The King of Fighters XIII graces the Windows platform, allowing more people to bask in the glory of rotoscoped sprites that almost drove SNK Playmore into its second bankruptcy.

Test Version Leftovers#

The game still contains four files that are leftovers from the game's testing phase. These were probably used during the original arcade location test. All have the following text on them:

今回のバージョンはここまでとなります。
現在スタッフ一丸となって制作に取り組んで
おりますので、もうしばらくお待ちください。

Which translates to:

And that is the end of this edition. The development team is currently hard at work with the next entry, please look forward to it.

ed_ff.wmv is stored in the video folder. It's a short segment from the cutscene that plays before you fight the boss version of Saiki.

Unused Text#

To do:

  • Text in question was sighted in Version 1.4 (which this user was playing as of this edit). Check previous versions per possible revisional differences.
  • Add Saiki and Evil Ash win quotes in fights to each other, and for themselves.

Because the three DLC characters cannot be fought in Arcade mode (except for Mobile releases in the case of EX Kyo and EX Iori), and the two bosses cannot be used in any mode (outside of a mod), the dialogues between the characters within each set go unused.

DLC#

EX Kyo, EX Kyo

Kyo: I've seen so much crazy stuff in my life, this kind of thing doesn't even surprise me anymore. I've gotten used to fighting copies of myself by now! Come to think of it, when you're as popular as I am, it only makes sense that people would try to impersonate you.

Kyo: I have to say, you've really done your homework! You sound exactly like me. But can you copy my flames as well, I wonder... You'd better try your best if you don't want to end up in the hospital, Mr.Fake!

EX Kyo, EX Iori

Iori: This will be the end of it all, Kyo... The end of my anger and the end of your life!

Kyo: Sorry to interrupt your dramatic monologue, Yagami, but I'd appreciate it if you would've make my schedule for me like that. I've got a date with Yuki planned for next week, and nobody's gonna get in the way of that!

EX Kyo, Mr. Karate

Kyo: This guy... He might be trying to suppress it, but I can sense a tremendous aura of bloodlust... It's like my dad that one time... Maybe even worse?

Mr. Karate: So you can feel it, can you? Yet you still challenge me!?

Kyo: Yeah, I'm afraid my dad taught me to never run away at the last moment!

EX Iori, EX Iori

Iori: I don't care who I'm up against. If you stand in my way, I won't show any mercy.

Iori: Naturally... This includes shadows of myself as well.

EX Iori, Mr. Karate

Iori: I've never seen your face among those Kyokugen idiots before... Interesting.

Mr. Karate: I'm nothing like the others. You'll be singing a different tune after I'm done with you.

Iori: Sorry bub! I only know one tune, and that's my victory fanfare!

Mr. Karate, Mr. Karate

Mr. Karate: What kind of martial artist would be unable to defeat himself? This is exactly the kind of trial I've been looking for!

Mr. Karate: I admire your spirit! I will best even my own skills, and reach the loftiest heights in the martial arts!

Bosses#

Saiki, Saiki

Saiki: Wait, what is the meaning of this!?

Saiki: That's what I get for messing around with time, I suppose. But this has its uses, right?

Saiki: Yes. And now it's time "you" gave that power to "me"!

Saiki, Evil Ash

Saiki: Your appearance... You're the "me" that failed, aren't you? How pathetic.

Ash: Heheh... it doesn't matter now. This only means that I am the stronger one!

Evil Ash, Evil Ash

Ash: Are you my past or my future? I know you're not my present, at least.

Ash: What does it matter? The winner will absorb the loser in any case.

Ash: And I will become stronger! Strong enough to open the gate by myself some day!

Version Differences#

During the story intermissions, whenever a character speaks their name is displayed above the text in the PC and console versions. In the original arcade version, no name appears, which makes it difficult to know who's talking specifically.
