Deadly Premonition

Deadly Premonition follows FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan as he finds himself in the rural town of Greenvale after a brutal murder shocks its residents. What follows is an adventure full of twists, turns, and a memorable cast of peculiar characters.

Isn't that right, Zach?

To do:

  • A more in-depth look at the changes made between the original and the Director's Cut. Some textures were accidentally changed to older ones still referring to Rainy Woods instead of Greenvale.
  • Recently shared dev footage of several cutscenes from when the game was still Rainy Woods by a designer who worked on the trailers.

Unused Models#

Censored Scenes#

Originally, the blurry images that York was able to see when investigation the otherworld sections were meant to be full scenes that played in-game, but eventually got censored. However, models used for those scenes are still present in the files. DeadlyPremonitionUnusedAnnaModel.png DeadlyPremonitionUnusedBeckyModel.png

Furthermore, a model depicting a tongue being hung on a wire was also found. It was revealed recently that it was meant to be used in the original version of a scene that was also censored due to being too brutal. DeadlyPremonitionUnusedTongueModel.png

There was also an unused model of a severed head of a dog, which was likely the original version of the dead dog York finds during the first level. The model matches York's reaction, as he's shocked to see such a mutilated courpse. DeadlyPremonitionUnusedDogHead.png

Unused Items#

Sedative

Presumably a stronger version of the Stabilizer. It is possible to visit Ushah at the hospital for a stronger dose, which may have replaced this item.

Texture

Cigarette (Feather) and Cigarette (Middle)

Only the Heavy cigarettes are available. The second game would have different kinds of cigarettes that pass time at different speeds, so these may have had a similar function.

The "shadow" versions of Keith Ingram and General Lysander show minor discrepancies when compared to their normal forms. While not unused, these details are difficult to spot during gameplay. The patch on Keith's jacket is entirely different and Lysander's sergeant patch wasn't sloppily sown on.

Leftovers from when the game was still known as Rainy Woods.

Another unused pack of cigarettes. Judging by the filename "YANG", they were most likely meant for David Young. DeadlyPremonition360_YANG.png

While not unused, the following details are next to impossible to spot during actual gameplay.

The nametags on both Fiona and Ushah's "Shadow" textures still say Rainy Woods Hospital on them.

The badges on one of Emily's textures still say Rainy Woods. DeadlyPremonition360_EmilyRW.png

Unused Audio#

Cut from a post episode summary, York describing the second victims more gruesome fate. According to interviews, this scene in particular was toned down as it was seen as too extreme.

York: "Becky was hung up in her bathroom with wires. The wires were rigged to tear out her insides when the wires were cut. Cause of death was most likely shock from loss of blood."

A cut line from York's conversation about The Ramones with Zach, listing the years the members of the group passed away.

York: "Joey in 2000... Dee-Dee in 2002... and Johnny in 2004."

Rainy Woods Leftovers#

A clip of York introducing the previous episode summary using the game's original name.

DeadlyPremonitionDC_RW-PreviouslyIn.ogx

York: "Previously on Rainy Woods."

Several clips of the Ingram twins, from when they were still portrayed as small adults instead of angelic children.

Ingram: "Are you thirsty?"

Ingram: "You only take milk with your coffee."

Ingram: "After your throat is quenched... you must do what you must do."

Ingram: "You're waiting here for someone, aren't you?"

Ingram: "You'll also be able to return back soon."

Ingram: "Red tree... Red tree..."

Ingram: (echoing, with filters applied) "Red tree... Red tree... Red tree..."

Ingram: (echoing) "Red tree... Red tree... Red tree..."

A few clips of the main character's father calling out to David Young Henning's alter ego, Jeter.

Father: (echoing) "Okay Jeter?"

Father: (echoing, repeated) "Jeter..."

Father: (echoing, repeated) "Jeter... Henning..."

Unused Music#

A rendition of Ride of the Valkyries, which doesn't appear in the game.

(Source: Welcome to Greenvale - A Deadly Premonition fansite)

One track in the game is highly unusual in that it contains six sound channels, which is something otherwise only reserved for the game's cutscenes. The channels in this track aren't even intended to play together, instead being a collection of unused music stuffed into a single place. This track is number 14, which places it right after the Miss Stiletto Heels tracks and just before Amazing Grace in the game's BGM archive, making its original intent to be another lyrical song. Its label, however, is "bgm99", which implies it was intentionally set to the side at a later date. The rest of the BGM files only go up to "bgm41".

Channel 1 is a version of the Raincoat Killer's chase theme without the main melodies. It is very out of place compared to the rest of the channels in this track, and it ends much sooner since this song is intended to loop.

Channel 2 is the song that's sung by Carol in the Rainy Woods trailer, which would be replaced by Miss Stiletto Heels in the final game.

Channel 3 is a copy with only the vocals.

Channel 4 is completely empty.

Channel 5 is a piano-only mix of the song. It starts and ends at slightly different times than the piano backing in channel 2 and has different composition in places, so it's not just an isolated track. Miss Stiletto Heels also has a piano mix version, so this was likely an equivalent.

Channel 6 is another song that is unique to the Rainy Woods trailer, this one featuring a lot more crazy sax than what could be heard before.

Disabled Fast Travel Slots#

The code for the Walkie Talkie item which grants fast travel creates multiple null entries that get skipped over, suggesting the list was longer at one point.

Unused Strings#

Various unused strings exist, with a surprising amount of empty entries.

Drunk Status#

Strings exist that reference a cut drunk state, which wouldn't be a thing until the sequel. In the final game the various available alcoholic drinks you can buy just restore sleep.

Unlockables#

Also present in the strings are unlock messages for game modifiers located around unused description strings for the "Special" menu. There does not appear to be any code present for them. It is easily possible that these were going to be repurposed debug cheats.

Regional Differences#

The original release of Deadly Premonition was released in Japan and Korea as Red Seeds Profile. When the Director's Cut was released in Japan on the PlayStation 3, it was called Deadly Premonition: Red Seeds Profile Complete Edition. When the game was ported to the Switch, the "Red Seeds Profile" name was abandoned entirely.

Version Differences#

To do:
Supposedly all but the original Xbox 360 version are quite glitchy

The game has had three different releases:

  • The original Deadly Premonition, released on Xbox 360 worldwide and on the PlayStation 3 exclusively in Japan and Korea.
  • Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut, released on PlayStation 3 and Windows.
  • Deadly Premonition Origins, released on Switch.

The Director's Cut#

  • Revamped controls, replacing the over-the-shoulder tank controls of the original.
  • Extra cinematics throughout the game, framing the game as the elderly main character recalling the events of the game as a story to his granddaughter.
  • Various changes to the graphics, including textures, UI elements, and effects.
  • DLC in the form of extra suits for York, skins for Emily and the Raincoat Killer, additional cars, and the ability to purchase a house in Greenvale. These were paid content on PS3, but included with the base game on Windows.
  • The PS3 version included support for PlayStation MOVE and Stereoscopic 3D.
  • Exclusive to the Windows version is a set of Halloween-themed outfits: the "Pumpkin" suit for York, the "Devil Girl" costume for Emily, and the grey "Halloween" skin for the Raincoat Killer.

Origins#

Based on Director's Cut, but without the extra story scenes, DLC, or additional control methods.
