after "HAL2" in the file name.

Easter Egg#

By going to the attic after completing the phoenix slider puzzle near the end of the game & opening the chest there, a short animated graphic will appear inside the chest accompanied by a sound.

The name of this file is Connie.avf, which isn't seen in-game.

Entryway/Stairs#

ENT HouseExt.avf shows the titular mansion in daylight.

It's...nothing?

An empty version of the scroll obtained after finishing the "DIEGO" puzzle.

Unused

Used

Early version of the stair railing puzzle.

Unused

Unused

Used

Three versions of the door to the parlor exist in the files. The oldest one is missing the two lamps on the wall and appears much shinier.

Lots of earlier views of the staircase area, with the main differences being the more detailed and less blurry tapestries, the picture frames, the phoenix eyes standing out more and some more changes in the lighting. The file naming scheme was also changed from "ENT [Filename]" to "STL" for the left staircase and "STR" for the right staircase.

Parlor#

Unused

Used

The parlor walls were changed to be darker in the final version.

Unused

Used

Some details of the desk were tweaked and a phone was added.

Saloon#

An unused music piece, with the blue notes probably being the ones you would need to play on the piano, like with the "Bandit's Treasure" in the final version.

floor test_frame.avf is an early graphic of the Saloon. The area behind the counter is visibly unfinished.

This graphic of a darkened saloon goes unused, since you can't be downstairs and have the lights off at the same time.

Unused

Used

The file frame18-text.avf was, as the name suggests, used for testing and shows the same location as frame 18 of SLNX.avf. Some changes were made between it and the final version, though.

Unused

Used

frame00-bar test.avf is another "test" graphic showing the saloon, which is also different from the final version.

Unused

Used

Changes to the shading were made.

SLN Pianoart.avf and SLN PianoPUZBkgrnd.avf are the same image. The latter gets used.

Unused

Used

The camera angle and the decoration on the mirror were both changed. Also, a "Non-Alcoholic Drinks" book and several pictures on the other wall were added.

Unused

Used

Unsurprisingly, the shading for the toolbox was changed for the final version.

SLN FireplaceGrate.avf is an early close-up of the... well, fireplace grate. It looks quite different from the final version.

Unused

Used

The fireplace finally received an actual grate.

Unused

Used

The view was slightly shifted, the fireplace itself was changed and the lighting was adjusted.

Unused

Used

The fireplace is closer to the center. In the old version, the unfinished grate is still visible.

Secret Room#

Unused

Final

SEC TunnelPit.avf is an earlier version of TUN TunnelPit.avf.

Unused

Used

A view of the stairs leading down to the secret room. The room itself was changed to be much more dimly lit.

Unused

Used

The camera's position, the lighting and the brightness were changed.

Unused

Used

The final version is from another angle that shows more of the saloon.

Unused

Used

The lighting was changed, with the glass between the saloon and the room being more noticeable.

Unused

Used

The lighting and the position of Charlie's things were changed.

Unused

Used

Charlie's stuff in the secret room got an overhaul.

Unused

Used

More texture and a door handle were added to the secret door.

Unused

Used

The wall was changed to be thinner and darker shadows were added.

Unused

Used

The final version of the stairs has better shading and contrast.
