When controlling a Spartan, many weapons are available to the player, and can be cycled through with the Q and E keys. The weapon system as a whole bears a much closer resemblance to Bungie's prior Marathon series, with the final's two-weapon limit having yet to be implemented, and many weapons featuring secondary fire modes on Right Click. Many weapons are also directly named after their Marathon counterparts.
Weapons#
MA-5 ICW/30mm CGL (Assault Rifle)#
Primary fire is similar to the final game, but secondary fire shoots grenades much like in Marathon, with a magazine size of 6. Unlike in Marathon, they bounce along the ground before exploding.
0x877A 18F8 (Plasma Rifle)#
The Plasma Rifle’s HUD name is a reference to the Marathon series, where alien weapons use corrupted text strings as titles. By default, the Plasma Rifle model’s LODs are configured incorrectly, so it appears as a low-detail flat sprite. The overheat mechanic is not yet present, and it does not deal any damage.
SWS99C-S2 (Sniper Rifle)#
12.7mm MP-99 para (SMG)#
This gun was cut from the final, but resembles the M7 SMG that would be featured in Halo 2. Primary fire is automatic, secondary fire is a three-round burst.
WSTE-M90 sacs (Shotgun)#
Fires automatically when the trigger is held, but otherwise functions very similar to the final Shotgun, using the same sound effect. Holds 5 rounds and has no secondary fire.
SPNKR M41 SSM (Rocket Launcher)#
50 Magnum Mega Class M4a (Pistol)#
ASW Needler (Chaingun)#
Hey... where are my needles?? A completely different weapon from the final's weapon of the same name, instead being a high-capacity chaingun, similar to Halo 3's AIE-486H machine gun. Much like those, it starts firing slow but ramps up over a few seconds.
SPNKR 108 SAM (Missile Launcher)#
Pattern-2 Composite Sword#
While cut from the final game, the Machete lived on in the difficulty icons in various games throughout the series.
TOZT-24 Defoliant Projector (Flamethrower)#
Another weapon was cut from the final, but was left over in its files, and later made usable in the Windows release. In this build, it's named after the TOZT-7 from Marathon.
Flag#
When placed in the editor, the flag can be picked up with Z. While it had a Bungie logo when presented at MacWorld, in this build the flag shows a Halo logo.
Unlike the final game, the flag cannot be dropped once picked up.
Excavator#
A cut Covenant weapon, which would eventually return in Halo 3 as the Mauler.
The diffuse texture remained in the files of the final game.
