General Differences#

Title Screen#

Trial Version for E3

Final

Despite this being a demo, the title screen is completely different compared to the final.

  • The background is brighter.
  • Some of the elements like the game's logo and the "PressStartButton" prompt were moved around.
  • There's an animated "Trial Version for E3" logo.
  • Sonic's render is included on the title screen, who is absent in the final. His render (albeit updated) would later be included in the DX port.

To load into the Main Menu, change 8C81F9E4 or 8C81F9F8 to 7.

Trial Version for E3

Final

  • The Main Menu's background is just a faded version of the title screen, rather than a version that has both the "PressStartButton" prompt and the copyright text removed.
  • Chossing the "Internet" option will now cause the game to crash, as all of the internet content was deleted from this build.

Trial Version for E3

Final

  • Just like in the Japanese version, the Emblem Results menu (which is present in Limited Edition) hasn't been added yet, with the Trial menu still having only 2 options as opposed to 3.

Trial Mode#

  • The character select menu has the "Instruction" option from the Adventure mode's menu.

Trial Version for E3

Final

  • The stage select menu is very different from how it appears in the final. Instead of a scoreboard, a screenshot of the stage is shown along with a difficulty rating denoted from 1-3 stars. The Sub Games are also part of this menu, but they don't have a difficulty rating.

Gameplay#

SonicAdventureTrialVersionforE3_ComingSoonScreen.png

  • Beating any stages, losing all lives or quitting from the pause menu, the COMING SOON!!! screen will appear before sending you back to the title screen.
  • Likely for demo purposes, staying completely idle for 2 minutes will reset and take you back to the title screen.
  • All characters start off with every upgrade by default.

Mission Cards#

While most of the mission cards have been finalized by this point in development, some of them are different from the final. Namely, all of Knuckles cards and Amy's card for the C mission. It should be noted that all of Knuckles' cards have both sides of the graphics cut off in the demo.

Notes

"Collect three of the Emeralds" was changed to "Find the three Emeralds" in the final version.

"Collect three of the Emeralds" was changed to "Find the Emeralds", "the hint orb!" was changed to "any hintballs." and the "hintballs" text was no longer highlighted in red in the final.

"Collect the Emerald" was changed to "Find the Emeralds" in the final version.

"Zero" is capitalized as "ZERO" in the demo, and "balloon" is misspelled as "ballon". While the latter was fixed in the final, the misspelling does still appear on the A and B mission cards in the final.

Cutscene Differences#

This page or section needs more videos.
There's a whole lotta words or pictures here, but not enough videos. Please fix this.
Specifically: Show Adventure Mode in action, so we can get an accurate look of what's different in this demo compared to the final.

To do:

  • Everything.
  • Adventure mode can be played in this version using the TGS menus (8C81F9F8 to 0), so a more accurate look at the story mode is possible.

The English localization is unfinished, so some cutscenes either still use Japanese voice clips or none at all.

Voice Clip Differences#

Some of the voice clips heard in this version are different from the ones heard in the final:

Notes

It's looking good so far!

Hah-hah! So far so good!

Tails

Sonic and Tails' lines during the Torando 2's transformation cutscene in Sky Deck. While these were replaced in the final, they can still be found unused in the files.

Here it comes again!

Hope you know what you're doing.

Sonic

Don't worry, I'm ready!

You bet, watch this!

Tails

Tails: You bet, watch this!
Tails: Transforming now!
Sonic: Whoaah!''
Tails:
Let's do it!

Sonic & Tails

The cutscene audio heard in Sky Chase Act 2 is slightly different in the demo, Tails says "You bet, watch this!" which doesn't occur in the final and his "Transforming now!" line occurs slightly later than it does in the final.

Amy

Sonic, help me!

A version of Amy's last line during the cutscene where the Egg Carrier captures her in Sonic's story that lacks the reverb effect that's heard in the final. Unused, as all of Amy's lines during that cutscene are in Japanese.

This must be the way to the Sky Deck.

So, this must be the Sky Deck, huh?

Tails

An alternate version of Tails' line during the cutscene before Sky Deck, being notably the same line that Sonic says in his version of the cutscene.

Testing... hello?

Ahem. Testing 1, 2, 3.

Eggman

Eggman's lines during the cutscene where he instructs Gamma to get the Jet Booster in Gamma's story. Not only are the lines unfiltered in this version, but they were completely redone in the final.

Gamma, prepare for emergency battle procedures!

Gamma! Get ready for battle instructions!

Go to the ammunition room and get the Jet Booster.

Get the Jet Booster from the ammunition room and get up to the deck. The ammunition room is unlocked.

Knuckles' Story#

Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.

His story with the early voice is mostly complete (but still unfinished), which can be seen in the final game in action here. It's possible to see the demo itself in action via the use of TGS menus (8C81F9F8 to 0).

Unused Audio#

Found in the voice archive are voice clips of all of the playable characters saying... strange baby noises. These voice clips originally existed in the Japanese version, and these were the only ones that actually got an English equivalent. While Gamma’s equivalent voice clips were kept in the final’s voice archive (despite still being unused), the other characters were not.

Old Sand Hill Object Layout#

SonicAdventurePrerelease_SandHillObjects.png

Watch on YouTube

While in this version of the game it can only be played as Tails, Sonic's object layout for Sand Hill (SETSBOARD00S.BIN) is, bizarrely, a version that predates the original Japanese release. No other file in the game is from a pre-final build.

Compared to the final version, many objects are missing and the ones that are present are incorrect due to the IDs in the SET file being different to the stage's object list, resulting in objects that shouldn't be in the level appearing such as swinging spike balls and springs. It lacks many of the surrounding ruins and point gates that appear normally.

Early press release screenshots of the stage (shown left) had a similar layout to the one in this file, showing that many of the objects the file expected, such as static versions of the animated snake segments, were no longer in the final game. However, they can be found in the AutoDemo. A fixed version of the file can be seen in this video.

Reaching the end will not trigger the stage, but it can still be beaten if one of the misplaced froggy objects is touched. According to when the file is fixed and played in the AutoDemo, it has a capsule buried in the floor at the end, high enough for the player to reach on the board by jumping.
