Level Differences

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Proto:SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge (PlayStation)/SBSP 020501.

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

In this prototype, the levels are shown by numbers, instead of showing their names as in the final game (For example, Bikini Bottom and Jelly Fields are shown as Chapter 1 and Level 1).

SBSP_020501

SBSP_040601

General#

  • There are much less golden spatulas throughout the entire game.
  • There are no checkpoints.

Chapter 1: Bikini Bottom#

Jelly Fields#

  • The player starts next to Squidward, instead of starting next to the bus.
  • The bus has collision at the top.
  • There's a lot of decoration missing, especially the flower clouds in the background.
  • Squidward uses a different design, showing a pre-rendered 3D model animating rather than a 2D sprite in the style of the show.

  • When talking to Squidward, it appears to play a dialogue test using early versions of two lines from the final game.

Ahhh, ere we are at Bikini Bottom.. and today we will be following my favourite creature Spongebob SquarePants on his adventures around Bikini Bottom in his search for the Best Birthday Present ever for his best friend in the whole of Bikini Bottom, Patrick Star.

Ahhh, 'ere we are at Bikini Bottom... and today we will be following my favorite creature SpongeBob SquarePants on his adventures around Bikini Bottom.
Today he is in search of the Best Birthday Present ever, for his best friend Patrick. The question is how far will he go for his best friend?

An early version of the opening cutscene text.

Sandy

Hold on there little square dude if you want to defend yourself you need to do this!!!!

Hai yah!
Excellent! You'll be able to use this move on most of the enemies you encounter, as well as special objects.

A line for Sandy telling you to use the karate chop. In the final game, it's only present in the level Desert Wasteland.

SpongeBob

Did that make sense..?

N/A

A scrapped line intended to be used after tutorial dialogue? It shows a Yes/No prompt, and pressing "No" repeats the dialogue.

  • The jellyfish have different designs, being pre-rendered 3D instead of 2D.
  • There are some golden spatulas hanging on balloons early into the level that were either changed to regular golden spatulas or removed entirely in the final.
  • The hermit crabs have different designs, being pre-rendered 3D instead of 2D.
  • The floating jellyfish model is seen at a different angle and is not transparent.
  • A health pickup is present below an area that requires you to float on the jellyfish platforms. In the final, this was replaced by a plethora of golden spatulas.

Sandy's Tree Dome#

  • The ground is yellow instead of gray.

Prototype

Final

  • Sandy is not present.
  • The doors leading into the treedome are not open.
  • The water mechanic is not present, though the buckets are present.
  • The water buckets are wooden instead of metal.
  • The butterflies are not present.
  • There are no acorns present.
  • The tree twigs are placed at the end of certain platforms rather than on them, making them much harder to jump on. You also have to ground pound on them twice rather than just jump on them.
  • The collision is rather buggy.
  • A health pickup, which was removed in the final, is present next to one of the water buckets.
  • When inside the tree, the background is broken as it is placed too low.
  • There are no barrels inside.

Fish Hooks Park#

  • There's a spike generator inside a rock. The spike generators also have different designs, though they are actually still pre-rendered 3D in the final.
  • The bridge at the beginning of the level uses a different design.
  • The clams are pre-rendered 3D and immediately start opening their mouth as you go close to them.
  • There's an impossible jump at one point, which requires using debug noclip.
  • The fish hooks have no string, which makes them appear to float. They also have buggy collision.
  • The spikes later in the level do not kill you. They also appear to have different designs.
  • A health pickup, removed in the final, is present next to an area featuring a fish hook and a spike.

Downtown Bikini Bottom#

  • There are a few golden spatulas hanging on balloons throughout the level, which were either changed to regular golden spatulas or removed entirely.
  • Several enemies are not present.
  • The flying spike-looking fishes were originally red, and were pre-rendered 3D instead of 2D. These designs were used in the GBA version.
  • The cars are not present.
  • There is a collectable pair of glasses on top of a building, which does nothing.
  • Another removed health pickup is present, being on top of the locked-up building.
  • There's a spike generator next to a death pit, which was removed in the final.
  • The Mother Jellyfish boss is not present. As a result, the level is very short.

Chapter 2: To the Center of the Earth#

Cavernous Canyons#

  • The ground in the level is red instead of blue.
  • Mr. Krabs is not present.
  • A health pickup is present very early into the level, soon after where Mr. Krabs in the final. Instead of being removed, it was replaced by a 1-up.
  • A jellyfish platform is not present.
  • It's very easy to fall below the map as there are no death pits at all.
  • The coral blower, rather than being next to Mr. Krabs, is present on top of a platform early into the level.
    • Speaking of the coral blower, it's practically useless in this prototype! It can't suck up coral (which is its whole purpose in both the episode it's referencing, Reef Blower, and the final game) due to the fact that there is no coral in the first place, which means that the walls you shoot the coral at are not present either, AND it lowers your jump height phenomenally. It's obvious why this was changed.
  • There are a few spiders (seen in the final in Desert Wasteland) present in the level, which have broken flickering sprites.
  • Most of the enemies were changed in this level.
  • The puzzle sequence with Gary is not present, instead you just traverse through the level as normal.
  • The Thwomp-like crushers have broken flickering sprites.
  • The level design becomes unrecognizable after some time and very, very different.

