Way of the Warrior

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

Way of the Warrior is a fighting game that has a very interesting development history but nonetheless sold well (even managing to outsell Samurai Shodown) despite reviews being mixed. It became sort of a cult classic on the 3DO and saved Naughty Dog from going bankrupt, which may explain why the company has included references to Way of the Warrior in later titles.

Unused Sounds#

Sounds for what seems to be a gate opening and closing, possibly intended for the Cave stage.

Unused sound that could've maybe been used for the bonus sounds.

Major Gaines has an unused voiceline for his weebee magic. Since he can't make himself tiny, the voiceline goes unused.

Book Keeper has unused voicelines for the unused cave map selection and two that seems to be related for the possession matches for when you have to finish off the possessed fighters.

Unused Graphics#

2 Player Modem Mode#

An unused graphic for an online multiplayer mode. Likely scrapped since the 3DO's multiplayer add-on never got released.

Arcade Settings#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Check if it's possible to access this setting.

Unused panel for a setting that has coins per play and a gore setting that's only in the European version.

Demo Leftovers#

Demo graphics from the 3DO Interactive Sampler CD #1 still remain in the game's files.

Referee#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Check if it's possible to load this NPC in the stages.

An unused monk referee NPC that would've acted like the one from Samurai Shodown. An earlier version of this character was present in prerelease screenshots.

Placeholder Icon#

The CA10 and CA11 folders include a placeholder icon for the stages.

Graveyard#

CA0 folder contains early graphics for Kull's grave, stage icon, and ground.

Throne#

CA4 folder contains an unused graphic that is meant to be used in the background of the stage.

Arena#

CA9 folder contains an unused graphic of a monk that is meant to be used in the background of the stage. This was shown in some prerelease screenshots of the game.

The Garden#

CA10 folder contains unused graphics of some parts of the stage that don't seem to fit for the Taj Mahal stage at all. It seems like originally the stage was actually meant to be a garden stage before being changed to Taj Mahal.

Unused Hi-Scores#

High Abbot and Kull have their own Hi-Score graphics that are unused. The odd thing about it is they don't have the text saying "Hi-Score", triple yin yang, and their character on the bottom-left. Further, not only does High Abbot not have his name here, but it uses an early versus graphic.

Unused Character Sprites#

Konotori#

Chunk1 contains an unused graphic of Konotori getting his balance back. For some reason Konotori reuses one of his graphics from one of his fan attacks in the final.

In-Game

Unused

Chunk3 contains unused graphics of Konotori's first victory animation.

Nikki Chan#

Chunk1 contains an unused graphic of what seems to be Nikki Chan using her hair in her flipping motion. It might've been for a cut flip move that relates using her hair.

Major Gaines#

Chunk0 contains two unused kicking sprites. These would've been used for his regular kicks.

Chunk4 contains a full set of unused graphics that seem to be an unused fatality of Major Gaines picking up someone and pulling a pin of a grenade with his mouth and shoving it in the opponent's mouth.

Fox#

Chunk0 contains an unused frame for his knee grab move.

Crimson Glory#

Chunk1 contains two unused frames of Crimson Glory's Long Kick attack.

Chunk4 contains unused graphics of what seems to be a backbreaker move. This was later replaced with a similar backbreaker move that Major Gaines. Fox also would later have this kind of backbreaker move for himself.

Chunk10 contains four unused frames of Crimson Glory's first victory animation.

Duplicate Sprites#

High Abbot and Gulab Jamun both have an unused chunk called Chunk4 that seems to be wrong palette sprites of Dragon's Power Kick fatality. It's unknown why it's here; it could've been used as a placeholder fatality for them. Kull has an unused chunk called Chunk3 which contains wrong palette sprites of High Abbot's introduction.

Hidden Cool Rematches#

To get the cool images go to versus mode and achieve them by playing these specific characters.

Dragon#

Win the second round without taking any damage and do not use Left Shift, Right Shift, B, sweep-forward, or sweep-backward. Dragon will also say his special message about the losers of the internet.

Nobunaga#

Win the second round using only the A and C buttons.

