Gameplay Differences#

Progressing through the game#

This version lets you access only 8 levels.

Level Name (In order)

Differences

Chapter 1

Going Up

This level has an OCD, even though they are not implemented. For this one, the OCD requirement is 11 balls. (So like in final version)

Small Divide

This level has an OCD, even though they are not implemented. For this one, the OCD requirement is 30 seconds. (Final version's OCD requires 16 balls)

Hang Low

Impale Sticky

Requires only 16 balls to be collected, instead of 26 in the final version.

Flying Machine (Upper Path)

Completing this level kicks you to the World Selection screen and unlocks Chapter 2.

Ivy Towers (Lower Path)

Chapter 2

Drool

Requires only 6 balls to be collected, instead of 10 in the final version. It also lacks any timebugs, which is not the case in the final version.

Fly Away Little Ones

Lacks any timebugs, which is not the case in the final version.

Other changes:#

  • Asleep gooballs will sometimes automatically jump towards the structure before it wakes up.
  • Gooballs make noises, as if you hovered over them, during the parts, where you're not playing (level introduction, EOL screen).

Visual Differences#

Intro#

The only text visible in the starting movie.

When you start the game, the 'madeBy' movie will show before the 2DBOY logo, saying hello to the beta tester. The text used (MOVIE_MADEBY_1) is overwritten in the final game to have "independent monocle seal of approval" as the text instead, however it is unknown why.

Pause Menu#

Although the OCD button is present, it's non-functional, as OCDs had not been implemented yet at the time of creating this beta.

Cutscene Differences#

The cutscene "wogcunlock" (that appears after completing the "Hang Low" level) is slightly different between this beta and the final version. In the beta, customers have more linear movement instead of the final version's more frame-to-frame walking.

Unused Images#

World Backgrounds#

These backgrounds are alternatives to the MapWorldView background (res/levels/MapWorldView/bg_1). There are also six SceneLayers in the scene file for MapWorldView (one for each chapter), suggesting that these backgrounds would match the latest chapter unlocked.

Miscellaneous#

res/images/islandicon_5.png
(No ID)
Icon used for the chapter 5 level transition, however is never seen as there are no chapter 5 levels in the beta.
WorldOfGoo_Beta2a_Island_Icon_5.png

res/images/islandicon_wogcd.png
IMAGE_GLOBAL_WOGC_D_ICON
Icon used for the destroyed World of Goo Corporation transition, which does not exist in the beta. Image is a duplicate of res/images/islandicon_wogc.png (IMAGE_GLOBAL_WOGC_ICON)
WorldOfGoo_Beta2a_Island_Icon_WOGCD.png

res/images/levelimages/World1_undergroundbg.png
(No ID)
Originally from the prototypes (rev600/rev821) for the first island map.

Audio Differences#

Whistle#

The whistle, although normally unobtainable in this version without the use of the debug mode, has implemented sounds, which are completely different from the ones used in the final version. It's possible thought, that the final sounds might have been "remixed" from those early sounds.

Text Differences#

Beta and Final Comparison#

Beta and Final version share a lot of text IDs, but only a few of them are different from each version. Most of it are minor fixes and changes, but some were originally something completely different.

Note: "(no text)" means, that the ID exists in the file, but no actual text is present with it.

Hey look!
Something's missing...
Whatever it is, the sky way up there is filled with dust and debris from a giant explosion.
Visibility is low.
The Goo Balls will have to go even higher if they want to see very far.
I wonder if we can still buy delicious drinks?
Watching them build that tower makes me thirsty.
Almost all the Goo Balls in the world have come here...

A horrible new species of Goo Ball! It's the most vile of all...
They are extremely rare, and as a result, have become quite lonely.
I think I read online somewhere that when they attach to other Goo Balls,
they shoot out dozens of 'love spikes' that grab onto almost any surface.
And won't let go.
The other Goo Balls try to avoid eye contact.