Thermal Tunnels#

  • The entire level layout was flipped in the final.
  • Patrick is not present.
  • The bubble generators don't actually spawn bubbles, making the level impossible without debug noclip.
  • A few areas where the coral blower is don't have the coral blowers.
  • Many health pickups are present, which were mostly removed.
  • The blocks you ground pound on are not present.

Acrid Air Pockets#

  • This level does not exist yet. Instead, it shows a level entirely consisting of screen artifacts, with the level's music playing in the background. The only way to get out is by pressing R2 to skip a level.

Lava Fields#

  • This level does not exist either.

Chapter 3: Bikini Bottom Prehistoric Times#

Precipice Canyon#

  • The walls you ground pound on are not present.
  • The jellyfish cannon is present at the beginning of the level. It was moved to Desert Wasteland and Kelpazoic Jungle in the final, and here, it was replaced by the balloon.
  • The time machine at the beginning is at the left instead of the right.
  • A spike generator is mysteriously present inside a wall.
  • A bunch of bubble platforms are not present.
  • The area soon after where the first checkpoint is in the final has two jellyfish platforms instead of one.
  • Shortly after, there's a health pickup that was replaced by the balloon
  • Mr. Krabs and the squeaky boots are not present.
  • There's a clam shortly after where the squeaky boots are in the final.
  • Again, the bubble generators don't generate bubbles.
  • To the left of the first bubble generator is a health pickup that was replaced by a background detail.

Desert Wasteland#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Does the level continue after the level end trigger?

  • There's a coral blower at the beginning of the level. In the final, it was replaced by Sandy and the karate chop.
  • The sky of the level is bleaker, almost like a desert wasteland.
  • The coral in the background is pink instead of green.
  • The poison water was originally brown like sand instead of green like poison. Wow, these early colors make the art direction of the level much truer to its name.
  • The spiders are present again, now with the correct colors.
  • Another jellyfish cannon is present, which was moved over to the right of the platform it was originally on.
  • There are no jellyfish canisters.
  • Right at the point where the first checkpoint is, there's a level end trigger. It's likely that the level does continue on from here, however.

Kelpazoic Jungle#

  • The sky was changed from being a pink background to the same one as Desert Wasteland.
  • The background details were originally completely different and smaller.
  • A bubble platform was added in the final at the beginning.
  • The bubble wand is not featured early on. Instead, there's just working (though not indicated by the level geometry) bubble generators with buggy collision. Speaking of the bubbles, they're pre-rendered 3D rather than the show style.
  • A jellyfish cannon was moved over to make way for a jellyfish canister.
  • The jellyfish cannon here also spawns a bubble generator. Very odd.
  • After more places which feature bubble generators rather than platforms, there's finally a bubble wand and a bubble canister! Except, they were removed from this area in the final, and here, they're right next to yet another bubble generator, which actually is in the final.
  • The bubble wand spawns pre-rendered 3D bubbles, but however, they actually have not buggy collision.
  • Mysteriously, there's a jellyfishing net shortly after the area with the bubble wand.
  • There happens to also be a pair of glasses which does nothing.
  • In place of a log raft, there's YET ANOTHER BUBBLE GENERATOR!
  • Here, the Thwomp-like crushers can be seen again, this time with correct colors.
  • Another bubble wand is finally seen again...right next to ANOTHER BUBBLE GENERATOR. What is it with this level and bubble generators? How come they weren't in Thermal Tunnels and Precipice Canyon where the level actually needed them?
  • The water stream area has a broken leaf raft that does nothing. Hey, at least there isn't a bubble generator this time!
  • The Venus flytrap platforms were originally pink (sound familiar?) instead of blue like the other platforms.
  • In place of a jellyfish platform, there's...a flying leaf generator? What were they even doing?
  • To the left of where the last checkpoint is in the final, there's a (very out of place) eyeball enemy which shoots out spikes. It's even more obvious why this didn't make the cut.
  • Right next to the eyeball enemy, there are three leaf platforms, one with a health pickup. The third leaf, which had the health pickup on it, was removed in the final, while the health pickup itself was replaced by a golden spatula.
  • After where the last checkpoint is in the final, an area that requires the bubble wand has missing bubble platforms as well as a general missing platform.
  • Where a bubble generator resides in the final, there is nothing in the prototype. Whew, seems Climax's bubble generator phase is over!
  • Even more missing bubble platforms reside where you would have had to use the bubble wand.
  • ...and we spoke too soon, as the bubble generators finally return, though in an area where they are in the final. To the right of it, there's a removed health pickup, and right at the area of the bubble generator, there's a very poorly placed Thwomp-like crusher.
  • At the end, we finally make it to the whale, but there's no level end trigger.

