This is a sub-page of Proto:World of Goo.

Preview v1.17 is a build of World of Goo released to people who pre-ordered on February 14th 2008, around 8 months before release.

Download World of Goo (Preview v1.17).

Paste the magic key in here#

Lock screen that appears after the loading.

Because this game is a preview and not a final version, it contains a lock screen that lets authorized testers access the game. They would receive a special key from the developers that could be pasted into the input field. The game would then connect to the 2D BOY's server to validate the key and let the tester through.

With no available keys to use, you can't access the preview. If you want to bypass this nowadays, you need to replace the WorldOfGoo.exe with its patched version.

Gameplay Differences#

Progressing through the game#

This version lets you access all 12 levels from Chapter 1.

Level Name (In order)

Differences

Going Up

Small Divide

Requires only 4 balls to be collected, instead of 8 in the final version.

Hang Low

Impale Sticky

Requires only 16 balls to be collected, instead of 26 in the final version. You can also build through geometry, which means you can skip most of the level.

Flying Machine (Upper Path)

Fisty's Bog (Upper Path)

Tower of Goo (Upper Path)

Requires only 6 balls to be collected, instead of 20 in the final version.

Ivy Towers (Lower Path)

Tumbler (Lower Path)

Chain (Lower Path)

Requires only 10 balls to be collected, instead of 15 in the final version. This means you can skip getting any of the common gooballs and beat the level.

Ode to the Bridge Builder

Requires only 6 balls to be collected, instead of 8 in the final version.

Regurgitation Pumping Station

The menu button is hidden while playing the level.

Ball Goal#

After completing a level, the amount of balls you collected will become the new goal for that level.

World of Goo Corporation#

  • The camera is bound to the area where the structure is, instead of all the gooballs.
  • Detaching all your gooballs so that there is no structure will set your height to 34028235931503 meters.
  • The force caused by the nuke button is significantly larger.

Other changes:#

  • When Gooballs are woken up, a triple exclamation mark pops up, instead of the final version's one exclamation mark.
  • No number pops up near the pipe upon the gooballs entering it.
  • The "earthquake" effect (impact shake) is different - It moves both horizontal and vertical instead of just vertical.
  • Instead of the custom cursor in the final game, the game uses the SDL default cursor.

Unused Movies#

levelinfotransition_maincontinue#

levelinfotransition_maincontinue previewed by overwriting 2dboyLogo

Clone of levelinfotransition_main, but with some text that says 'click to continue'. This text is actually present in the original movie, as well as the "in and out" transition movies, however they have 0 alpha and are positioned at the origin. This shows that at some point in time, you would have to interact on the transition screen for the level to play, instead of it happening automatically.

credits#

Identical to levelinfotransition_maincontinue.

wogcdestroy#

Identical to 2dboyLogo.

Text Differences#

Preview and Final Comparison#

Preview and Final version share a lot of text IDs, but only a few of them are different from each version. In most cases, the difference is that in the Preview version, Sign Painter's signature is not capitalized. (Additional changes will be pointed out, if there's any)

Its opening looked warm and inviting...
The Goo Balls seemed to wonder where it might lead.

This cave looks like it's been undisturbed for thousands of years...
Until now!
When the pipe broke through the ceiling above, the sunlight must have blinded these rare Albino GooBalls.
They didn't seem to notice when it began to snow.
Maybe they would wake up if they had something to jump onto.

If a Goo Ball falls into a well 10 meters deep...
and climbs up 3 meters each day...
but slides down 2 meters at night...
will he still look fabulous in the morning?
...maybe if he were to brace against the walls as hard as he could, and believe in the power of friction...
...he could leave the ground behind...

The last of the Goo Balls didn't seem to know that they were extremely delicious
or about the nature of the smelly pit in which they found themselves.
They said something about this being the last level of the first chapter...
...whatever that means.
Uhh.. they also said something about this area being extremely unstable and experimental...
...it might crash, but if you can make it to the end, it will all be worth it

New Texts#

As you complete levels, the EXTRA Goo Balls you collect are sent here.
How nice to see them again!
...though they seem to have lost their essence.
This must be World of Goo Corporation's sleek new campus 2.0!
They say employees are given free cereal, and they ride to meetings on scooters.
World of Goo Corporation executives say this area is infinite in all directions.
And if you look hard, you can see other people here too, building towers off in the distance.
Strange, everyone just wants to build UP. What's up there anyway?
