Unused Trainer Track#
Track ID 0x0E is an unused track called Trainer. The track consists of many obstacles that allow you to practice the various game mechanics. Unlike other tracks, this one has no time limit or AI opponents. One notable issue this track has, is that the respawn mechanic can place you out of bounds if activated in some places.
Interestingly, the back of the game's case lists the game as having "14 vividly rendered tracks". While there are 14 tracks in the game, only 13 of them are normally accessible with the 14th one being Trainer. This track was placed on the selection screen in the July 16th, 1999 and July 28th, 1999 prototypes within the Easy category, being removed from the menu code in the final. With the first final build being compiled on August 15th, 1999, it's safe to say this track's removal was extremely late.
The graphics for this track, present across the disc.
The announcer voice clip for this track, found in WRAP.KAT.
The following Codebreaker code will overwrite whatever track you select with Trainer:
US v1.002 (blue disc): 0024B0C4 0000000E
US v1.020 (orange disc) and EU v1.009: 00242AC8 0000000E
Unused Graphics#
Unused Menu Graphics#
Found in TRCKSEL.R2. This name was used for Catacomb in the June 1999 prototype.
An unused backing graphic for the Easy difficulty, found in HYDRODC.R2. This isn't used in any known build of the game.
|
|
This needs some investigation. |
Early main menu icons, found in LOO1.R2. The layout of the icons is different, the background color is different, it's in pixel format instead of PVR format, and some of the icons themselves look a bit odd, to say the least.
|
Early |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Unused text graphics found in HYDRODC.R2. In the final, the ones in the left graphic are represented with icons instead. The right graphic contains "CAMERA IN" and "CAMERA OUT", which can be seen in the July 16th, 1999 prototype. The text graphics for the controller config are baked into the larger graphics, leaving these unused.
NinjaX Demonstration#
Graphics from the NinjaX tech demo can be found in ARCT.R2. Some are partially corrupted.
Unknown Graphics#
|
|
To do:
|
A graphic found in pixel format inside ARCT.R2. Origins currently unknown.
Unused Sounds#
An unused copy of Greek Isles' music can be found in GREE.KAT. The game's music is stored as CD audio, so this isn't needed. The ones stored here are noticeably lower quality, too. This is the only track sound bank to have it's music inside.
The main theme.
The second part, used during the final stretch to the finish.
Windows Executable Fragments#
|
|
To do:
|
Scattered throughout ARTATT1.R2 are several Windows executables fragmented in varying amounts, found by their header followed with x86 code. The ones with visible text strings seem to be related to Hitachi SH Series tools.
Menu Error Handler#
The game will throw an error message if there is a problem with loading textures related to the selection screens. Interestingly, the text for it is scaled so large it goes way off the screen. The full message reads: "ERROR LOADING SELECTION TEXTURES". The graphics for this message get overwritten in the boat and track select screens, so if tripped there, it will appear corrupted.
This error message can be seen upon pressing start at the title screen with Codebreaker code 0029AEB0 00000000 (US v1.002)
Unused Text#
- Text strings for the boats show different names for Blowfish, Chumdinger, and Armed Response than what is normally seen in-game. They are Hovercraft, Sea Dog, and MP Boat, respectively, seen beginning at 0xB3010 in 1ST_READ.BIN(v1.002). Some of the debugging text present in the executable uses these names.
Developer Messages#
A developer message that can be found in all versions of the game is present at 0xBAC8C in 1ST_READ.BIN and as part of the header to every R2 file on the disc. This message can also be found in the arcade version, used in the same way.
James Cameron Rules
Another message can be found near the beginning of those R2 files, directly below the previous message. Not only that, it's present in many other places throughout the disc, including next to asset names. How many times? 288,302. That means over 2MB of the total disc space is taken up by this message. A very frequent occurrance of hidden messages indeed.
fuck you
This hidden message was added in the Dreamcast version, so whoever at Eurocom made it appear this many times throughout the disc was probably not happy with something.
Unused Track Names#
Present at 0xB930C in 1ST_READ.BIN.

Regional Differences#
The EU version, designated v1.009, is almost the same as US v1.020, to the point where the executable is byte for byte identical between the two. Despite this, IP.BIN is not flagged to support VGA mode in the EU version, while it is in US v1.020.
Revisional Differences#
- v1.020 takes considerably longer to save than v1.002, despite writing the same amount of data.
- v1.020, or the "HOT! NEW!" version that came on an orange disc instead of blue, added support for VGA mode. v1.002 cannot run in VGA mode, even when forced to.
- Entering ?PB to unlock everything does not work in v1.002, while it does in 1.020.
The Sega Dreamcast logo at the title screen was removed in v1.020. The trademark and rights reserved symbols were made brighter.
