Unused Models

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

To do:

  • Game/Resources/_old contains a couple of unused models to check out. It even has a slightly early version of Seedle!
  • Unused Islet could use a proper rip to match how the other models look in this page.

Unused Islands#

Early Shipshape Island#

Early

Final

Present in Game/Resources/Object/Vista is an early low-detail model of Shipshape Island. Examining the early and final low-detail models side-by-side, there are quite a few differences:

  • The overall scale of the early model is much more exaggerated than the final model, with various objects like the cannon appearing much larger than they actually are.
  • The cannon is missing a telescope at the top. Instead, there is a nest with three eggs on top of it.
  • On the starboard (right) side of the ship, the beach area in the early version had pink sand and coral, whereas the final version has regular sand and rocks in place of the coral.
    • The secluded area past the beach, on the port (left) side, is completely missing. The hidden areas to the left and right of the beach are also not present.
  • The river flows in a completely different direction in the early version: Rather than flowing towards the front of the ship, it flows down towards the beach. A bridge separates the central and back area of the ship towards the left, rather than the bridge being up north in the final version.
  • The mountainous area towards the back of the ship is missing the waterfall in the early version. Instead, there is an arch formed by various rocks. At the top of the arch are some large flowers.
  • In the early version, there is only one path towards the cannon. The player would have to go north (about where the bridge would have been in the final version) and head up a path along the port side of the ship that remains relatively unchanged compared to the final version.
    • Beneath the path in the early version, there are three arches not present in the final version.
    • Along the path, a large root of the Uni-Tree arches over the path.
    • There is a defined platform just past the arch, which is not seen in the final game. It is unknown what this would have been for.
  • The other path towards the cannon in the early version is instead replaced by a waterfall.
  • The Uni-Tree's shape is slightly different in the early version.
    • The Uni-Tree's roots grew mostly above ground in the early version, whereas in the final version the roots grew underground and protrude out of several areas near the bottom of Shipshape Island.
    • The bulb at the top of the Uni-Tree is missing.

Unused Islet#

Present in Game\Resources\Field\Object is a small, simplistic island with sand and palm trees. The kanji written on the center mountain translates to "small island".

Wayaway Island Placeholder#

Present in Game\Resources\Field\_Common_SeaArea_04\Vista. This would be meant to be seen by the player from Shipshape Island when looking through the telescope or looking back towards the linked islands. However, since this island is never seen by the telescope (it is accessed only through a pipe) and never gets linked (it was already an island to begin with before the game's events), this model would not be able to be seen by the player normally.

Unused Items and Objects#

There are several unused models contained in Game\Resources\Field\_Common\Item.

Super Star#

A model of a Super Star. Super Stars have appeared in other Mario RPGs as items that grant temporary invincibility outside of battle in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the Paper Mario games Sticker Star, Color Splash, and The Origami King, so it is possible that this unused Super Star could have functioned in a similar way.

Various Unused Models#

Glohm Burnadette#

An unused model of Burnadette inflicted with Glohm, implying that it was once planned to have Burnadette succumb to the condition as well or in another story path. Only Chilliam would end up getting inflicted with Glohm in the final game.

Default Map Cube#

Found in Vermillion\Content is a cube model covered in a red, white, grey-blue, and green grid texture. The filename for it is DefaultMap.umap, suggesting it may be a leftover from the Unreal Engine.

Test Battle Background#

In Game\Resources\Field\Terrain there's a white floor that has black, red, and blue lines. This was used to test battles and boss fights to make sure they're fully functional.

Unused & Early Objects (WhiteBox)#

In Game\Resources exists a mysterious directory called WhiteBox, which is filled with a bunch of leftover material from what could be implied as a debug area or an early island. It contains early elements from various islands. There are a lot of objects in this directory.
