Unused Models

This is a sub-page of Mario Super Sluggers.

This game features some unused models that aren't used in-game, but still exist in the dt_na.dat file (dt.dat in the Japanese version).

Unused Models#

test_actor#

Model

Underneath Sphere01

test_actor is an unused model of a yellow stick-figure like character with a face that resembles Pikachu. It has a fully modeled skeleton underneath its model (Sphere01), likely left over from the animation exporting tool as this appears identical to 3D Studio MAX's Character Studio biped rigs.

test_actor has only one animation, which has it doing some stretches.

Daisy (Early)#

The visible bones on Daisy's early model on both the right and left hand. Only the right hand is shown.

Early

Final

An early version of Daisy's model. This model is nearly identical to the final model, even sharing the same filename (daisy.gpl), but there are a few differences.

  • The early model lacks a reflection texture, making it appear less shiny.
  • The inside of the early model has visible bones for the fingers on both hands. Similar to test_actor this was likely leftover from the animation exporting tool as the finger bones resemble the biped rigs from 3D Studio MAX's Character Studio.

The early model of Daisy also uses some slightly different textures compared to the final model's textures.

Early

Final

  • The early model's textures are less compressed than the final textures.
  • The gems on Daisy's crown, earrings, and brooch are shining in the early texture, which was removed in the final texture.
  • The early model has four eye textures, while the final texture has seven.
  • The early model lacks a separate hand texture unlike the final, so it uses the body's hand texture.

Peach's Duplicate Bat#

Unused

Used

Peach's files contain a copy of her bat being nearly identical to the one used in-game (bat.gpl). The only difference is that the copy lacks a reflection texture, making it appear less shiny.

Petey Piranha's Bat#

Petey Piranha's unused bat returns from Mario Superstar Baseball with little to no changes to the model. The only difference compared to the previous title is its filename, being renamed to bat.gpl.

Drop Spot Numbers#

A group of 2D graphics that share the name of casole, which is also the filename used for the drop-spot that appears when fielding. Given that these graphics are numbered and colored differently, it's possible these were meant to be used to indicate which player would be catching the ball in the drop spot during a multiplayer game.

casole_1#

A red number one.

casole_2#

A yellow number two.

casole_3#

A blue number three.

casole_4#

A green number four.

jirai#

Found within the object files for Wario City is an unused model of a landmine, likely scrapped in favor of the manholes that shoot out water.

p_machine#

The pitching machine leftover from Mario Superstar Baseball. The pitching machine in this game uses a new design and a different filename (pitching_machine.gpl)

barrel_bom#

The files for the Barrel Basher minigame contains an unused gray colored bomb barrel, which was most likely replaced by the Bob-ombs shot out from the barrel cannons. This is most likely the case as an unused texture of a Bob-omb decal is present within the files for this model, the same one that appears on the Bob-omb barrels from the Barrel Batter minigame in Mario Superstar Baseball.

luiji_light#

An unused model of Luigi's Flashlight. This model is located with the rest of the objects used for the Ghost K minigame, suggesting that it was planned to be used against the ghosts in the minigame.

Bowser Jr's Playroom Graffiti#

The files for the Graffiti Runner minigame contain a set of graffiti art which may have been originally used as a way to get items in the minigame, similarly to how the Bullet Bills and Chain Chomps are triggered during an exhibition game.

rakugaki_killer#

Graffiti art of a Bullet Bill, though Bullet Bills don't appear in the actual minigame.

rakugaki_kinoko#

Graffiti art of a Mushroom, Mushrooms are collected via the treasure chests in the minigame.

Unseen Model#

shadowdummy#

shadowdummy is a small flat cube with a dirt texture. This model loads in along with the rest of the objects used in the Yoshi Park map in Challenge Mode but is too small to be seen, making the purpose of this model and it's appearance in the Yoshi Park map unknown.
