Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a 2D platformer sequel more akin to Rare's Donkey Kong Country games than a Banjo-Kazooie style collectathon. Yooka and Laylee have to stop Capital B who has built a new lair that he deems impossible due to its difficulty. It is the second game in the Yooka-Laylee franchise, and features many returning characters from the original game. This entry scored more favourable reviews relative to the indie duo's first adventure.

The Impossible Lair#

Technically, all four acts of Impossible Lair are four different levels on four different maps. But all of the levels have a door sprite above-left outside the boss room and Capital B sprite above outside the boss room. This door is not able to be entered and is just a sprite.

Chapter 1: Capital Causeway#

Due to different routes on Normal and Chaos levels both variation of this level have small unused areas closer to the end of the levels. A vine used in Chaos difficulty can be found under Checkmate in the penultimate section of the Normal level, without anything around it. A room which the duo enters in Normal level is unavailable and looks "abandoned" in the Chaos version of the level.

Chapter 2: Factory Fright#

Due to different routes on both variation of this level there are unused areas in Normal level that used in Flooded variation, and vice versa. In the Normal level, an empty nook under section with a T.W.I.T. Coin #1 blocked by a Q-box. In the Flooded level, an empty nook above section with a T.W.I.T. Coin #2 blocked by a sluice door.

Normal (under section with T.W.I.T. Coin #1)

Flooded (above section with T.W.I.T. Coin #2)

Other unused areas in the Flooded level include:
- A Black tunnel under waterfall with circular saws above the Capital B statue, the path passed through here in the Normal level. - An Empty flooded nook at the center of the map behind the sluice door where was hidden room with a circular saw and T.W.I.T. Coin #2 in the Normal level. - Another Empty flooded nook at the bottom of the map behind the sluice door where was the final section of Normal level is.

Unused areas in Flooded level

Each level has its treasure rooms with its own doors, but all doors are on both maps. Two doors are available, the other two doors are blocked by Q-boxes or are out of reach. However, the duo can go through any door if the doors are placed them "manually". In the Normal level, the first door that is located behind the wall to the right of start point, moving the duo to a distant empty area under second treasure room with the T.W.I.T. Coin #4 and thus causing the duo to fall endlessly. A Second door that is located on nook with 4 quills to the right and behind Q-boxes moving the dut to another empty area and the duo will fall onto the map wall.

On the Flooded level there is a door hidden behind the leaves after waterfall with circular saws. It's a proper door (not just a sprite) but the duo can't enter it. Another unused set of doors are above the treasure rooms.

Chapter 3: Wild Web Woods#

Due to different routes on both variation of this level there are unused areas in the Normal level that used in Wilder variation, and vice versa. An empty tunnel under the section with spikes branches and ropes, that used as the main route in the Wilder level, was found in Normal level. The spike-branches was not removed from the Wilder level and are present on this verison without platforms, ropes, enemies and other items. If the player places the duo here (set X/Y coordinates by using cheats, for example), the duo will getting hit after colliding with spikes as usual. There is also another empty sections at the ends of both levels; empty section without anything in Normal the map (unused last part for the Wilder level route) and empty section with lonely spikes in the Wilder map (unused last part for the Normal level route).

Chapter 4: Frantic Fountains#

Unused manhole found covers in Frozen variation in midair in the underground area below little house.

Chapter 5: Gasping Glade#

Despite the fact that both levels are different levels with fully different structures (not modification), there was one unused area found in the Normal level. Three unattainable quills are in the air between the secret exit and Capital B statue.

Chapter 6: Sawblade Evade#

Due to separated waythroughs there are a lot of interesting and unused paths on both levels. It includes unused full sections in the houses or basements, unused nooks and mechanisms, unused doors with movement to corrupted areas or without (just door sprites), and it looks like this chapter has the most unused content out of any other chapter.

To do:

  • This section needs adjusting text wise.

The Normal level starts outside the house and the player should get a key from a crate, unlock a door with a chain and enter it. There is no way go to up to another door, but if we put the duo it there somehow you can't to enter it: this door will be blocked by a grate when you trying to enter it. It Stuck level this door using for main walkthrough instead locked door with a chain (described above) that a just sprite of door with honey.

Due to separation between routes there is an unused house to the left of the start in the Normal level that used in Stuck level as the main route. It's an empty unlit area without anything inside, with partially broken collision and empty holes for the door locations on the Stuck level. There is a one-way door but in this section and it's impossible to enter due to broken collision. Two basement sections are unused in the Stuck level. It's empty unlit areas with normal collision located between the start section and the first long inside section on the map. Despite this, there are available doors and a key that can be grabbed by the player and used to unlock the door. Here it is possible to pass through the doors between the sections and enter the locked door with the ke that will moving the duo to the door besides Checkmate in next normal level section.

To do:

  • This section needs adjusting text wise.

In a normal game mode the player enters to this section through the upper door in the Stuck level and through bottom door in the Normal level and comes out through different doors. If the duo are placed next to upper door and enter it in Normal level, the duo moving to the previously described door in unused house section and will be endless falling due to broken collision map in this area. If put the duo to left outcome door and try to enter in (in Normal level), nothing will happen bacuse it's a door sprite but no door.

If it looks like a door, it doesn't mean that it's a door

If put the duo to right outcome door in Stuck level and enter it, the duo moving to next section like in a Normal level without any problem.

Stuck level has an another unused section witch include T.W.I.T. Coin #3 and Purple quill in Normal level. There is no way to get here but there is available door to go away. If the duo enter it, the duo moving to next section like in a Normal level without any problem and come out of the door that blocked by honey.

Chapter 9: Urban Uprise#

This chapter has separate routes in one house too. There are three unused areas in the Normal level that are used in Updraft level: - To the left of in-house section:

- In the upper right part of the level

- In the upper part of the level for a Capital B statue in Updraft level

The Updraft level has three unused areas too: - Empty unlighting house without anything to the left of start point:

- Small in-houses areas with doors in Normal level partially removed from Updraft level:

It's possible to enter here by setting the X/Y coordinates and placing the duo next to tje unused door in the first section. It's funny that next to the door moving the duo into the wall to the left of section T.W.I.T. coin #1 and it's possible to get out of there without cheats and hacks.
