Arcade Leftovers

A lot of stuff from the arcade version remains on the disc unused. Including assets that went unused in that version.

Test Track Leftovers#

The test track is mentioned in 1ST_READ.BIN, within the internal track list(at 0xBC714 in v1.002) and in a list of other track files, as test.r2(at 0xBAD78 in v1.002). However, this file is not found on the disc in either version, so the game will crash upon attempting to load the slot it's meant to occupy, 0x09. It's not found in any of the prototypes, either. Despite the lack of said file, the world data for the track, named HLTLOSATRH0, can be found in HYDRODC.R2. The R2 entry is located at 0x223450, and the world data itself begins at 0x3EF6000. Attempting to modify a world data pointer in the internal track list to load it results in a game crash, however.

The loading graphic is also present in HYDRODC.R2, which despite not being used, was converted to PVR format and resized to 512x512, from the original arcade's 512x400.

Graphics#

Many of the graphics in this section are duplicated multiple times throughout the files on the disc.

Used in the Arcade version#

Was seen in the track/boat select, as part of showing how to select tracks/boats.

Was seen in the boat select after disabling the CPU opponents.

Was seen in the boat select after disabling the CPU catchup mechanic.

Was used as the difficulty setting for Thunder Park.

Was used as the difficulty setting for Venice Canals and Nile Adventure.

Was seen in the high scores screen when you won a race.

Was seen during the attract mode. Stored in pixel format inside HYDRODC.R2.

Was seen during a linked game, if you completed your selections before the other players.

This would appear during the high scores screen, in the last few seconds of the countdown that would boot you out of the current session if it ran out.

In the arcade version, depending on operator settings, Nile Adventure and New York Disaster were locked behind this mechanic. You had to play a set number of races on the same session to unlock them.

The markers to indicate players were behind you in a linked game.

Unused in the Arcade version#

This didn't have so many 6s in the arcade version. Did someone at Eurocom do this?

This graphic gets hearts with smiley faces.

This top-down map is unique as it's the only one that's been found in this style. Looks to be Hydro Speedway with a couple of sides missing.

This one has some parts missing compared to the original version on arcade. Namely, most of the MPH variant of the speedometer is gone, as well as a portion of the boost meter bar. A completely intact version can be found in pixel format within AIBOATS1.R2.

This collection of graphics found in pixel format within HYDRODC.R2, was seen in the AMOA Distributor video from 1998, which showcased a trailer depicting an early build of the arcade version.

Interestingly, the markers used in linked games go up to 8, despite the arcade version only being known to support up to 4 players at once.

Sounds#

Used in the Arcade version#

The engine sounds heard during loading screens are contained in COMM.KAT. However, the Dreamcast port is completely silent while loading, leaving these unused.

The sound heard when you insert a coin into the machine is also inside COMM.KAT.

This voice clip played during the high scores screen, when you either had won a free race or had a credit in the machine. Found in WRAP.KAT

Unused in the Arcade version#

Found in GAME.KAT, a bunch of unused voice clips.

Use Codebreaker code 00209079 00000004 (US v1.002) to display a time expired message that was used in linked games.

Use Codebreaker code 0020907A 00000002 (US v1.002) to enable a message scrolling onto the screen at the start of a race encouraging players to get 1st place to win a free game.

Use Codebreaker code 0020907A 00000004 (US v1.002) to display a message telling players they won a free game. It still grows and shrinks like in the arcade version.