Inside the Whale#

  • The level's textures were originally red instead of purple.

Prototype

Final

  • Even more eyeball enemies can be found here.
  • A secret area appears to not be present.
  • The teeth you jump on were originally larger.
  • The worm enemies are not present.
  • Right where the first checkpoint is in the final, there's a removed health pickup.
  • There was originally a longer parkour section before you jump into the area with the balloon. In that area, there's another inexplicable spike generator placed on a wall.
  • To the right of the area with the balloon, the bubble generators strike back!
  • The area with the barrel you ride to cross the water does not have the barrel. Above it, there's even more spike generators.
  • In the area where you would enter the Parasitic Worm boss, the level ends.

Chapter 4: Rock Bottom#

  • Spike balls don't harm the player.

Road to Rock Bottom#

  • Many background decorations are not present.
  • Most platforms don't have collision.
  • There are less spikes around platforms, making the level layout much more confusing.

Lonely Souls#

  • There is no jellyfish launcher at the start.
  • Almost immediately after the level starts, there's a wall you can't get past. A clam was added there in the final.
  • In place of log rafts are some metal platforms, which are used in the final in Snail Race.
  • You don't move along with the metal platforms if they are on top of spikes.
  • Some log rafts are not present.
  • Spike hazards are not present.
  • There are no floating platforms.
  • There are no barrels.

The Graveyard#

  • This level does not exist.

Last Stop#

  • The sky is missing and shows screen artifacts, but the level is playable.
  • The balloon at the beginning is not present.
  • The cave background was recolored.
  • There are no falling spikes.
  • Turns out we lied when we said there weren't going to be any more bubble generators in place of bubble platforms or areas where you would use the bubble wand.
  • There are several health pickups throughout the level that were all removed.
  • The Flying Dutchman boss is not present, but his boss arena is.
  • There even happens to be a health pickup and a 1-up at the end of the level.

Chapter 5: Industrial#

Jelly Fields (industrial)#

  • The background lacks the flower clouds.
  • The background details are just a darker version of the normal Jelly Fields. In the final, it's much more clear that it's been polluted.
  • The oil on the ground was originally green instead of blue.
  • An extra clam was added at the beginning.
  • The first Man Ray enemy is missing.
  • Spiders are not present.
  • Most of the hazards are not present.
  • There's a lack of polish throughout.
  • There are some spike generators to be found.
  • Later in the level, there's a deleted enemy, that being the shark from the episode MuscleBob BuffPants. He was redesigned into the Man Ray enemy.

Man Ray's Lair#

  • This level does not exist.

Oil Rig#

  • The level only consists of a few small areas that appear to be for visual testing, without any actual level design.

Canning Factory#

  • This level does not exist.

Chapter 6: Six Clams Adventure Land#

Snail Race#

  • The sky is not present.
  • The wood design was changed.
  • Gary himself is not present, and neither are any of the objects that you must use or remove to let Gary get to his food, making the level a simple parkour challenge.
  • The jellyfish launcher is placed after the first platform rather than at the beginning. Right next to it, there's also a coral blower for seemingly no reason.
  • You can't actually go inside the fun house, so you have to use noclip to get there.
  • The conveyor platforms don't move you at all.

Big Wheel#

  • This level does not exist.

Roller Coaster#

  • The level uses the Big Wheel music.
  • A wall is present at the start which was removed in the final.
  • The rollercoaster itself immediately starts running off without you, as it was apparently originally just a moving piece of geometry rather than an object you are inside and can control.
  • A bunch of golden spatulas hanging on balloons are present. In the final, they were replaced by the golden flowers.
  • Some walls were replaced by death pits to make the level more of a challenge.
  • There were originally four walls before the second death pit rather than two. The area after that contains six walls instead of three.
  • The level ends where the third death pit is in the final.

Ghost Train#

  • The level uses the Big Wheel music.
  • The sky was originally dark purple instead of dark blue.
  • There was an entire background element, consisting of a brick wall with some openings and ghost fish inside them, that got cut.
  • The foreground elements do not fill the screen.
  • There are no hazards except for death pits.
  • After where the first saw is in the final, there was originally a floating platform.

Tunnel of Love#

  • The background was recolored.
  • The background elements were originally darker.
  • The boat you ride on is not present.
  • There are a few golden spatulas, which were either removed or replaced by golden flowers.
  • There are no hazards, unintentionally making the level more like a realistic tunnel of love.
  • Attempting to skip past the level breaks the game, sending you to "Chapter 255 Level 0" with a broken loading screen as it freezes altogether.
