Translation Errors

This is a sub-page of Yo-kai Watch 3.

To do:

  • Add info from here, and the Japanese version for comparison purposes.
    • Japanese graphics on Z Medals and on Spanish-language version of Cluvian Continent map.
    • Amekome Club record leftover in the Music App graphic in localized versions.
    • Japanese NyaKB/Next HarMEOWny graphic left on NPCs' happi in localized versions, can be seen in Sparkopolis Station.

Yo-kai Watch 3 had an even more complicated localization. While the very few amount of localizers went through to translate and localize as much as possible for a game this expansive, there more than just a few errors lurking about.

Lost/Changed in Translation#

BBQan English#

Notoriously, a plot point at the beginning of the game involves Nate and his parents having to learn the BBQan dialect, composed of stereotypical Deep South phrasing. In the Japanese version, this was originally having to learn English instead. The latter would be carried onto other European translations, due to English serving as a foreign language.

Interestingly, the font used for the English text in the Japanese version would be used for the localized versions.

555 Symbolism#

The main antagonist of the game, The Ghoulfather has references to it's Japanese name and wordplay. In Japanese, the Yo-kai is named Gogogo Godfather (ゴゴゴ・ゴッドファーザー), derived from The Godfather (ゴッドファーザー) and the onotempediaic sound gogogo (ゴゴゴ), interpreted as a "menacing atmosphere", as well as being his catchphrase, though localized as "bada-bing" in English and similar European languages.

Naturally, that numerical reference applies to his origin story and location, where he was imprisoned for 555 years, and resides at the 555th Floor of the Bada-Bing Tower. The number 5 in Japanese is go (五), which is stretched to gogogo (五五五), than "five-hundred and fifty five" In English to fit with the pun. The wordplay would not carry over to other translations, being directly translated from English instead.

Yo-kai Names#

A handful of Yo-kai introduced in this game have meanings that go lost in translation for various reasons.

  • Yo-kai Fundango's design is based off Lucky Ikeda, someone who does the dance choreography routines of the Yo-kai Watch opening and ending themes. The localized name, as well as it's pre-evolution Glumdango goes lost in translation. The names in Japanese are Happii-san (ハッピィさん) and Unlucky-san (アンラッキィさん) respectively, with the latter being a direct reference to the design inspiration.
  • The evolution for Who-Me, is called Too-Much-To-Take (2-Much-2-Take ingame), in the English localization. This is due to their pre-evolution originally being called "To-What-To-Who" in Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble, which doesn't quite line up with it's name in the final.
    • In Japanese, the Yo-kai is called Jigoku-Mimizoku (じごくミミズク), derived from jigokumimi (地獄耳), for "Hell ears" and mimizuku (木菟), for "sharp-horned owl".
  • DON-CHAN's name is strangely in capitals compared to Yo-kai Watch 2, where it was all lowercase. This isn't the case for the French and Italian languages.

  • When you talk to Mermaidyn in the Yo-kai World without an invitation she will tell you to link to other players with other versions of the game to get one. The invitation is obtained in the international versions by talking to Mister E due to other versions not getting localized.
  • Page 14 of the electronic manual is in Italian.