Shaky Jake#

Hit your opponent with three fireballs during the second round.

Fox#

Hit your opponent with the voodoo dizzy dust 10 times, but do not use voodoo dizzy dust until the opponent recovers during the second round.

Major Gaines#

You must let eight grenades explode on the ground during the second round. This means that the fuse on the grenades must expire on their own, and grenades that hit your opponent do not count.

Crimson Glory#

Win the second round without using the A, C, Right Shift, or Left Shift. This means that you must use only Crimson's block attacks to win.

Name Entry Codes#

Way of the Warrior contains some hidden codes that can be activated by putting in the "Names" section.

Stages#

Psychedelic World#

Type "PARANOID" followed by "5/5/75" and you'll be fighting in a trippy psychedelic arena...

Turbo World#

Type "SPEED" followed by "8/8/80" and you'll be in this weird-looking sewer arena. The game's FPS will also be sped up, which truly makes it an actual turbo fight.

The Alley#

Type "TUGAWAR" followed by "4/16/64" and you'll be in the alley with a brick wall that has the Naughty Dog logo on it. This arena is unique since there is no timer and both you and your opponent will have both health bar linked together which you must hurt each other to move the line and get it to their side; once it gets to their side they die.

Taj Mahal/The Garden#

Type "TAJ MAHAL" followed by "1/1/01" and you'll be at the beautiful Taj Mahal stage where you fight the possessed characters and Gulab Jamun.

Characters#

To access the characters go to versus mode then go to the bottom right where Crimson Glory is at then go right and you'll be at the extra characters.

High Abbot#

Type "J RUBIN" followed by "1/6/70" and you'll be able to play as High Abbot.

Kull#

Type "A GAVIN" followed by "6/11/70" and you'll be able to play as Kull.

Black Dragon#

Type "WYVERN" followed by "3/9/27" and you'll be able to play as Black Dragon.

Major Trouble#

Type "BAD BODY" followed by "2/4/8" and you'll be able to play as Major Trouble.

Voodoo#

Type "EVIL" followed by "6/6/66" and you'll be able to play as Voodoo.

Gulab Jamun#

Type "GULAB" then followed by "2/29/00" and you'll be able to play as Gulab.

Extradis#

Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Document everything that the debug mode has.

Type "EXTRADIS" followed by "9/9/09", then go to tournament or versus mode. Hold Down + Right + A + B + C + Start on the second controller and debug mode will activate.

Nikki Chan's Peace Symbol#

Wiggle the pad and press buttons rapidly during Nikki's "drop to the ground" win sequence and she will show a peace sign.

Nobunaga's Cool Dance#

In the second round which Nobunaga wins (the second victory round) he must charge up the magic star 10 times. To charge his star, press A rapidly while throwing the normal slow star. The magic star glows.

Magic Antenna#

A secret magic antenna can be summoned on the Roof stage by having 100 skull points then taunt and press A and C very fast while taunting. Starting to press A and C fast before beginning the taunt helps. If the magic is done skulls will fly out of the character and the antenna will appear.

Old Funny Konotori Sounds#

Konotori has two moves which have strange optional sounds. These moves are the Swan Dive (Down and R in the air) and the Blade Roll (Down, Down-back, Back, and R). To get the strange sounds you must press both A and C very fast while doing the moves. This is easier if you rapidly hit A and C before performing the move.

Space War#

Space War is activated by pressing a complex series of buttons at the character selection screen in Tournament or Versus. Two players should each take a joystick go to the character selection screen in two player (versus) mode. The right player (Player 2) should pick a character and hold DownRight, A, B, C, and START. While the right player (Player 2) is holding these buttons down have the left player (Player 1) hold UpLeft, Left Shift, and Right Shift.

Oddities#

Dragon and Crimson Glory have unique names in the code. That being CHAR_BRUCE which is supposed to be based off of Bruce Lee, and CHAR_CAROL which is Carole May the actor who played Crimson Glory.

Fox's sprites for being slammed along sliced weren’t finished being detailed like all the others.

Konotori's hi-score screen has the old logo design that was used in earlier builds of the game.
