Frogger (Arcade)

The universe abhors a frog.

To do:

  • The Arcade Archives release changed/replaced the main theme due to copyright issues.

Unused Music#

In-Game

Fixed

It's impossible to hear the main theme (taken from the 1977 anime Araiguma Rascal) in full in normal play; the most the player ever gets to hear is about 32 seconds into the track, leaving the last 8 seconds of the track out.

Even then, there's a mistake in the track that accidentally mutes the second voice channel about 25 seconds in. Put the following code in MAME's frogger.xml cheat file (or in any of the derivative sets) to fix that channel.

  <cheat desc="Patch Main Theme">
    <script state="run">
      <action>audiocpu.mb@1134=CF</action>
    </script>
    <script state="off">
      <action>audiocpu.mb@1134=DF</action>
    </script>
  </cheat>

Unused Graphics#

FroggerArc100.png
An unused "100" bonus graphic. It's possible that either gobbling the fly or taking one of the pink frogs home originally gave 100 points, but in the final game, both give 200 points.

Version Differences#

There are four different Frogger sets in MAME. They seem to follow the chronology below:

Konami
MAME: frogger

Sega (Set 1)
MAME: froggers1

Sega (Set 3)
MAME: froggers3

Sega (Set 2)
MAME: froggers2

Original

  • frogger is the original Konami set.
  • froggers1 is the first Sega set to be released. It's almost identical code-wise to frogger, except for the copyright string.
  • froggers3 is the second Sega set to be released. Identical to froggers1, except for different scoring values.
  • froggers2 is the third and last Sega set to be released. This version expands the game's description in the title screen and it retains the original scoring values.

Rules#

Konami

Sega (Older)
MAME: Set 1

Sega (Old)
MAME: Set 3

Sega (New)
MAME: Set 2

This is an awful lot of text for a 1981 arcade gameDon't drop the beat

Both Sega sets correct "FIYE HOMES" to "FIVE HOMES" in the point table.

Also, the newer Sega set replaces the old screen with a detailed description of the game, and adds an additional screen with a more thorough point table.

Scoring#

Scoring is slightly different in the old Sega set: Each forward hop is worth 50 points instead of 10, meaning the maximum points per home is 500, and each frog safely put in a home is worth 100 points instead of 50.
